The Democrat strategy of sneaking a bill to the floor they had over 450 days to get through Committee and Amendment and debate has succeeded. Obey and the Democrats have given Pelosi her trophy.
Using three votes on H R 2642 (Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act) this is how things turned out.
On funding 162 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan:
Yeas 141, Nays 149, "Present" 132, Not Voting 12
On troop withdrawal in 30 days:
Yeas 227, Nays 196, Not Voting 11
Yeas 256, Nays 166, Not Voting 12

....were there 132 "present" votes on the Irag/Afghanistan vote?
...why she has to resubmit a bill that will fund the war.

...all of the present votes were by Republicans. I'm just wondering what the point of voting "present" was when they could have voted Yay and had the bill passed.
...Nancy has to resubmit it. The original bill was split up for the purposes of letting the progressives "vote their conscience" on withdrawal, then edit it out in the reconciliation with the Senate version. Not going to happen, now; the bill failed.

...the Democratic leadership loaded some poison pills into the legislation, including an income tax hike.
That's why.

Anyway it went down, it should be entertaining to watch Pelosi try and fix this.

I would like to thank all those conservatives, who in 2006, have made this victory- I mean, surrender possible.
By staying home and not voting, you sure taught the country a bloody and costly lesson! I am sure our kids and grandkids will be able to clean up the mess.
We didn't lose in 2006 because Conservatives stayed home in 2006. We lost because Independents and conservative Dems didn't vote for our candidates. At best, self-identified Republicans are about a third of the electorate. The public doesn't support this war. I would argue because it was horribly managed for so long. Those on the left have other arguments. Either way, we have to take our lumps, retrench and build a party that Independents and conservative Dems will vote for. Otherwise, we will go the way of the Whigs.
Funny. You run "moderates" and they lose. And you blame conservatives.
for the last time, registered republicans did not vote significantly less than in any other off year elections, but republicans lost the independents completely.
And if you didn't like that, get used to it because in 2008 you probably WILL have a lot of republicans staying home.

If you recall many of the Democrats who won seats in 2006 ran as conservatives or quasi-conservatives. The problem was moderate Republicans who got outflanked by more politically savvy opponents.
This site having an anti-McCain sentiment, you sure do have a lot of balls to write a comment that is anti-conservative.
Why don't you pull your head out of your 4th point of contact and quit whining!

I would like to apologize, as I was pissed off when I wrote this little rant.
This is what the Dems can and will do now.
Just think of everything that they will do with an Obama presidency and huge majorities in both houses of Congress.
Let this vote be a warning to those who care...
New Orleans is built below sea level.
New Orleans will flood again.
So just move everybody, dammit!
For $94,000 per citizen (according to 2006 census data, the population of New Orleans is roughly 223,000), I suspect we could build them a whole new city.
Just think, new sewers...
(Rebuilding New Orleans would cost an estimated $80B to $100B...)
What a waste...
