When you move the site to Drupal, seriously consider a faster web server than apache such as lighttpd or LiteSpeed Web Server.

I wouldn't trust someone looking to sell me their own software, to tune the competing products correctly.

I have a hard time believing that Apache, and not perl or PHP parsing, is the bottleneck for heavy dynamic sites.

The site is responding.. with errors.

Which Apache is gladly serving up.

Apache is having trouble accessing something it needs to properly serve the pages.  Hence the errors.

Most likely this is an issue with the database backend rather then Apache.

I've never used lightspeed, but I think their benchmarks are fair and have not been dispute from what I can tell, and the do have a fully functional free version.
