And NPR reports that Mitt Romney is shaking up his staff today and taking more control himself. Also, I hear from multiple sources that he has shifted some staff around, pulling people from Florida and sending them to Michigan.

Mitt's a nice guy, but he lacks authenticity. No two states know him better right now than Iowa and New Hampshire and they rejected him. Flip flips didn't help and now the impression exists he will say anything to anyone. I don't feel that way, but that's the impression.

Anything's possible, but I see no way he can win in Michigan. McCain has some wind at his back and independent are going to show up for him. Mitt may say he's in it for the long haul, but he can't continue to finish second. At some point, reality must set in for him.

I will say I've greatly enjoyed listening to Hugh Hewitt melt down on the radio. Last night, he basically spun the results as a win for Romney even thought Mitt didn't even win among Republicans. Hugh is having another Harriet Miers moment and it's comical to listen to him.

You say that Romney "can't continue to finish second."

True, if there is someone else consistently coming in first. Until that happens, Romney can move forward with successive second-places--especially if he does so in states that award delegates proportionally.

Ditto on the sentiments of "A Texan." Of COURSE he can continue to come in second. As someone just recently pointed out on NRO, this isn't a basketball game where the only thing that matters in the end is the winner or loser: As long as other candidates are SHARING the first place finishes & getting womped when they DON'T come in first, Mitt remains on top. He keeps getting a good # of delegates, etc., etc. It's enough to keep him in the race until Super Tuesday, at least.

"Flip flips didn't help and now the impression exists he will say anything to anyone."

What?! Because he switched from pro-choice to pro-life? I did the same. It's called maturing. This has been blown out of proportion. ...And McCain WON'T say anything to get a vote? Mister Oh-Now-I-Get-It? His shamnesty was rejected for the joke it was, and now he gets it? Why isn't this flip-flopping?

Also, I believe Romney did win with Republicans, unless I am totally misunderstanding the situation. It was the Independant voters that gave McCain NH. If they were not there, Romney would have won.

McCain may win. Or, God-forbid, Huckabee. I still think Romney's extremely viable. What Republicans need to do is put away personality contests, shake off liberal, big government ideals, and return to reality. Conservatism wins. Moreover, conservatism is morally sound. And for all of Mitt's shortcomings, he is by far the most conservative of the front-runners.

Interesting. by St. Louis Conservative

Mitt has a history of turning things around. We'll see what he can do here. It will be interesting to see how he plays Michigan.

In 2004, Gephardt had to win in Iowa to have any chance. Dean was ahead. Ergo he had to go negative on Dean. But h Gephardt could not attack every candidate. So Kerry and Edwards were able to move forward.

Now Romney is in a 3 way fight in Michigan after having badly underperformed expectations in Iowa and New Hampshire. If he does nothing he loses. So he needs to go negative again and probably against McCain. But if he does, Huckabee rather than Romney likely is the beneficiary.

He shouldn't have to. by Jeff Emanuel

As I mentioned in the other thread, if ever a state's prevailing conditions player right into his wheelhouse, it's Michigan.

McCain's negatives (to conservatives) are already well-known. The contrast ads have not helped him, and they alienate independents.

Romney can win in Michigan by doing the following:

(1) Campaigning hard as an economy-fixer.

(2) Campaign hard (as he is) as a Washington outsider.

(3) Campaign hard as a nice social conservative--esp., if Huckabee actually foolishly abandons the state for South Carolina. There are tons of social conservatives in rural Michigan. But stay nice--because not only those social conservatives, but also independents, like nice guys.

Especially #1 and #2. Also agree with #3. I'm a SoCon and already see him as a nice guy, so that's good advice, too.

My question is.... by St. Louis Conservative

...how long can McCain & Huck play nice with each other? In Iowa, McCain was a non-factor, in NH, Huck was a non-factor. They're basically competing over the same ground right now and going forward.

Huck will wipe the floor with Mitt in Michigan.

What? Who said anything about Mitt? by St. Louis Conservative

I want to know when Huck and McCain have to start going at each other's throats.

Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.

God help us if that is true. There is NO WAY Huck can win in a general election.

BTW, I think "wipe the floor" is pretty strong. Mitt can win, and in the long run that would benefit the GOP in the general. Hill and Obama have major weaknesses, Mitt is conservative enough to rally the troops. McCain and Huck would demoralize the conservative base.

Those two are nothing but Republican cakes with a creamy Democrat filling. ...Hmm, must be close to lunch time. :-)

Rearranging Deckchairs On The Titanic by PetraeusForPresident

Too little, too late for Mitt.

His early state strategy has failed and he's been beat twice by candidates he's outspent 10 to 1. Once in his own backyard.

Wake up Mitt. Do the right thing. A loss in Michigan means get out of the race, endorse another candidate, and stop dragging down the Party with negative ads.
