*Mister* Delahunt responds.
Calling it an "apology" insults everyone's intelligence.

Like Ed Morrissey, we were forwarded a clip of William Delahunt's inarticulate, artless - in every sense of the term - and almost semantic-free... "response" is the best word, I suppose. "Apology" implies an acceptance of wrong-doing. At any rate, listen for yourself:

Ed's covered a good deal of what I would have, but I just want to clarify something. When Erick said:
If you do not call your Congressman today and demand the House of Representatives, at the very *least*, censure Congressman Delahunt, well damn us all. We have no right to carry on our fight.
...Erick wasn't trying to suggest that our right to speak would be taken away from us if we didn't protest; he was suggesting that there are limits to how much externally-directed hate a man or woman can shrug off, and still keep his or her self-respect. In other words, there is a line - and Delahunt blasted right across it.
I had originally posted two paragraphs of what might have been somewhat self-defeating ranting here, so let me erase it all and get straight to the point: if you do not understand why we are justifiably infuriated at not just what Delahunt did, but where and why he did it, then you are part of the problem - and you do not actually understand us at all.

...Delahunt (with a cc to my representative, John Campbell), which closed with a question:
"What will you do to make this right? I suspect it will be the same thing you have done to secure the safety and well being of our nation . . . nothing."
Just as I suspected, *Mister* Delahunt lacks the stones to even accept responsibility for his own inadequacies. A shining example of the Libocratic party.

I just can't get upset about the latest democratic outrage anymore. What do you expect -- they're Democrats. This is what they DO. It's what they and their supporters have been doing during W's entire term, day in, day out. Heck, they've been doing it for all of my adult life, and probably before.
In the 80's I got upset when the Left called me racist/bigot/homophobe for holding different policy views than the Approved GoodThought versions. Now, in RWR's immortal words, it's just "There you go again". I just wish Republican officeholders could shrug it off as easily, rather than cowering in fear of the next NYT editorial.
In the 90's I got upset when Newt was investigated and fined for a book advance, while the same accusers ignored Whitewater, Rose Law Firm, Travelgate, and every other Clinton-gate up to and including Clinton's perjury. When Bob Livingston was hounded from office by those same Clinton defenders -- I guess we aren't supposed to "Move On" when it's "just sex" with Republican participants. Or, later, when Sen. Robert "KKK" "White N*****" Byrd was defended, but Trent Lott hounded out for much less offensive words (sure, there were other factors, like the fact that Lott was a spineless ineffective weasel of a Majority Leader). Now, the double standard is just part of the landscape -- there are NO rules but Power for Democrats, consistency is the hobgoblin of Republican minds, and I "should go put some ice on that".
In the new century, I was upset at the BDS -- the total derangement on the Left, far worse than any so-called "Clinton-Hatred". Worse because it was embraced not by a shunned, kook fringe, but by the entire mainstream of the Democratic party, such that each presidential candidate from Hillary to Obamessiah to Kucinich felt the need to make a pilgrimage to kiss the prime purveyer's ring at the Kos Konvention. I was outraged the first seven times the Media Wing of the Democratic party, with the help of treasonous Clinton holdovers in high places, torpedoed national security during an ongoing war, with NO thought or care for the damage to our country that would ensue, enflamed as they all are by an all-consuming hatred of Chimpy McBushHalliHitler, Darth Rove, Republicans, people in flyover country like me, and America as it is, instead of the Socialist Utopia they wish it were.
But now, I just realize that Godwin's Law -- as most other rules of civilized discourse or Federal Laws concerning national security and espionage -- don't seem to apply to the New Left or their Media Lackeys.
Like the story of the horse and the scorpion, I just can't get outraged anymore at the atrocious behavior of the Left -- whether it's the Kos Fringe (which is not so far from the Democratic Mainstream anymore), or of their elected puppets. This is what they ARE; this is what they DO.
You don't get angry at scorpions or poisonous snakes. You crush them. (Then you hide the evidence from the EPA).
Been off the grid this weekend thus far, and haven't had a chance to catch the Levin clip. Delahunt, unfortunately, is a prime example of the blind leading the dumb (to mix a metaphor). What's unfortunate is that I am sure that many of his colleagues privately concurred. To even try to spin this as "I misspoke", rather than "I fracked up, and spoke my true thoughts" assumes a higher level of ignorance of the greater population than I am willing to consider. What a tool. He really stepped in it with this one.
I hope DelaHunt received thousands of calls and e-mails telling him what they think of him. I did.
I was interested in the response he gave to Mark Levin about whether he would use waterboarding if the City of Boston was about to be obliterated. He said "waterboarding doesn't work". Now many experts would argue that point, however even if you move past that, I would ask him just what he was willing to do to intervene and stop the destruction.... would he beat the crap out of the guy? Would he pull his hair or slap him a few times? would he put a gun to his head and threaten to blow his brains out? Just exactly what would he personally be willing to do?
I am not a violent person, have never even fired a gun (will learn someday) nor would I want to kill anyone. However, I would do anything I could to stop the murder of millions and even potentially my own loved ones. I think any sane person would do the same.
Mr. Delahunt's obligation as a member of Congress is to protect our country from harm ...... apparently he doesn't think so.
"Contemplate the mangled bodies of your countrymen, and then say, 'What should be the reward of such sacrifices?' ... If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!"
--Samuel Adams
How many words of "I'm sure they are watching and I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you" have to be changed to make it "I'm glad to see you"? A whole bunch of them, like "I'm sure they are watching and...they finally have a chance." Eleven words out of sixteen. That's quite a "mis-speak." More of a Freudian slip, at best.
What he said and what he meant were both crystal clear. That weaselly non-apology doesn't even make sense. Only a Kool-Aid drinker or Massachusetts Democrat would believe it.
Pluto, the Ninth Planet - Forever!
Any politician being asked the hypothetical question about using waterboarding, when all he does is sit behind a desk, gas bagging all day and having no skin in the game, provides answers with little believability regardles of which side they're on. The issue, as I see it, is do you want to give those that are on the front lines, risking their lives when faced with dire circumstances including life and death of others, the ability to squeeze potential info from bad guys, that may help stop them from executing a terrorist plot. The answer is absolutely yes. Unfortunately, in our timid world, that's never the context of the question. We always give the politician the chance to pontificate about his or her morality and their unwillingness to use "torture" tactics, regardless of the circumstances. They never answer the question "What about if it's you? Your family? Your love ones? Have we all forgotten the TV spectacle of how fast the Washington moralists empty their offices when there's a perceived threat? Believe me, when it's them in the crosshairs, perceived or otherwise, they could give a hoot about morality or anything else; all they want is to be safe. This is why, when people like Delahunt do what they do, with reckless abandon, it ignites rage. They've successfully reduced this debate to moralistic sound bytes, played over and over again, to the point now that way too many people have lost perspective on the this issue completely. They're not even interested when it can be demonstrated where the tactics have worked and saved lives, and that's pathetic.

Mr. Delahunt's disgraceful exchange with Mr. Addington required no elaboration. Anyone viewing it could see, without difficulty, the arrogance with which Mr. Delahunt engaged Mr. Addinton. For this he deserves condemnation and censure. Furthermore, when he made the egregious reference to Al Queda, "I'm sure they are watching and I'm glad they finally have a chance to see you.", the smirk on his face and smugness in his voice were more than enough to incite rage. This from someone who wasn't even on the subcommittee. When people wonder why our country is void of leaders and in the mess it's in, they can start by doing a rollcall of Mr. Delahunt's colleagues in the Massachusett's Congressional delegation (all Democrats), who more often than not, are more concerned about their own grand standing and self-serving polarizing sound bytes then working for the good of the country. As hopeless as that might be, it wasn't enough to stop me from conveying my utter disgust to Mr. Delahunt's office.
