SENATE TRIES TO SNEAK IMMIGRATION REFORMS THROUGH
By RS Insider Posted in Ag Jobs | Amnesty | Immigration — Comments (19) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »
It looks like the Democrats and amnesty-loving Republicans slipped the AG Jobs bill into the Senate emergency supplemental appropriations bill during committee markup today. This bill relates to giving amnesty to illegal aliens who work as migrant workers.
Early intelligence reports that it probably has provisions similar to the last AG Jobs bill that was considered – including amnesty provisions. It was supposedly a Feinstein/ Craig amendment and was accepted with a vote of 17 – 12.
If Harry Reid offers this version of the supplemental as a substitute to the House version, he will block out all other senators from any opportunity to strip this Ag Jobs provision, which will ultimately keep potential amnesty provisions in the war funding bill.
Your Senator's number is (202) 224-3121.
[UPDATE:] A source tells me that the GOP leadership is scrambling to stop this and that this was not done with the GOP leadership's blessing. The House GOP leadership is preparing to fight too.

The Ag Jobs bill gives amnesty to illegal aliens who work as migrant farm workers. The Democrats sneaked it into the defense appropriations bill today.

Was there a Republican version of the bill that did not include amnesty provisions on offer?
Ag jobs are big money, as are the crops, and it takes lots of labor (mostly from South of the Border) to pick those crops. I haven't heard of any Republican proposals to deal with those facts.
While I think this action just plain stinks, understanding the power of any big business labor needs and the refusal of Republicans to deal with the issue when they held the majority pretty much sums up how this happened.

we stop subsidising agriculture, and stop letting 5% of the economy stick it to the rest of us. Then let inefficient farmers either mechanize, plant different crops, or go out of business.
Gee, I wish I had an unprofitable business that the government shipped people to work for below minimum wage for me so I could then let all my neighbors pay the social costs.

I do not look forward to one of the last pieces of legislation proposed by what used to be the Republican party to do what you suggest. After all, the path you promote would just about doom this party to the dust bin of history.
The point that I made, which I see you choose to ignore; if Republicans will not lead, will not propose alternates to stupid actions by Donks, will not do anything of substance, then the g*&*(&*( Democrats will lead this country right off the cliff.

we have been headed off the cliff for seven years, with the republicans you just get there a little more slowly.
You see, it is because there has been no difference in KIND between the parties, only a difference in degree. A perfect example is the support from people like you and McCain for illegal immigration even though 70% plus of the electorate want it stopped.
Well, if the difference between Republicans and democrats is only more or slightly more subsidies, more or slightly more taxes, more or slightly more regulations. Then the public will always pick the Democrats, because, well, you can't out pander them ever.

The argument in specific in this thread is about how the Donks slipped some lousy provisions in the Ag bill to allow "Blue Cards" and a path to legal status for illegals. Rather than argue the merits of a Republican proposal against the one promoted by the Donks, you go off into some other territory, a bit telling.
But here's the thing, get used to it.
If Republicans continue their path of not being FOR anything just being AGAINST a long litany of issues, in short not proposing alternatives to DONK stupidity, then all I can see is more losses of seats and power for Republicans and more bad DONK legislation that goes unchecked and unchallenged by good Republican legislation proposals.
But hey back to the topic of this thread, maybe the surviving Republican leadership can have another "listening tour" on the immigration problem this summer, that'll do the trick, the heck with proposing doing anything about the problem with legislation.

conservative Republican voters. I doubt there are many who oppose this in Congress. This is what we sow with kinder, compassionate RINO leadership who just want to be friends with the left.

What are we supposed to do? They are just going to keep this up until something slips through.
What a bunch of dishonest, scheming scumbags.
You can be certain that amnesty (real amnesty) will be amended to nearly every bill that they can do so. That way they can force Republicans to vote no on bills that would be seen as harmful (such as the war supplemental like this time) to Rs.
They are using it as a poison pill.

Does anyone know if it’s constitutional for congress to continuously bring up the same dam bill - shamnesty of various flavors - over and over, regardless of how many times it is soundly defeated?
Shamnesty was shot-down in a tide of public outrage. The people spoke, loud and clear, seal the dam borders - fine employers - stop the illegal immigration! And, to make matters worse, they tried to sneak it through the back door – again!
The Republicans are getting to be as bad as the Democrats. Why, in a country of 300 million people, do we only get to choose between two undesirable candidates?
Great job on jumping on this one Redstate!
It's time to be afraid, very, very afraid. When you have legislators, whose methods of passing legislation utilize these types of tactics routinely, it's no longer fun and games. We're about to witness a extraordinary governmental heist in November that will take a decade plus to undo. This is what happens when you lose the communications war and give Democrats control of all branches of goverment (we in MA can attest to this). It may take more than ten years for the GOP to find a group of leaders able and willing to regroup. In the meantime, for those of you in favor of smaller government, conservative courts, less taxes, etc., you're not going to like what is about to happen.
it is the Democrats getting the blame. What I really cannot accept is horrible liberal policies and the Republicans get stuck with all the blame because they were too weak, greedy or cowardly to oppose it.

Here's the link to my post. Thanks Redstate.
Tax increases are why the Repubs are going to be in the minority for the next several years. If they don't shoot this one down, their goose is cooked in November. I truly wonder if the 'leadership' (and I use that term loosely) in the GOP has a grasp on the depth of the opposition to illegal immigration in this country. I thought they would have gotten the hint when their fund raising dried up when they tried to pass it last time.

Because I've passed my GED and everything, but I don't have a clue what you meant by the paragraph below the flashing red light.
And I'd rather not call Senators Durbin and Obama without some kind of understanding of why I'm doing it.
