David Brooks suggests that Hillary Clinton believes she must destroy the Democratic Party in order to save it. Or something close to that. Republicans, of course, will do nothing to dissuade Clinton of the belief that somehow, someway, she will be able to capture the Democratic nomination. After all of these years of frustrating Republican hopes, it is high time that the Clintons work to fulfill them.

Meanwhile, the Democrats are looking for a savior:

U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney, whose district includes much of Martin and St. Lucie counties, is hoping he won't have to attend the Democratic Party national convention in Denver in August.

If he does go, that will mean the Democrats still haven't decided a nominee for the presidential election. And if neither Sen. Hillary Clinton nor Sen. Barack Obama has clinched the nomination by August, Mahoney says we may see a brokered convention, meaning the nominee could emerge from a negotiated settlement.

"If it (the nomination process) goes into the convention, don?t be surprised if someone different is at the top of the ticket," Mahoney said.

A compromise candidate could be someone such as former vice president Al Gore, Mahoney said last week during a meeting with this news organization's editorial board.

Usually, one hears this kind of talk early on during the primary and caucus process. One does not hear it in late March. Things are very, very dire in the unity-creation business if after so many months of a Clinton-Obama race, Democrats now feel that they have to turn to Al Gore to save them.

I'm keeping with the thought that Hillary's plan is to destroy the convention even if her chance is .0000001% to win the nomination. I believe that Rush is correct in his summation that she believes that 2008 is HER time and no junior (black) senator is going to keep her from the oval office. And I have no doubt that Ms. Ferraro's comments are not an isolated opinion.

But I do have a certain apprehension if Gore were to become involved. He is believed to have won in 2000 by the Dems and I doubt that there would be as much voter apathy without him.

They know that Obama cannot win the general election, but they are stuck. There is no way that he can go to the convention with the most delegates and not get the Dem nomination. There would be riots, not just in Denver, but in every big city in the country.

....in the Democrat party. The Hillary campaign feels like the world is against them. They feel the media is in the tank for Obama (they are), and Obama & his supporters are constantly attacking Hillary and her supporters, and vice versa. Every day the percentage of people in either camp that WON'T vote for the other candidate grows higher.

I agree with Phx in that Hillary feels that this is her one and only time to seek the presidency. If she misses this opportunity, it's probably gone forever, and with it, all of her hopes and dreams. Her ENTIRE LIFE has been in preparation for this moment.

Plus, I think she believes (and rightly so) that this nomination is NOT over, despite what the enlightened media elites like to tell us every night. One way or another, the superdelegates are going to decide this thing. Obama needs them just as much as she does. Hillary's strategy is to win big in the remaining primaries, possibly even pass Obama in the popular vote, and cast doubt on his general election prospects. This is how she will hope to peel off superdelegates. Finally, her trump card will be to raise hell about Michigan and Florida.

Otherwise, she can keep the race a stalemate until the convention, where she would hope to win it in a floorfight.

Floor delegates by justatron

Could it be that Hillary is hoping that more "pragmatic" state and local Dems are picked to be delegates to the convention? Since a lot of Obama's support seems to be amongst the young and new to politics, maybe she is counting on the fact that many times those chosen as delegates are people who have been involved in politics for years and would be more likely to vote for her on a second or third ballot?

If it goes to the floor..... by St. Louis Conservative

.....I think her strategy would be to cut some kind of deal with Obama where he steps aside and allows her to be the nominee. If the deal isn't cut with Obama directly, then she might try to pick off some of his supporters/delegates. She has already made statements about going after Obama's PLEDGED delegates.

The convention is so far away, we don't really know what will happen between now and then. Part of Hillary's strategy until the convention is to drive up Obama's negatives, shatter his halo, and make him look un-electable against John McCain in the general election.
