Tancredo Tanking
One Down, Two To Go

Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo plans to scale back his longshot presidential candidacy.
He's going ahead with previously scheduled events. After that, Tancredo said he would spend more time traveling to Republican-held congressional districts around the country to pressure Republicans to oppose the Senate immigration deal:
"We're going to continue to campaign, but I cannot devote as much time to the two states that we were focusing on," Tancredo said. "We'll still be there, but I can't do it as much because this bill has to be stopped, and it is immediate. This is for the country. I don't know any other way to do this."
Immigration reform has always been Trancredo's hot button. Nevertheless, his scaling back may have more to do with the fact that his candidacy just hasn't caught on.
What else can I say? One down, two to go.

How about saying this. That his love for his country means that he cares more about it that about his own political future. That he is willing to sacrifice any chance he has at the nomination for 2008 so that he can help save his country and his party from a bill that would be a disaster.
Or can't we say anything nice about any of the "longshots"? This man, and a number of the other "longshots" are much better men and better candidates than our current "top 3". Quite a sobering thought.
None. Nada. "His own political future," as you put it, is in the House of Reps, not in the White House. What he's doing here is helping his "political future" far more than going full-bore at a nomination that isn't going to happen for an office he'll bever hold. Kudos to him for doing the right thing.
Regarding "the other 'longshots'" who "are much better men and better candidates than our current 'top 3'," they need to go home. I disagree with my good friend CY in that I wouldn't limit those I'd send packing to just Paul, T. Thompson, and Tancredo - I'd also vote Brownback and Gilmore off the island, along with Duncan Hunter. Thanks for playing, folks; some of you helped advance the debate on your particular issues (Brownback, Tancredo), and some of you just wasted your and my time; regardless, it's time to go and to free up debate time and stage space for those who, whether "better men and better candidates" or not, have a shot at actually winning the nomination.
As I said Tuesday night, only Huckabee, in my opinion, has earned the right - through debate performance - to keep stumping with the big boys for a little while longer (though I wish that he would embrace that he's not going to win, as well, and decide to do what's right for himself and for his state by running for the US Senate).
Bob Frazier, there's no vitriol here or in CY's original post; we're just doing as we always do here at RS, and calling 'em like we see 'em. What more can you ask for than that?
Tom Terrific's "One Note" campaign, which proved to be a very sour note with some real nasty undertones seems to have fizzled. This weeks Republican debate featured a solo by Tom T. I guess, and the audience was not impressed.
I wonder if other "One Note" candidates from Kansas will take the hint soon?
He won't be missed.

Tom has made it pretty clear from the start that he entered the race to force the other candidates to talk about immigration and to drag them to the right on the issue. From that perspective, I think he has been spectacularly successful. He was of course helped by current events. I believe all but McCain and Brownback have come out against the President's shamnesty. Brownback never had a chance, and McCain, largely because of his position on immigration, has taken a serious hit.
In the 2004 election this issue only got mentioned in a one sentence answer by each candidate to one question in the third debate. Otherwise both Bush and Kerry were absolutely silent on the immigration issue and the MSM were there willing accomplises in helping to conceal their extremely unpopular positions on this issue. Largely because of Tom's presence in the race, that deception by ommission has not been possible to repeat.
If Tom quits now, or if he goes after Senators supporting the shamnesty, he will be able to quit knowing he succeeded at accomplishing his stated objective. If he is still on the ballot when the Wyoming primary rolls around he is going to get my vote. The man has more conviction and principles and a better conservative record than the four front runners put together.
This morning's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that, in the wake of the pullouts from the August Iowa straw poll by Rudy Giuliani and John McCain, Tommy Thompson is "completely rethinking" his strategy of using that as his springboard.
I like Tancredo, and he has the ability to say things that others are unwilling to say(i.e. if a nuke goes off in the US we should wipe Mecca off the map). But he was not too impressive in the debates and not ready for prime time. Too bad.
... by most reports, are serious people who holding up pretty well in the debates. They can stay around as far as I'm concerned.
Tommy Thompson, Gillmore, and Brownback just haven't gotten any traction. Tranc is a one-issue candidate, and Hunter's holding down the anti-immigration line a lot better than Tranc is anyway. And Paul is apparently our very own Kucinnich. These guys should give up.
They are just taking up space now.

I am praying that Huckabee shows some signs of life in the polls. One more debate in July and then the Iowa straw poll (I don't care if McCain and Rudy are out of it, it is still significant)... if Huckabee can jump into #2 or maybe even overtake Romney at #1 he stands a chance.
I would be genuinely taken off guard if the Republican base, all riled up over perceived fiscal laxity, rallied behind Gov. Huckabee anytime soon, myself.
Run like Reagan!
is thank God for people like Tancredo. We need more people who value defending the American working class and American cultural identity over political expediency and corporate interests. Even if you think he's a long shot, the man has shown personal courage throughout his campaign and has faced opposition from both liberal democrats and Rockefeller Republicans. He is a man who I can definitely support.
Good bye, and take Team America (first) with you.
Run like Reagan!

And take the other vanity candidates with him. Most of them are otherwise good guys, but with no chance of being nominated are just wasting our time in the debates, which would be a lot more useful with a smaller number of participants.
