RedState has a real need for your help
Imagine the power of a fully armed and operational RedState
By Erick Posted in Miscellanea — Comments (180) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »
When we started RedState in May of 2004, we used a website program called Scoop — the same program a lot of similar sites on the left used. But, as the number of visitors to our site grew, Scoop kept crashing on us.
If we’d been a liberal website, we would have been able to fix the problem quickly and relatively cheaply. The online left loves Scoop. Unfortunately, there weren’t really any conservative Scoop developers out there to help us. We kept crashing and were out of money. We had to close down or take drastic action.
Well, we didn’t close down. We ditched Scoop and moved to the best alternative at the time, a program called Drupal. But, in accomplishing the switch, budget constraints forced us to sacrifice some popular site features in order to alleviate the strain on our overused servers.
Needless to say, we always regarded those “downgrades” as temporary, and we hoped to restore the eliminated features – and to add new and even better ones – as soon as we could afford to.
Unfortunately, we still can’t afford to. But we’re convinced that America can afford even less to have us operating at anything less than our absolute peak potential during the coming presidential election season.
So we’ve decided to move ahead with our upgrades without delay, and despite not having the cash on hand – hoping and praying that RedState.com readers like you will help us make up the shortfall with a generous donation.
Please read on for a preview and more begging . . .
Here, specifically, is what we’re planning to accomplish with your generous financial support …
In February, we will be launching RedState v.3.0 – a complete website overhaul that, instead of relying on third-party providers like Scoop or Dupral, will this time be our own specially-created platform designed to give us all the capabilities, power and independence to serve you, our readers with everything you want and deserve.
Here are just a few of the features that we'll be adding to our website – or bringing back by popular demand:
- ★ improved tools for state and local blogging
- ★ online activism channels
- ★ enhanced social networking
- ★ a conservative job/volunteer board
- ★ special tools for easier posting
- ★ tools for tracking new comments and total comments
- ★ user access to comments
- ★ ability to track recent activity on the site
Upgrades and improvements like these will immeasurably enhance the RedState.com experience for you and other readers – and help to attract new readers and thereby extend our influence during this crucial election season.
But the v.3.0 upgrade will not come cheap. And to make it happen, we need to raise an additional $25,000 over and above what we have available in our budget.
And that’s where loyal readers like you come in. We figure if just 1,000 of our readers respond to this appeal by donating at least $25 each, we can cover the entire shortfall in one fell swoop.
Won’t you please help us out by making a donation today? And please be as generous as you can afford – much as I hope that we’ll get 1000 donations, that may be too hopeful on my part, so your additional generosity will help compensate for those who can’t even afford $25.
And, if at all possible, please make your donation immediately by clicking here. We’re already financially committed to this upgrade, and the bills for it are already coming due.
I’ll be blunt: I hate asking you for money. But I hate even more to imagine what America will be like if someone like Hillary Clinton or Barack Hussein Obama wins the presidency in November. RedState can help prevent that nightmare from coming true – but only if we’re offering the best possible web experience to the widest possible audience.
That’s what RedState 3.0 will enable to us to become. Please help make us the website that you’ve been asking for, that all our readers deserve – and that America so desperately needs.

And, Thank God, I didn't even have to answer the phone! Can't tell you how sick I am of political solicitation calls almost a year before the election, but this is a worthy cause and a respectful solicitation.

I also made an additional donation in honor of BrooksRob, RIP. Lord knows he and I sucked up at LEAST that much bandwidth.
..."but" I want to encourage the fine folks at RS to be more tolerant of other conservatives who vary in their opinions. Don't be so eager to boot people off your site if they differ with you unless they start using bad language. Then that's understandable. More free and open discussion. Thanks.
if someone gets blocked for no apparent reason and then sends an email explaining the fact that they are a longtime contributor and financial supporter, at least have the courtesy to respond to his or her email.

not to air on the board. I've never seen you before, which is odd being that I've been on here over 2 years, so I have no idea your contributions rate, nor do I have any idea your financial support rate, but I think there is an unfair perspective that because you make donations to the site somehow you've bought a share in it and have a say in how it is run. That's not how donations work. That's how shareholding works. Big differences between the two.

and as "Neodanite".
My first username was accidentally blocked when we went from RedState.org to redstate.com (1.0 to 2.0).
My second one was blocked (accidentally, I presume) last month for no apparent reason.
I've gone to the help page and followed its instructions. I've followed up several times to see if anyone there will at least send me a "we're looking into it" response. Nothing.
I can understand this treatment if I were some kind of trouble-maker or a troll. But I'm a diehard conservative who has contributed financially on several occasions in the past.
I know that you are Leon's wife. I've debated issues in the past with you. I'm always professional and courteous.
I even had trusted-user status during that brief period of time when trusted-users were allowed to troll-rate liberal abusers of this site.
I don't understand how the editors can ask for money while ignoring long-time contributors. I will accept whatever decision that's made as long as I get some kind of explanation.
To this day, I haven't even received a courtesy email. It has been over 3 weeks and several follow-up emails since my initial complaint.
Romney Republican
have to say that the one evening that I had an interaction with you was absolutely bizarre. I actually thought you were high on something because you bounced around from diary to diary slamming people and then rarely responding. I remember one person asking what they had ever done to you because your comments were so off-the-wall and aggressive. I am not sure if that is why you were booted, but I can't say that I wasn't pleased to have you gone.

I couldn't log in for a few weeks about a couple of months ago and thought I was blocked. I'm not really sure what it was because it just started working again one day. My suspicion is that something got messed up with the cookies because I use different computers at different times to log on with.
but I could always log in from a different PC, even one on the same subnet. It usually went away in a week or so, and I'd just use my other PC.
Hopefully the new software will fix that.
to stipulate a donation with an "if only you'll do this." If you want people to listen to grievances, that's fine. Don't do it with a "if you don't listen and do what I say you won't get my funds." Either give them or don't. I will venture a guess to say that you have no clue what all goes on behind the scenes at this site nor do you have any idea what utter PILLS people can be.
People really just need to stop pushing the limit here.

For those of us who are poor college students who love this site and really want to give, but aren't necessarily financially able, why not click on 2 or 3 of Redstate's advertisers everytime you log on to the site. I'm not sure what kind of money Redstate gets through ads, but I'm sure every little bit helps.
Red State has been a well of information for me since it was first referred to me by a friend and it'd be great to return the favor.

Look, I've donated to RedState on at least three occasions. It was a significant amount of money each time. But when my username somehow got blocked last month, I received no explanation and no response to my numerous emails. Please respond to at least one of my emails first, then I'll consider donating. My handle was "California Conservative" before I got blocked. At least send me the email address of the person to whom I may take my grievance. Preferably someone who will respond.
Romney Republican
Fair point. Unfortunately, I've dropped the ball in wading through the comment line because it's been infested with porn spam and Ron Paul trolls.
Why were you banned?
I was posting and responding to posts on or about December 24th. The next day, I couldn't log in.
Go to the account for "California Conservative". If there was a real banning, let me know. I think that my account was accidentally blocked. But if I'm wrong, I'd like to know why I was banned.
This is the best site on the internet. If the customer service were a little better, it would be ideal.
Thanks for your concern.

I also have trouble logging in. I simply clear my cookies and viola, I am in.
However, I am assuming you have already tried that.

quit working as well for several months.
I think my problem was that while I was in the middle of typing a post I needed to reference Neil Steven's extremely handy Basic HTML for RedStaters blog. I opened a second Internet Explorer and tried to sign in and find Neil's blog.
I suspect that being signed into RedState twice at the same time somehow freaked out the system and made my username unusable.
I was unable to get the username to work. After about three months I really wanted to post a response on some topic or other and decided to try to login again. That time it worked and has kept working since.
I printed out Neil's blogs on HTML and now have them sitting right beside my computer. I have not tried to log in twice since having the problem, so I assume that was my problem.
I may have inadvertently screwed myself by allowing my computer to remember my password. After I did that (for the first time), I could no longer log in. But that shouldn't matter, should it?
Romney Republican
We have the problem.
You got all hot with Mark Kilmer and wound up calling him an idiot. Not a good idea.
If you behave, we'll let you back in.
And the ban button should be taken away from him. When you start to disagree with him, he labels you "disruptive" and bans people.
I'll never donate to RedState as long as he has the ability to ban people. He is truly one of the worst and most petty, vindictive contributors on this site.

Eric,
Have you looked at upgrading your server farm to be able handle more features with Drupal? Drupal offers so many features, I think it makes a great base for many applications that allow the general public to create
web content.
Drupal also has many developers working to make it better. This is something you lose with a custom application. Mysql replication allows
multiple database servers to answer queries. Web is by definition parallel allowing a cluster of servers to serve requests. Whichever direction you choose, best of luck.
Steve
Steve,
The primary reason we need help is because we tried to stick with Drupal and it was a disaster trying to do what we wanted and stay with Drupal.
Servers were a secondary consideration. We're going with Django.
Thanks for the work on the site - I really enjoy RedState and am looking forward to teh new layout.

=============
Life is not fair, but It's still a Wonderful Life!
What we need in a leader is to tell us not what we want to hear, but what we need to hear.
We considered that but we ran into scalability issues that could not be easily fixed except by adding more servers.
Instead, we're going to go with something in Django.
...please note: if we weren't pissing them off on a regular basis, people from the Other Side wouldn't be coming over here to try to scuttle our fundraising.
Put it another way: I'm not telling you to give us money. I'm just telling you that there are people who are sufficiently worried that you will that they've made the effort to try and stop you.

First off -- let me state I don't know squat about SCOOP or any of the buisiness side of websites like RS so maybe there is some key aspect of this that i am missing.
That said....
I don't mind a straight forward request for money to improve services, but blaming the liberal left for the results of your decisions seems tacky and hypocritcal. Is this not the community that believes in free market solutions? I doubt there is a vast left wing conspiracy to deny you access to SCOOP developers and there is no free speech demagoguery happening here. If the left has more developers available to them, its because they have created the market place that enables this to be so. RS should do the same, or move on.
You have made the latter decision and adopted a different business model that relies on donations. Dont' apologise for that, and especially don't blame others (isn't this what we critize the left for doing) -- just take responsibility and make it work.
-JAC
I was surprised by the email Erick sent out. Blaming the liberals just seemed so, well, high school. I plan to contribute regardless as Redstate is my favorite blog. I just think the email could have been worded a little better.

Can you post an address to which I could send you a check? I'm too scared of the internet to send you money that way.
It is a secure website that validates your checking account and allows you to make secure payments on the Web. The receiver of the payment will never see your banking information. Your paper check, on the other hand, contains your name, your address, your checking account number and if you are really nutty, your phone number and social security number.

Drupal was actually a big reason I started reading RedState on a daily basis--I used to run a Drupal site. I'll be sad to see it go but good luck with the redesign; it's always exciting and scary.
I presumed you were using a CivicSpace release of Drupal, I guess because it was a political creation (heritage from the Dean campaign). Is that correct? Thanks

And while I understand that running this site isn't cheap, some of the remarks puzzle me. E.g.
The bad news: our liberal "friends" - you know, the ones who believe so strongly in free speech and open debate - have done what they can to prevent us from making these improvements, so that our influence will be minimized just as we head into the 2008 presidential primary season.
No, our Blue State buddies haven't succeeded in stopping us from improving our website. But they've made it more difficult and more expensive - which is why I'm coming to you for help.
What exactly has the left done? Run denial of service attacks? Sabotaged your hosting company? Hacked into your servers? Hid code in Scoop and Drupal which made it perform less good if hostname == redstate.com?
Yes, they every now and then sent their users over, leading to disruptive postings, but that probably was more of an administrative hassle than a server performance issue.
What did Kos & co do to stop you from running Scoop or Drupal efficiently? Did they interfere with your ability to run advertisements on redstate.com? (boycotts against companies advertising here or FEC shenanigans?) Did they lobby the authors of the free software you're using to add clauses in the licenses which penalizes right-wing sites? Blackmail?
If we’d been a liberal website, we would have been able to fix the problem quickly and relatively cheaply. The online left loves Scoop. Unfortunately, there weren’t really any conservative Scoop developers out there to help us.
IIRC, Kos hired Rusty, the original Scoop author. They seems to have solved their problems by hiring talent and paying them to fix the code issues (plus adding features) in addition to adding adequate hardware power. I have no idea how much of these fixes were included into subsequent public Scoop releases. Is that your complaint? That these fixes were only made available to left-wing blogs?
Do you have any ideas why there were no conservative Scoop people willing to help you? Aren't there any or are they just not willing to work without pay?
-----
In other words: I fully understand that you need to solicit contributions from the readership here, but I have troubles understanding why you had to blame the evil liberals for this. Running a high-traffic site is expensive enough even without malicious actors in the game.
Sorry for the number of questions, but these came to my mind when I got the email.
That was much my thought that the narrative didn't make any sense. But who cares its been worth considerably more than the 25 bucks.

I'm only speculating here, but it's not that anyone has done anything to redstate.com, it's that redstate.com isn't being maintained as well as the competition. I've posted another comment about that.
Given the known security problems with the out-of-date software the site is running, if someone wanted to sabotage the site they could have done so long ago.
In terms of denial of service, there is the possibility that an article about your call for help will be listed on the main page of the geek news site http://slashdot.org/ Right now it is only listed on a "paid subscribers only" section. If it hits the main page, you will suddenly have hundreds of thousands (okay, I'm guessing that the number) of visits. This, so called "Slashdot Effect" has been known to bring sites down, although there is nothing malicious about it.

"I'm just beginning...The pen's in my hand...Ending unplanned"
Your call for help is beginning to make the rounds of some geek websites, which is where I saw it.
I did a very quick check to see what software you are running and see that RedState.com is using OpenSSH version 3.9p1 (for remote log ins) and Apache httpd 2.0.59 with PHP/4.4.5 (for webserver). These are all woefully out of date and have many known and potentially exploitable security problems. I didn't probe further -- I wanted to stay well and unambiguously within the law -- and I didn't need to probe further to get a sense of the scale and nature of your maintenance problem.
I understand your need to get things taken care of. But in addition to getting the immediate problem fixed, what is more important is that some procedure is put into place to actually install security updates as they come along. You will either have to hire a geek that is kept on retainer to do that (lots of people do), find a volunteer geek who will do that (there aren't that many conservative geeks, but there are plenty of libertarian ones), or have the person who comes in to fix things train someone in your organization to keep things properly updated.
Keeping things up to date with security patches and updates is extremely important. Once you get the current mess sorted out, you must have a plan to not get in it again.
PS: Politically I am one of "the enemy" from your point of view (though I would certainly vote McCain or Guiliani over Edwards in November if that is what it came down to) so other than this advice, I will not volunteer to help. Also, I've never been involved in managing community websites before, so I can't honestly offer my services for hire.
My recommendation is that you find a geek supporter who would like to add something like this to his resume, but recognize that young supporters like that are flighty. So have someone who will stay in the organization work with the geek, and in particular make sure that this person gets suitably trained by the geek to get an overall sense of how things work and how to maintain things. In that training process, write everything down. Develop a redstate.com maintenance manual.
I hope that even though I am a political opponent you will take my advice seriously. When I see network security problems, I like to see them fixed. While I don't wish you well in your principal goals, I do believe in the market place of ideas and you shouldn't be eliminated from the marketplace for mere technical reasons.
Thanks Jeff. This is one area where we are rapidly working to fix things. We'll be moving to a new server when we relaunch and we've made sure everything will be up to date. Likewise, we've put a plan in place to make sure we stay up to date.
I hate characterizing myself that way, because we're all trying to get what's best for the country, aren't we?
In any case, I just wanted to ask if you're really sure you want to do this? It seems to me that you should have had it done before Iowa, not starting afterwards. This way, you're just begging either for the new platform not to be completed in time, or for it to break down as the numbers ramp up toward the election.
25 bucks....hope it helps. Keep us posted on your needs. I am sure we can find some more loot.....My neighbors last name is Hsu.
