Letter from a Dodge dealer

It’s called “Hope & Change” and it’s O-UTRAGEOUS. I understand bankruptcies are part of our free market system, but this isn’t a bankruptcy. It’s government theft. This is just the tip of the Obama iceburg and we are all going to be hit by this thing, so prepare yourselves. Wake up, Florida, Crist will do more of the same if it means he can stay in power. Wake up, America, we are on the precipice!

I don’t know if I’m angry, sickened, disgusted, livid, helpless, or all of the above. Funny thing…I haven’t seen this guy’s plight plastered all over the media. How could the MSM have missed this story? I’m stunned!

btw- you lawyer types out there – is there any legal recourse that these people have against *anybody*?

I’m with eburke. There’s GOT to be a legal angle here. There’s no way this can happen, even in Obama’s America (well, not YET, anyway).

but I’d like to know what cost burden dealers are on the manufacturers? Don’t they pay franchise fees to cover admin costs? As long as they are selling minimum amounts of vehicles they should be a positive contributor.

Secondly, has anyone considered the opportunity cost of having those dealers as fresh new competitors when they pick up other lines, mostly of which will be foreign?

All this so we can save the jobs of some union a**holes in Detroit who don’t work hard enough to be making the GD money they were making. I’m sorry putting a screw in a hole shouldn’t warrant $50 + an hour plus and a pension for life. I will never buy another American Company car ever again. They don’t deserve my business and their products are crap, always have been. Probably because they were built by spoiled union thugs getting something for nothing and expecting us to all like it.

What most people don’t get is that Toyotas, Hyundai’s and Hondas are built here too by good people who earn a good living but aren’t sucking off the tit of all of us.

I feel really sorry for all those dealerships that lost their companies thanks to the lightweight in the White House.

Maybe all the dealership owners who voted for that idiot should have thought of that before voting for what was plain as day to the rest of us living in the real world.

what Americans have come to tolerate. I hope at some point conservatives can implement some of our policies again before the country is utterly destroyed.

as the owner of a Jeep, you should be thankful because they are pieces of crap! why my 1994 Mitsubishi has gone through 1 radiator in 16 years as opposed to 4 for a Jeep in 8 years defies logic. maybe the $300,000 parts inventory is because Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler manufacture junk. sorry- I empathize with his position and don’t believe the government should be involved in any business, but Chrysler makes crap. If you sell a bad product, suffer the consequences in a free market economy. That is the bottom line.

However, if GE simply closed its doors, then he would also be out of business. There would be very little difference (in terms of the wellbeing of the guy who wrote the letter) between corporate collapse and corporate collapse + chapter 11 bankruptcy.

As it is, he’s just whining.

I am so sorry that the Government has seen fit to steal your property and give it to the UAW proletariat. While it is of little comfort to you, it is likely that the market will punish the rest of dealers mercilessly as the company decends into bureaucratic incompetence.

Fight for your rights to force them to take back the inventories and compensate you for the loss of your property. It is a moral imperative.

I agree with you. The unions brought this upon themselves. All the
unions — car, plumbers, nat.l education assoc,, etc. are the biggest
contributors to the Democratic Party. I do feel sympathetic to those who
will suffer from collateral damage because of the greed & corruption of
the unions. I’m 57 years old, & for the first time I bought a foreign-made car.
I now feel that if I buy an American-made car, I will only be supporting
obama’s cash cow.

To know where the auto companies are headed, look at what happened to all of the private fixed-route bus companies that formerly existed.

Back in the early 1970′s the government effectively nationalized local privately owned bus companies when they created regional transit authorities (rta) to take them over. It was done in a way to make it appear that local government had local control, but that was and is a facade.

Truth is, the union was given control under a provision referred to as 13-C which gave the unions tacit veto power over federal funds.

Further, labor contracts were written so that any attempt at layoff or reduction in force of union members required that they continued to be paid by the rta whether they worked or not. (think auto company Job Bank?)

This gave the unions control over whether or not work could be subcontracted out to private companies. In other words, once hired, never fired.

Ronald Reagan attempted to work around this with an executive order requiring that rta’s contract with private operaters on all new expanded business.

In the 1980′s this caused many rta’s to contract with private taxicab companies when ADA requirements began to cause the creation of comparable service (door to door) for the disabled who might otherwise have rode the aforementioned government run fixed route bus service.

Bill Clinton rescinded Ronald Reagan’s executive order when he first took office as President, giving full control back to the unions.

While the government “purchased” failing private bus companies who could not offer subsidized fares to their riders, they have lured riders away from privately owned taxicab companies without paying them a cent.

If you want to know what the future has in store for the auto companies, look no further than what happened to passenger transportation over the last 38 years.

Fact of the matter is that if the bus or subway fares were not subsizided by taxpayers who did not ride the service, fares would be much, much higher.

I feel sorry for Ford as they try to remain independent. However, Henry survived interference from the government before and we hope current management can remain just as tough as him.
