A few years ago, HBO had a series about John Adams. It was a great illustration of how our country came to be. Citizens of the North American Continent went against England, one of the most powerful countries in the world. There were many disagreements amongst the American colonists on what to do about the overbearing English. But in the end they came to an agreement and joined forces to fight against the Redcoats. The Independence that the colonists fought so hard for was also independence for the individual, something unique for that time.
I am bringing this up because today we have infighting amongst ourselves on how to deal with a modern day threat – Socialism/Statism. Other labels we hear are the Progressives, the Left, Liberals, but we face the same threat. If those on the “Right” side of the aisle (Constitutional Conservatives as Vassar noted in a comment) do not unite, we will fail. As with the movie 300, we are fighting a Beast.
That Beast has been around for over 100 years and is trying to transform our country from what the Founding Fathers had laid out in our Constitution. We have been slowly, but incrementally moving away from the great experiment that is called the United States. For decades the Government has been taking away our freedoms, but we have also been guilty of giving them up. And now we struggle with a loss of faith in the America that our Founding Fathers established for us. The Government was founded to protect our liberty and freedoms, not to give out hand-outs, and have the citizens become dependent on the Government. A welfare state is being created from this dependency.
Too many in this country care more about who sleeps with whom in Hollywood, or who is the latest American Idol, than what is happening in DC. But there are many that are finally awakening from the sleep and joining the few that were standing guard. The Tea Parties and various other groups have made people look at what the Federal Government is doing. A phenomenal awareness has arisen among the people, more than I have ever witnessed before. The citizens are seeing incredible wasteful spending by their elected officials. When they cry for redress, they are ignored. It is almost as if Congress has forgotten they were elected by the people to work for the people.
The problem: there is much infighting among the groups that want to stop the behemoth in DC; people cannot hear what each has to say. Too much noise. We have fiscal Conservatives fighting the Social Conservatives. Libertarians fighting Conservatives and everything in between. We are all in this fight for the same reason, to stop the Statists from transforming the United States into something similar to a European Socialist state. We know we must work together, or separately we will fail. Common ground must be found; focus on the goals. What’s that saying, “Keep your eyes on the prize.” The prize is our nation, as we have known and loved her.

Interesting, the divided snake was drawn by Franklin...
nessa (Diary) Saturday, March 6th at 11:19PM EST (link)…and he is also attributed with the statement, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.” He drew the snake to accompany an editorial about the dis-united state of the American colonies in 1756. It was following the signing of the Declaration of Independence that he uttered his famous quote. I don’t know if he came up with the quote when he wrote the article and waited 20 years for the perfect moment to deliver it, or perhaps hanging was much on his mind as he debated committing treason with the rest of the Continental Congress that spring and summer.
I’m certain hanging was much on all their minds as these men took the first steps on the path to where we are today. There are no nooses threatening us, are we to do less?

Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”—Samuel Adams

This is a theme I've been pushing too.
Brian Hibbert (Diary) Sunday, March 7th at 8:28AM EST (link)As long and those of us with a conservative attitude remain divided, we can’t win. We won’t defeat the progressives/socialists/statists (who HAVE united to defeat us) until we stand together and fight to regain the freedoms we have lost.
We HAVE to stop the infighting.
I received an email invitation from the wife of the Libertarian candidate for Illinois Governor yesterday asking me to support him. As near as I can tell, the only significant difference between his platform and Bill Brady’s is the Libertarian wants some changes to election law that he thinks will make it more fair and he wants to return the Illinois National Guard from combat overseas unless they are sent in an officially declared war.
I sent a reply urging she and her husband to abandon the effort and throw his support behind Bill Brady. I explained that a divided conservative/libertarian electorate in Illinois would only guarantee that Pat Quinn get elected. I haven’t gotten a reply yet, and I don’t expect they’ll listen, but I have to TRY to convince them and others to join forces.

Socialism doesn’t work. It looks nice on paper, but it’s been tried and it’s failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

Black River Wolf (Diary) Sunday, March 7th at 12:28PM EST (link)I totally agree. I know of many people that said they wanted to give the Republicans a warming in 2006 and 2008. Look what that has gotten us, Pelosi and Reid, and Obama as President
3rd Parties are never going to help the Conservative Cause, it will only leave the Socialist/Statists in power and we will be walking in the forest for a long time. I have been saying this for the past 5 years, but some did not listen.
We must unite against the Beast of Socialism, and look past some of the few disagreements we have amongst each other.

Lincoln
redneck_hippie (Diary) Sunday, March 7th at 1:14PM EST (link)understood this. He did not promulgate the emancipation proclamation immediately even though his party was strongly abolitionist. He knew he would destroy the union and any chance of freeing the slaves if he did.
Think about the pressure he was under to “stand for his principles” in the question of abolition. Lincoln had to choose, and he chose union.
It’s a severe mistake to think we can defeat tyranny with divided goals and aims. It will not happen.
You got the die part right, my friend.
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Sunday, March 7th at 4:29PM EST (link)I hate to sound draconian, but that is exactly what they intend. The death of liberty. The death of freedom, the death of common sense. And the death on anyone or thing that gets in their way.
I think the death
Black River Wolf (Diary) Sunday, March 7th at 7:37PM EST (link)of common sense happened a long time ago, and our freedoms and liberty are getting chiseled away everyday.

We need to remember this when we're tempted to call
Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 12:22AM EST (link)a viable candidate for office a RINO or any other name during primary season.
Ask them tough questions, point out inconsistencies, but for gosh sakes don’t do the Democrats’ work for them by turning other conservatives permanently away from an eventual nominee.

I agree
Black River Wolf (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 4:03PM EST (link)When in the primaries it is a must to find the most conservative and push for that candidate, but after the primaries, vote for the closest to your philosophy, and sometimes that is not exactly a conservative, but definitely not a Socialist/Statist.

Of Rights
1stRichard (Diary) Tuesday, March 9th at 11:55PM EST (link)This is very simple and it is natural law and common sense, if you do not know and understand history you are doomed to repeat it. Are we teaching this in our schools and amongst our selves?
When I here the word rights, healthcare is a right, education is a right to all citizens shall have equal rights. We have the Bill of Rights yet few seem to understand that our United States Bill of Rights was all about limiting government, not expanding it. Yet I hear this perversion from both sides, mostly from supposed Democrats but also from some Republicans. They say, “The government has a responsibility to control rights to make them equal and fair.” So, where do we find such listed as a right, here it is in the old Soviet Constitution. I have been arguing this for some forty years, starting with my teachers and college professors, and now. I take this personally, sometimes a bit too personally as my great grandmother escaped the Ukraine and she had a lot to say. Mostly about the famine the Soviets used as ethnic genocide and of the millions that were murdered, how some were so hungry they were eating the rotting corpse of family members and dieing from the disease they carry. She escaped this Soviet Constitution, sick and ill from it to the land of freedom, America, the great experiment of freedom that is called the United States.
Furthermore lets see where we find “all citizens shall have equal rights”, here it is in the 25 points of the NSDAP Program were composed by Adolf Hitler and Anton Drexler. The government controlling equal rights worked out real good for the Jews, they were murdered and processed like animals, their hair was used to stuff seat cushions and everything they owned down to their fillings in their teeth was pilfered. In addition, we can go on to Mao but this is not a history lesson, this should be taught in and out of our schools and colleges. Yet progressives want to teach our children that our American government according to the Constitution is bad, we need to be more like them. They simply forget to teach what more like them really means.
If you do not know and understand history, you are doomed to repeat it.
This power grab by the government for our healthcare is the wrong path and we must not allow this perversion and bastardization of our Constitution. More people need to know what is down the path they are trying to cram down our throats. These horrors that lay ahead on this path they want to take us down are too great a risk and so horrific that it seems inconceivable they would want to try.
Unite or Die, death is most certain down the wrong path and it is not if or when that should be argued, it is the fact we must never go down this path. History has a cold hard lesson and it is far greater then the whims and profit of self. I pray we don’t take another step down this path and I am ashamed that this country is no longer what our family came here for, it is now becoming the very thing they wanted to escape from.
