Those Malefactorus Men in their Lying Machines

And the Women too…

There is a plethora of experienced liars in this fine nation of ours. In the private sector the king is Bernie Madoff. In the political world it’s hard to tell who is the biggest liar, it’s like it’s part their DNA…first a little background.

A 1996 University of Virginia study led by psychologist Bella DePaulo said lying is part of the human condition. Most of the time I’m sure we’re just trying to be nice. (When your wife asks Do I look fat in this dress?…there’s only one answer) Such ‘White’ lies are delivered 10 to 20 times more often than just saying nothing. DePaulos studies showed that men and women lie with equal frequency, though women are more likely to lie to make other people feel good, while men tend to lie to make themselves look better….ouch.

The question is…How do you know when someone’s selling you ocean-front property in Arizona?

(Mbecker has some, but it’s not for sale…yet)

Sometimes we use sensors to detect fluctuations in blood pressure, pulse, respiration and sweat in response to probing questions. But the Two problems with polygraphs is…One, they only work about 80% of the time, Two, it’s not like we are going to lug that machine to a politicians office or rally.

“Cues to deception differ according to factors such as the type of lie and the motivation for getting away with it”…so, you have to use your instinct.

Here is some helpful hints…

Highly-skilled liars don’t break a sweat, but the rest of us get a little fidgety. Shifty eyes, higher vocal pitch, perspiration and heavy breathing.

“Liars are often reluctant to admit ordinary storytelling mistakes. When honest people tell stories, they may realize partway through that they left out some details and would unselfconsciously backtrack to fill in holes. They also may realize a previous statement wasn’t quite right, and go back and explain further.” says DePaulo.

Another clue…imprecise pronouns. To psychologically distance themselves from a lie, people often embellish their lies with second and third person pronouns like “you” “we” and “they”.

(if you’ve noticed, Moby’s are very fond of using “we”…most times a dead giveaway, but not all the time.)

Politicians, who are great examples of liars, are likely to ask that questions be repeated and begin responses with phrases like, “to tell you the truth,” and “to be perfectly honest”

When telling lies, politicians will often make hand gestures to the rhythm of their speech.

Will they ever come clean? Not likely.

My last diary was about someone I trust…this diary is about people I don’t trust….let’s begin.

Senate Banking committee Chairman Christopher Dodd:

Some time back Dodd told CNN’s Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer that he was responsible for adding the bonus loophole into the stimulus package that permitted AIG and other companies that received bailout funds to pay bonuses.

The very day before, Dodd denied to CNN that he had anything to do with the adding of that provision.

He spent the full 24 hours lying to the American people, and then, he and his pal Barney Frank decided they wanted to publicly name the people who received the bonuses authorized by Congress. It was a lame attempt to deflect blame for their own actions.

If Dodd had a shred of honor, he’d resign. I guess if he had a shred of honor, he wouldn’t have lied.

TED BARRETT, CNN CONGRESSIONAL PRODUCER: Because there’s the suggestion today being made that you received more money from AIG than any other senator. And that you were responsible for the (change). And so just — you know, again, I just want to get at — you’re saying you had nothing to do with that change?

DODD: Absolutely not.

BARRETT: And there was nothing you were doing that was aimed at protecting AIG…

DODD: No. Not at all. Not in the slightest. Absolutely.

BARRETT: … which is in your — which has offices — this particular office in the state of Connecticut?

DODD: Well, it does. But they (INAUDIBLE) — but the point is when that language left the Senate that I wrote, that was not included.

Lying crapweasel.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner:

Timma lied to the IRS and cheated them out of $34,000 in taxes..which he was forced to repay.

Timma just recently payed a visit to China. Geithner went there to reassure the Chinese government that China’s huge holdings of dollar assets are safe and that he has deep faith in a strong US currency.

“Chinese assets are very safe,” declared Geithner at the Beijing University, where he studied Chinese in 1982.

Loud laughter erupted from the professors and students in the audience. They clearly didn’t buy it.

On the first day of Geithner’s visit to China, China Daily reported that seventeen out of 23 economists in China said they deemed the country’s vast holdings of US bonds “risky.”

Chinese folks are generally polite, so the laughter was a gentle smackdown, the Chinese populace obviously doesn’t share his convictions.

Along with Dodd, the bezonian Tim Geithner may have misled Congress in his testimony about the AIG bonuses also.

He told congressional leaders that he learned of AIG’s impending $160 million bonus payments to members of its troubled financial-products unit on March 10.

New York Federal Reserve informed Treasury staff that the payments were imminent on Feb. 28 That is 10 days before Treasury staffers say they first learned of the bonus plan, and three days before the Administration launched a new $30 billion infusion of cash for AIG.

Yes…he’s a low-life libertine.

Kansas Gov Kathleen Sebelius:

Sebelius admitted to “unintentional errors” on her 2005, 2006, and 2007 tax returns to the amount of $7,040, which she was forced to pay back.

Sebelius’ husband is a magistrate judge…it’s hard to fathom a governor and her spouse, a magistrate judge, are either too incompetent to figure out their taxes or that they attempted to cut corners and find loopholes in the tax code….but they did.

And then we have this…she’s furiously trying to cover up that she hosted a lavish secret party for the one and only Dr. Tiller the baby killer and his entire abortion clinic staff at the official governors mansion in April of 2007. Sebelius has long been an avid supporter of the most radical abortion policies.

In an interview published on October 29, 1989, in the Wichita Eagle, Sebelius, who was then a member of the Kansas House of Representatives said, “I think for me and a lot of other people, there are certain inalienable rights established for a person, but those are not applied in utero”

Turns out she’s a fibber and charlatan.

Charlie Rangle, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee:

You know, the committee that decides where and how to spend our tax money? The Sunlight Foundation has looked at Rangel’s various tax problems and determined that he failed to report taxable events 28 separate times. Here is what they found…

“We took a look at his filings going all the way back to 1978, the first year members were required to disclose information on their personal finances, and found 28 instances in which he failed to report acquiring, owning or disposing of assets. Assets worth between $239,026 and $831,000 appear or disappear with no disclosure of when they were acquired, how long they were held, or when they were sold, as the operative House rules at the time required.”

It’s hard for me to wrap my head around that amount of money…he *is* the missing li…errr…he is a fraud, a grifter and a opportunist.

Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House:

What did Pelosi know and when did she know it?

It appears that Pelosi may have stretched the truth.

QUESTION: Madam Speaker, just to be clear, you’re accusing the CIA of lying to you in September of 2002?

PELOSI: Yes, misleading the Congress of the United States, misleading the Congress of the United States. I am. They do it all the time.

But, that was yesterday…Today, she said she was talking about the Bush Administration.

Congressional leaders were briefed in detail about techniques used in the Central Intelligence Agency’s interrogation program.

Pelosi said that the CIA briefed her in February 2002 about waterboarding and other torture techniques being contemplated by the CIA, but that she was specifically told that waterboarding was not being used. That’s a whopper. In fact, by that time, Zubaydah had already been waterboarded a number of times. A CIA memo dated to Sep 2002 says Pelosi received a “briefing on EITs (enhanced interrogation techniques), including use of EITs on Abu Zubaydah, background on authorities and a description of particular EITs that had been employed.”

The release of that CIA briefing timeline, Pelosi said, was a “diversionary tactic to take the spotlight off of those who conceived and developed and implemented these policies”…that’s a tall-story.

Rod Blagojevich former Governor of Illinois:

Did The One talk to Blago or not about the Senate seat?

The One says “I did not discuss the Senate seat with the governor at any time” David Axelrod said they did. Then, Ax said he was ‘mistaken’…Now, we’ve heard a billion times about how Axelrod and The One are inseparable, so how could Ax have been ‘mistaken’?…could it be that he was misrepresenting the truth?

Blago, it seems, was taped as he was conversing with close friends about what he would bring to the potluck on Friday night…he was asked about that conversation and said he hadn’t heard it, couldn’t remember and thus would not be able to comment on it.

Just after saying he couldn’t comment on taped conversations that he could not recall and has not heard, he said he is confident that if the American people could hear “the entire tapes” he would be exonerated…Really?

How is it that Blago could be certain that he would be exonerated by the very tapes that he insists he himself has not heard? Logic is a foreign concept to frauds. For him to say the tapes would show him to be innocent of illegal activity is to say that he knows what was said on the tapes. I can only conclude that he either lied about not knowing what is on the tapes, or he lied about knowing exactly what’s on them. WTF? Perhaps he lied on both counts.

First class reprobate.

Temporary US Senator from Illinois..Roland W. Burris:

“I Ain’t Do It!”…He appears to be having a senior moment.

In January, the Illinois House impeachment committee asked Senator Burris if he had spoken to Blago or any of his staff about his desire for the Senate seat once held by the One.

Back then he said he had only spoken to Lon Monk, a former aide of Blago’s.

Now he’s updating his story a bit. He has suddenly recalled speaking to three or maybe four more people. Including Blago’s brother Rob three times about the Senate seat. Burris now admits that the brother of disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich hit him up for about $10,000 in campaign donations.

That contradicts Burris’ sworn testimony. And Blago’s brother? Can’t get much more ‘inside’ than that.

In a statement released by Senator Burris’ office, he explains, “there were several facts that I was not given the opportunity to make during my testimony to the impeachment committee” Not given the opportunity to make? Bullhockey says state Rep. Jim Durkin, the ranking Republican on the impeachment panel.

“This wasn’t a couple of questions that I can understand someone may forget, it goes way beyond that…To say that he wasn’t given the opportunity to explain himself is a load of BS.”

Maybe he didn’t have time to answer all the questions? Maybe he wasn’t clear on whether he forgot something or not? Maybe that was Perjury, Chicago style. Burris sounds a lot like Barry when he said the mortgage thing with Rezko wasn’t good idea after all. Oh, and then there is Barry’s famous line “Ayers was just a neighbor from the neighborhood”

Burris has a good teacher and seems to be cut from the same cloth as the blackguard in the White House.

William “Refrigerator” Jefferson (D-crook):

Can you believe the people of LA elected dollar bill Jefferson to nine terms in Congress before he was ousted in December? He is accused of 16 counts of bribery, racketeering and violation of the Corrupt Foreign Practices Act for allegedly demanding and, in some cases, accepting payments to family-owned businesses in return for his help winning approval of projects in several West African nations.

The case is best-known for the $90,000 in marked bills FBI agents say they found stuffed inside his freezer, right next to those little frozen burritos, you know the ones….ummm.

Jefferson has promised an honorable explanation for why the cash he took ended up stored in the cooler. He’s a Real trickster, that one.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick:

Old Kwame and his chief of staff lied about their relationship last summer at a police whistle-blower trial that has cost the cash-strapped city millions.

Hotpants Kilpatrick and chief of staff Christine Beatty agreed to plead guilty to felonies, resign and they will serve jail time after a text-message scandal (gasp) the Detroit Free Press exposed in 2008.

The newspaper obtained nearly 14,000 text messages between the pair that exposed lies they told while under oath in the lawsuit. Their effort to cover up those lies and their affair cost the city more than $9 million.

Those two are good-for-nothing provacators.

Mass. Senator Ted Kennedy:

This is your Senator on why he supports amnesty for those sneaking across the Rio Grande River along the Mexican border…

“I just couldn’t bear the though of anyone drowning in a river while trying to make a better life for themselves”

Ted Kennedy and the war on poverty…

“We have 36 million Americans that are going to bed hungry every night. 36 million Americans! And 12 million of those are children!”

Is he saying that 10% of Americans go to bed hungry every night? That is flatly false. As has been widely noted, the major food-related problem for poor children isn’t hunger – it’s obesity.

The man is a Wastrel.

The almost HHS Secretary Tom Daschle:

Tom Daschle cheated on about $128,000 in taxes, during the vetting process to become HHS secretary he was Forced to pay it back.

Here’s how it happened, after being defeated in his 2004 re-election campaign to the Senate, Daschle in 2005 became a consultant and chairman of the executive advisory board at InterMedia Advisors. Daschle began using the services of an InterMedia car and driver. The Cadillac and driver were never part of Daschle’s official compensation package at InterMedia, but Mr. Daschle didn’t declare their services on his income taxes, as tax laws require.

Daschle reimbursed the IRS $31,462 in taxes and interest for tax year 2005…$35,546 for 2006 and $34,935 for 2007.

D.C. is crawling with scalawags and swindlers.

Dingy Harry Reid (d-puke):

MR. GREGORY: Let me ask you about the war in Iraq. In April of 2007, this is what you said: “I believe myself that … this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything.” Were you wrong?

SEN. REID: David, I first met General David Petraeus in Iraq. He was training the Iraqi forces at that time. At that time, he knew it wasn’t working. After he became the commander in Iraq, he and I sat down and talked. He said to me, and he said within the sound of everyone’s voice, “The war cannot be won militarily.” I said it differently than he did. But it needed a change in direction. Petraeus brought that about. He brought it about–the surge helped, of course it helped. But in addition to that, the urging of me and other people in Congress and the country dictated a change, and that took place. So…

MR. GREGORY: But you said the surge was not accomplishing anything. Even Barack Obama said last fall that it exceeded everyone’s expectations and succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.

SEN. REID: Listen, at that–the time that statement was made, the surge–they weren’t talking about the surge. Petraeus added to the surge some very, very interesting things that changed things. He said a lot–just simply numbers of troops is not going to do the deal. What we need to do is work with the Iraqi people, which we haven’t done before. That’s where the Awakening Councils came about, as a result of David Petraeus’ genius. He’s done–he will be written about in the history books for years to come. My original statement was in keeping what David Petraeus said; that is, the war cannot be won militarily.

Except for the sentence, “I first met General David Petraeus in Iraq, he was training the Iraqi forces at that time” everything that Reid says is an unequivocated misrepresentation.

Senator Chuck E. Schumer:

He should be thrown out of office for his numerous fabrications.

“And let me be clear, the violence in Anbar has gone down despite the surge, not because of the surge. The inability of American soldiers to protect these tribes from al Qaeda said to these tribes we have to fight al Qaeda ourselves. It wasn’t that the surge brought peace there. It was that the warlords took peace there, created a temporary peace there.”

And what about his desire to push the ill-conceived “Fairness Doctrine” down our throats?

Chuck and his crew intend to kill free speech so that his party can consolidate its domination of American politics…simple.

“I think we should all be fair and balanced, don’t you?”

The only thing the left wants to balance, is AM talk radio. Not one other medium, fancy that.

“The very same people who don’t want the Fairness Doctrine want the FCC [Federal Communications Commission] to limit pornography on the air. I am for that… But you cant say government hands off in one area to a commercial enterprise but you are allowed to intervene in another. That’s not consistent”

That statement might just be top 5 most ignorant statements. And by the way, the Democratics would never want Republicans to have this kind of power, no no no.

Bawney Fwank (D-slug):

Where should I start with this one?…we’ll keep it simple…first up

“Bubble? What bubble?” And now..

OK, so now home ownership was a conservative idea, and Frank suddenly realizes that people should only buy houses when they can afford them. Only a few politicians can lie so effortlessly with such a lack of conscience.

These two videos should become required viewing for anyone who wants the real story of how the economy collapsed. Barney Frank’s fantastic leadership sent the entire world economy crashing into a heap.

Liar? Clueless? Jedi mind trick?…”These aren’t the toxic assets you’re looking for”

“The Embarrassment” Maxine Waters:

This one is easy.

Uh…uh uh…..uh…..LOL

Senator Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee (may God have mercy on our souls):

So, when Patrick is questioning Sonja Sotomayor he intentionally misquotes Sotomayor during his opening comments. Leahy said, “You said that, quote, you ‘would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would reach wise decisions’”

That’s not quite accurate. What Sotomayor actually said was: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life”

Patrick you big softy. After the hearings were over, Leahy was asked about the misquote, “I was doing it from memory,” Leahy explained. “But I knew that she would..she stated exactly what she said, and the statement is in the record.” Leahy then said that he did not consider Sotomayor’s precise words very important…her response was much more critical. What?

Here’s the video…looks like Leahy is reading from text when he misquotes Sotomayor…hmmm

John F’n Kerry (D-north vietnam):

Kerry’s vice-presidential running mate, John Edwards, once said, “If you have any question about what John Kerry’s made of, just spend three minutes with the men who served with him”

OK…Here’s what those men think about John Kerry

Lieutenant Commander George Elliot: “John Kerry has not been honest about what happened in Vietnam.”

Ensign Al French: “He’s lying about his record.”

Lewis Letson, lieutenant commander, medical center: “I know John Kerry is lying about his first Purple Heart because I treated him for that injury.”

Gunner’s mate Van
Odell: “John Kerry lied to get his Bronze Star. I know. I was there. I saw what happened.”

Lt. Jack Chenoweth: “His account of what happened and what actually happened is the difference between night and day.”

Rear Admiral Roy Hoffman: “John Kerry has not been honest.”

Cmdr. Adrian Lonsdale: “He lacks the capacity to lead.”

Lt. Larry Thurlow: “When the chips were down, you could not count on John Kerry.”

Lt. Bob Elder: “John Kerry is no war hero.”

Lt. Cmdr. Grant Hibbard: “He betrayed all his shipmates. He lied before the Senate.”

Lt. Shelton White: “John Kerry betrayed the men and women he served with in Vietnam.”

Gunner’s mate Joe Ponder: “He dishonored his country, he most certainly did.”

Lt. Bob Hildreth: “I served with John Kerry. John Kerry cannot be trusted.”

John Kerry is a man who wouldn’t know the truth if it hit him in the face.

Algore:

‘Arthro-made Glormingbal Climachange’…dam, I can never get that right…

Hey look…Ms. Barbara wants Al to finish lying before we move to the next question…

Smell that?…his pants must be on fire.

..speaking of pants on fire..

Slick Willy Clinton:

I want you to listen to me….

“I did not have Sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky”

He is truly the King of tergiversating…poor Hillary.

VP Joe ‘the Dumber’ Biden:

Joe Biden, vice-president of the United States, is a chronic liar. Karl Rove put it best, Biden is “a liar and a blowhard.” One of his biggest distortions is about a ‘private meeting’ he supposedly had with George W. Bush…Joe claims he criticized the President for lack of leadership. That’s rich. As Rove and others will tell you, no such meeting ever took place. Biden is bearing false witness.

In the vice-presidential debate, Biden lied about the Wilmington, Delaware restaurant where he supposedly met with the common folk of that city. In fact, the restaurant, Katie’s Diner, had been closed for more than 15 years. Biden’s time spent with regular Joe’s was a fantasy.

At another point in the debate Biden looked down his nose at Gov. Palin for ignoring the financial costs of the Iraq war. He said that, every month, the struggle in Iraq was costing more than the entire war in Afghanistan. Not even close, the Iraq War was costing $8-10 billion per month. The total cost of the war in Afghanistan had been $172-200 billion. He’s full of Hot air.

Then he dropped this whopper, that he hadn’t really voted for the war in Iraq. OK, that was an outright lie. He ‘doesn’t remember’ but at the time when the War Authorization was being debated, Biden along with many others insisted that Saddam Hussein “must be eliminated”

Before I forget, did I mention these are all Democrats.

And now for the biggest, most humongous and immense, manipulating liar of all time.

Barack Hussein Obama:

I don’t have room for all his lies, but I’ve seen llists that top 150….let’s cherry pick some of the most egregious with direct Obama quotes…

h/t to bighollywood.breitbart.com

“not because I believe in bigger government — I don’t — not because I’m not mindful of the massive debt we’ve inherited — I am.” Speech to Congress, February 24, 2009

“And that is why I have ordered the closing of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and will seek swift and certain justice for captured terrorists” Speech to Congress, February 24, 2009

“My administration has also begun to go line by line through the federal budget in order to eliminate wasteful and ineffective programs.” Barack Obama doesn’t have a line item veto, maybe he forgot?

“My immediate task is making sure that the second half of that money, $350 billion, is spent properly. That’s my first job.” Press conference February 9, 2009, talking about TARP money.

“It also contains an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability, so that every American will be able to go online and see where and how were spending every dime. What it does not contain, however, is a single pet project, not a single earmark, and it has been stripped of the projects members of both parties found most objectionable.” Press conference February 9, 2009 talking about his own economic bill.

“Second is recognition of the limits of the judicial role, an understanding that a judges job is to interpret, not make law, to approach decisions without any particular ideology or agenda, but rather a commitment to impartial justice” He was introducing Sotomayor who has been documented many times saying judges make policy, among other things.

“Its not just enough to change the players. We’ve gotta change the game.” He has appointed over 150 leftover Clintionistas.

“I opposed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. It should be repealed and I will vote for its repeal on the Senate floor. I will also oppose any proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban gays and lesbians from marrying” Remember, he’s done nothing to repeal the DOMA…just words.

“I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community” Talking about Rev. Wright shortly before he disowned him.

“To those Americans whose support I have yet to earn…I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President, too” This administration, to paraphrase the famous observation, ‘is creating an economic desert and calling it prosperity’

Barry wants ‘Brigade Combat Teams’ to be renamed to ‘Brigade Support Teams’ so that he can say there are no more ‘combat’ troops in Iraq…This would be like calling your Rottweiler a Chihuahua because your condo does not allow Rottweilers.

Obama promised that “if you like your health plan, you can keep it” even after he reforms our health-care system. We’ve been over this…the bills now before Congress would force you to switch to a managed-care plan eventually with severe limits on your access to specialists and tests. And as soon as anything changes in your existing, such as a change in copays or deductibles, which many insurers change every year, you’ll have to switch to a Gubmint plan (House bill, p. 16-17).

If Barry gets his way, when you do your taxes, if you can’t show the IRS that you are in a ‘qualified’ plan, you’ll be fined thousands of dollars, probably as much as you would pay normally for a health plan for your family, THEN, automatically enrolled in a randomly selected plan (House bill, p. 167-168).

There are many many more, but there’s just not enough room for all the mendacities.

It’s obvious that Liberals have learned to lie about what they believe because they know if they told the truth, no one would vote for them. They tried that for about 20 years and they kept getting beaten. Now, they speak like moderates, create legislation that the far left loves and hide it from their employers….We the People.

I blame Major news media outlets, loose-cannon university professors and stupid ‘Independents’ that stayed home, for our current situation. It will be extremely hard to win our country back unless everyone has access to the un-varnished truth. Money is not the root of all evil, fraudulence and dishonesty are…..oh, and Acorn.

Unlike the pundits I DO NOT predict that Florida will win it all, in fact I think they will lay some eggs and get beat twice. I know that is not common thinking. But I believe that with the great coaching in the SEC they have got to have enough film on Tebow and Meyers program to learn how to at least pull a couple of upsets.

My prediction is USC vs Texas for all the marbles.

Must disagree about money here GC. "Until and unless you discover that money is the root of all good, you ask for your own destruction. When money ceases to be the tool by which men deal with one another, then men become the tools of men.

stang (Diary) Sunday, July 19th at 12:59PM EST (link)

From Atlas Shrugged.

Rearden heard Bertram Scudder, outside the group, say to a girl who made some sound of indignation, “Don’t let him disturb you. You know, money is the root of all evil – and he’s the typical product of money.”
Rearden did not think that Francisco could have heard it, but he saw Francisco turning to them with a gravely courteous smile.
“So you think that money is the root of all evil?” said Francisco d’Aconia. “Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can’t exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil?
“When you accept money in payment for your effort, you do so only on the conviction that you will exchange it for the product of the effort of others. It is not the moochers or the looters who give value to money. Not an ocean of tears nor all the guns in the world can transform those pieces of paper in your wallet into the bread you will need to survive tomorrow. Those pieces of paper, which should have been gold, are a token of honor – your claim upon the energy of the men who produce. Your wallet is your statement of hope that somewhere in the world around you there are men who will not default on that moral principle which is the root of money. Is this what you consider evil?
“Have you ever looked for the root of production? Take a look at an electric generator and dare tell yourself that it was created by the muscular effort of unthinking brutes. Try to grow a seed of wheat without the knowledge left to you by men who had to discover it for the first time. Try to obtain your food by means of nothing but physical motions – and you’ll learn that man’s mind is the root of all the goods produced and of all the wealth that has ever existed on earth.
“But you say that money is made by the strong at the expense of the weak? What strength do you mean? It is not the strength of guns or muscles. Wealth is the product of man’s capacity to think. Then is money made by the man who invents a motor at the expense of those who did not invent it? Is money made by the intelligent at the expense of the fools? By the able at the expense of the incompetent? By the ambitious at the expense of the lazy? Money is made – before it can be looted or mooched – made by the effort of every honest man, each to the extent of his ability. An honest man is one who knows that he can’t consume more than he has produced.
“To trade by means of money is the code of the men of good will. Money rests on the axiom that every man is the owner of his mind and his effort. Money allows no power to prescribe the value of your effort except by the voluntary choice of the man who is willing to trade you his effort in return. Money permits you to obtain for your goods and your labor that which they are worth to the men who buy them, but no more. Money permits no deals except those to mutual benefit by the unforced judgment of the traders. Money demands of you the recognition that men must work for their own benefit, not for their own injury, for their gain, not their loss – the recognition that they are not beasts of burden, born to carry the weight of your misery – that you must offer them values, not wounds – that the common bond among men is not the exchange of suffering, but the exchange of goods. Money demands that you sell, not your weakness to men’s stupidity, but your talent to their reason; it demands that you buy, not the shoddiest they offer, but the best your money can find. And when men live by trade – with reason, not force, as their final arbiter – it is the best product that wins, the best performance, then man of best judgment and highest ability – and the degree of a man’s productiveness is the degree of his reward. This is the code of existence whose tool and symbol is money. Is this what you consider evil?
“But money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver. It will give you the means for the satisfaction of your desires, but it will not provide you with desires. Money is the scourge of the men who attempt to reverse the law of causality – the men who seek to replace the mind by seizing the products of the mind.
“Money will not purchase happiness for the man who has no concept of what he wants; money will not give him a code of values, if he’s evaded the knowledge of what to value, and it will not provide him with a purpose, if he’s evaded the choice of what to seek. Money will not buy intelligence for the fool, or admiration for the coward, or respect for the incompetent. The man who attempts to purchase the brains of his superiors to serve him, with his money replacing his judgment, ends up by becoming the victim of his inferiors. The men of intelligence desert him, but the cheats and the frauds come flocking to him, drawn by a law which he has not discovered: that no man may be smaller than his money. Is this the reason why you call it evil?
“Only the man who does not need it, is fit to inherit wealth – the man who would make his own fortune no matter where he started. If an heir is equal to his money, it serves him; if not, it destroys him. But you look on and you cry that money corrupted him. Did it? Or did he corrupt his money? Do not envy a worthless heir; his wealth is not yours and you would have done no better with it. Do not think that it should have been distributed among you; loading the world with fifty parasites instead of one would not bring back the dead virtue which was the fortune. Money is a living power that dies without its root. Money will not serve that mind that cannot match it. Is this the reason why you call it evil?
“Money is your means of survival. The verdict which you pronounce upon the source of your livelihood is the verdict you pronounce upon your life. If the source is corrupt, you have damned your own existence. Did you get your money by fraud? By pandering to men’s vices or men’s stupidity? By catering to fools, in the hope of getting more than your ability deserves? By lowering your standards? By doing work you despise for purchasers you scorn? If so, then your money will not give you a moment’s or a penny’s worth of joy. Then all the things you buy will become, not a tribute to you, but a reproach; not an achievement, but a reminder of shame. Then you’ll scream that money is evil. Evil, because it would not pinch-hit for your self-respect? Evil, because it would not let you enjoy your depravity? Is this the root of your hatred of money?
“Money will always remain an effect and refuse to replace you as the cause. Money is the product of virtue, but it will not give you virtue and it will not redeem your vices. Money will not give you the unearned, neither in matter nor in spirit. Is this the root of your hatred of money?
“Or did you say it’s the love of money that’s the root of all evil? To love a thing is to know and love its nature. To love money is to know and love the fact that money is the creation of the best power within you, and your passkey to trade your effort for the effort of the best among men. It’s the person who would sell his soul for a nickel, who is the loudest in proclaiming his hatred of money – and he has good reason to hate it. The lovers of money are willing to work for it. They know they are able to deserve it.
“Let me give you a tip on a clue to men’s characters: the man who damns money has obtained it dishonorably; the man who respects it has earned it.
“Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper’s bell of an approaching looter. So long as men live together on earth and need means to deal with one another – their only substitute, if they abandon money, is the muzzle of a gun.
“But money demands of you the highest virtues, if you wish to make it or to keep it. Men who have no courage, pride, or self-esteem, men who have no moral sense of their right to their money and are not willing to defend it as they defend their life, men who apologize for being rich – will not remain rich for long. They are the natural bait for the swarms of looters that stay under rocks for centuries, but come crawling out at the first smell of a man who begs to be forgiven for the guilt of owning wealth. They will hasten to relieve him of the guilt – and of his life, as he deserves.
“Then you will see the rise of the double standard – the men who live by force, yet count on those who live by trade to create the value of their looted money – the men who are the hitchhikers of virtue. In a moral society, these are the criminals, and the statutes are written to protect you against them. But when a society establishes criminals-by-right and looters-by-law – men who use force to seize the wealth of disarmed victims – then money becomes its creators’ avenger. Such looters believe it safe to rob defenseless men, once they’ve passed a law to disarm them. But their loot becomes the magnet for other looters, who get it from them as they got it. Then the race goes, not to the ablest at production, but to those most ruthless at brutality. When force is the standard, the murderer wins over the pickpocket. And then that society vanishes, in a spread of ruins and slaughter.
“Do you wish to know whether that day is coming? Watch money. Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion – when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing – when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors – when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you – when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice – you may know that your society is doomed. Money is so noble a medium that it does not compete with guns and it does not make terms with brutality. It will not permit a country to survive as half-property, half-loot.
“Whenever destroyers appear among men, they start by destroying money, for money is men’s protection and the base of a moral existence. Destroyers seize gold and leave to its owners a counterfeit pile of paper. This kills all objective standards and delivers men into the arbitrary power of an arbitrary setter of values. Gold was an objective value, an equivalent of wealth produced. Paper is a mortgage on wealth that does not exist, backed by a gun aimed at those who are expected to produce it. Paper is a check drawn by legal looters upon an account which is not theirs: upon the virtue of the victims. Watch for the day when it becomes, marked: ‘Account overdrawn.’
“When you have made evil the means of survival, do not expect men to remain good. Do not expect them to stay moral and lose their lives for the purpose of becoming the fodder of the immoral. Do not expect them to produce, when production is punished and looting rewarded. Do not ask, ‘Who is destroying the world?’ You are.
“You stand in the midst of the greatest achievements of the greatest productive civilization and you wonder why it’s crumbling around you, while you’re damning its life-blood – money. You look upon money as the savages did before you, and you wonder why the jungle is creeping back to the edge of your cities. Throughout men’s history, money was always seized by looters of one brand or another, but whose method remained the same: to seize wealth by force and to keep the producers bound, demeaned, defamed, deprived of honor. That phrase about the evil of money, which you mouth with such righteous recklessness, comes from a time when wealth was produced by the labor of slaves – slaves who repeated the motions once discovered by somebody’s mind and left unimproved for centuries. So long as production was ruled by force, and wealth was obtained by conquest, there was little to conquer. Yet through all the centuries of stagnation and starvation, men exalted the looters, as aristocrats of the sword, as aristocrats of birth, as aristocrats of the bureau, and despised the producers, as slaves, as traders, as shopkeepers – as industrialists.
“To the glory of mankind, there was, for the first and only time in history, a country of money – and I have no higher, more reverent tribute to pay to America, for this means: a country of reason, justice, freedom, production, achievement. For the first time, man’s mind and money were set free, and there were no fortunes-by-conquest, but only fortunes-by-work, and instead of swordsmen and slaves, there appeared the real maker of wealth, the greatest worker, the highest type of human being – the self-made man – the American industrialist.
“If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose – because it contains all the others – the fact that they were the people who created the phrase ‘to make money’. No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity – to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted, or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. The words ‘to make money’ hold the essence of human morality.
“Yet these were the words for which Americans were denounced by the rotted cultures of the looters’ continents. Now the looters’ credo has brought you to regard your proudest achievements as a hallmark of shame, your prosperity as guilt, your greatest men, the industrialists, as blackguards, and your magnificent factories as the product and property of muscular labor, the labor of whip-driven slaves, like the pyramids of Egypt. The rotter who simpers that he sees no difference between the power of the dollar and the power of the whip, ought to learn the difference on his own hide – as, I think, he will.
“Until and unless you discover that money is the root of all good, you ask for your own destruction. When money ceases to be the tool by which men deal with one another, then men become the tools of men. Blood, whips and guns – or dollars. Take your choice – there is no other – and your time is running out.”

“Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any farther obedience, and are left to the common refuge which God hath provided for all men against force and violence.”

'for a root of all the evils is the love of money'

Britcom (Diary) Sunday, July 19th at 2:22PM EST (link)

Young’s Literal Translation is an extremely literal translation that attempts to preserve the tense and word usage as found in the original Greek and Hebrew writings. I find it very useful in discerning the intended meaning scripture. 1 Timothy 6:10 is translated in Young’s as:

“for a root of all the evils is the love of money, which certain longing for did go astray from the faith, and themselves did pierce through with many sorrows;”

I agree with Gamecock, it is the love of money that makes it evil. Lots of money has been used to do good things.

I just couldn’t bear the though of anyone drowning in a river while trying to make a better life for themselves

He seems to bear this thought very well when it comes to Mary Jo Kopechne, who drowned while trying to make a better life for herself because of his actions and subsequent inaction.

I was struck by the inconguity of Kennedy saying how he couldn’t bear the thought of indirect complicity in Mexican’s drowning trying to cross illegally into the U.S., while managing to go on quite well after being responsible for Mary Jo’s drowning.

But maybe I inadvertently exposed an urban legend. I too haven’t found a source document for that quote, just a handful of unsourced attributions.

Obama always tells you he is lying. He always says what it isnt about.

President Barack Obama on Monday shot back at Republicans who have suggested they can win political ground by opposing his healthcare reform proposals.

“This isn’t about me. This isn’t about politics. This is about a health care system that is breaking America’s families, breaking America’s businesses, and breaking America’s economy,” Obama said on a visit to a Washington hospital.

The president went on the offensive after opposition appeared to be rising among lawmakers unhappy with the massive healthcare reform plan proposed by his administration.
