John Murtha has died due to complications from gallbaldder surgery.
I was never a fan of his pork spending and sweet deals for local military contractors, but I never wanted him out of office this way. As with Kennedy I wanted them defeated in the war of ideas and not out of our lives forever.
I wish his family the best and will not say anything bad about him today, this is not a time of debate or politics.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A spokesman says Democratic Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a retired Marine Corps officer who became an outspoken critic of the Iraq war, has died. He was 77. He had been suffering complications from gallbladder surgery.–Breitbart

In the end...
In The Hook (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 3:15PM EST (link)My opposition to Murtha was all political, nothing personal. Aside from his vote on embroynic stem cell research, he was pretty darn pro-life and fairly conservative versus other members of his caucus. And honestly, he was nothing like Kennedy who sold out the lives of the unborn for political gain.
So yeah, he may have been a pork barrel king, but in the end that means very little. He gave great service to our nation as a Marine both at home and when he volunteered for service in Vietnam. The man is a Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Medal and Purple Heart recipient. Heck, he even got a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry! Truly exemplary in his time in the Corps.
May he forever rest in peace.

Agreed
Black River Wolf (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 3:20PM EST (link)I may not have liked his politics, but he was one of those that defended our country and did that with honor.
Today is not a day for politics, it should be a day of respect for a Marine.
I never volunteered for the military and give the utmost respect for those that did serve.

You've got to be kidding.
Third Street (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 3:30PM EST (link)John Murtha told the world, repeatedly, that eight U.S. Marines “killed innocent civilians in cold blood” in Haditha, a statement he took with him to his grave today, long after those Marines were exonerated.
If he hadn’t managed to worm out of ABSCAM 30 years ago he’d have been in prison and not in a position to chop these Marines’ legs out from under them.
You’ll have to hear these reminders here because the media isn’t going to mention a single word of this. The last thing we ought to be doing is giving them bipartisan cover for the elevation of John Murtha to Elder Statesman status.
John Murtha was about as low and as vile as a person could get and he destroyed good, honorable people. I’m sorry he’s dead, but I don’t forgive him and I’m not going to waste any well-wishes on his soul, assuming he had one.

I don't give him a pass but...
In The Hook (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 3:50PM EST (link)A) he was operating on party-line talking points and B) he was in the Corps and did a damn fine job when he was there. Yeah the Haditha situation was messed up but frankly I think that was a situation where you had an old man given a sheet of Dem talking points and prominence in the party because he was in the USMC and the Dems needed “legitimacy” to fight against the Iraq war.
I choose to think he was a good soldier who got caught up in a political game others were playing and was used as a tool of the far left. I do, however, wish he had apologized publicly when the furor died down for getting it wrong.
And anyway, the man is dead and he wasn’t Ted Kennedy, so he deserves either some respect or at least silence.

Doc Holliday (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 4:44PM EST (link)and backstabbed the Marine Corps. I agree with the silence idea, too bad we did not follow it. No diary would have been the best play, imho.

Just following orders is no excuse for a Marine...
acat (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 8:37PM EST (link)… why is it okay for a former Marine serving in Congress?
Bluntly, your point A is twice flawed. First, if (B) is true, then why did he violate the same requirements regarding Haditha? Would you give him a pass if he’d been “just following orders” while in the USMC?
Second, as you point out, he was an old man at the time – if he was leaning that heavily on external influence instead of his own values and judgment, then he should have retired.
I won’t speak ill of the dead, but I will say I’m happy he’s out of the House, and I feel sad for his family, but more so for the people of his district – Murtha had the clout to bring home the pork; regardless of who the replacement is, they’re in for hard economic times.

mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 8:43PM EST (link)you don’t know your tusche from a hole in the ground.
The Haditha situation was NOT “messed up” and Murtha stood up and publicly lied about the Marines involved and never bothered to apologize or offer to reimburse their families for unnecessary legal expenses. Not to mention the careers he ruined.
He was not a good soldier and he certainly was not a good Marine. He deserves no respect and his memory deserves to be one of complete dishonor. If his family doesn’t have the good sense to at least apologize to the Marines he defamed they can go to hell too.
I take no joy in saying it.
Third Street (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 3:53PM EST (link)But I can find no forgiveness for John Murtha in my heart. Those who can are better men than I.
What he did went way beyond the political. It went way beyond any transitory, you-win-some-you-lose-some matters. It must not be forgotten, not even for a day.

Good riddance. The only thing that will be missed is your apology to the Haditiha Marines specifically and the Corps generally.

By the way
In The Hook (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 3:55PM EST (link)Murtha’s death triggers a May 18th special election. Given that we have no shot of winning the Florida special election (even this year we don’t win a D +16 district) perhaps RS could take a look at Tim Burns and Bill Russell. Good opportunity here to ensure the vote the Ds get back in April can be countered the next month.

With Wexler gone, Cao back in our camp and Murtha dead… the Dems are now officially one vote short of Obamacare in the House.

We can either let this happen (with a little polite whining) and keep a generally-R vote, or we can hammer him until there’s another Dem in the seat.
Same will be true of Murtha’s former chair.

Makes me wonder about something
Finrod (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 4:26PM EST (link)I wonder what the proportions are, when talking about Congressmen that die in office, what percentage are Dems and what percentage are Reps. Going off nothing but gut instinct, I would expect that over 60 percent are Democrats, simply because it seems that many Dems cling to the reins of government until the Grim Reaper pries it out of their cold dead fingers.
Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?

morstar150 (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 9:02PM EST (link)Who are you to damn anyone? I have nothing to say about John Murtha on the day of his death, except that I hope his family finds peace and comfort in the fact that most Americans are compassionate loving and forgiving people.
Rest in Peace Mr. Murtha, your judgment is with the Lord not me. In my compassion I will pray for his soul and all the souls of the faithfully departed. This is not a political issue it’s an issue of respect for life. I didn’t live his life but I can live my own, and my upbringing does not allow me to spit on anyone’s grave out of respect for his grieving family. I am not one without sin.

As for his grieving family, they are cut from the same mold as he was– they enrich themselves at the expense of all of us. No one with the name “Murtha” should ever be allowed to hold public office again.
Wow! I just thought we were different.
morstar150 (Diary) Monday, February 8th at 9:20PM EST (link)Last mention of Murtha. Of all places I think everyone here knows who John Murtha was. I also think most Americans understand the Haditha situaton, certainly once again those who reside here do.

And this goes for everyone. I, myself and me will not go after someone when they are not even in the ground yet. These are human beings we are talking about. In fact, BRW, took the high road with this, some of us will remain silent, others will speak out, but your remarks make it seem as if the diarist spoke ill of Murtha, and that is not true. It is not clear if you intended otherwise.
