The congressional staff studying the problem of illegal immigrants obtaining jobs here in this country has devised a plan which would require all American workers to obtain a Worker Identification Card. This would be a biometric card capable of holding pertinent personal information about the worker to make it easier for prospective employers to ascertain whether the individual is legal, or illegal. The present system available to employers has been shown to actually catch only 46% of the illegal aliens trying to obtain employment. This means that 54% fall through the cracks.
Already there is an outcry from individuals and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) that such a plan invades the right to privacy. Perhaps it does, but something has to be done to stem the flow of people entering into this nation illegally and taking jobs from unemployed Americans.
The people of this nation are going to have to start making some very important choices in the way things are done; and, not all of them will be favorable. In addition to serving as a means to identify illegal immigrants and workers, could not a system of biometric cards be used to store other important personal information. Things like the ability to participate in elections, motor vehicle operator licenses, or even a personal medical history that could be accessed in case of an emergency. Another benefit of this type of a system is that criminals could be much more easily identified, just as could those under scrutiny relating to domestic and foreign terrorism.
People are going to have to decide whether they wish to maintain a high degree of personal privacy, or allow methods like this to help weed-out the undesirables. without it, there may be no sure way of preventing illegal aliens from entering into this country, obtaining all the entitlements originally created to benefit Americans, and taking valuable jobs that could help unemployed Americans crawl out from under the recession. Closing our borders completely is not only unreasonable, it’s probably impossible.
Besides, if all these people who object to this and darned near every other idea are so concerned about it all, why haven’t they offered so much as a viable option?

Troubling, but what else can be done?

I’m troubled on Constitutional grounds by this move to a national ID card, called a National Worker card, but I don’t know how else you sort the sheep from the goats.
Maybe just a secured Social Security card?
But it is such a short step from any of this to the ability of a future Federal Stasi stopping people going “Your papers please”, or Sheriff Billy Joe Bob, or any number of people who will justify trampling on the Constitution based on some higher calling wrapped in national security excuses.
Troubling…confused….but don’t have any answers.

LaborUnionReport (Diary) Tuesday, March 9th at 10:51PM EST (link)There are many, many things that the ACLU is wrong on but this one is not one of them..
If America becomes a nation that cannot enforce its laws (which it has become in many respects–especially regarding immigration), why give the government more power over the individual?[...Especially when it's coming from a government that has no respect for the individual already.]
This is a dangerous path to go down for many reasons.

I heard about this earlier today
eastbaylarry (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 1:07AM EST (link)but I still have not yet decided if this is a really BAD idea, or just a lesser of two evils.
On the one hand, SOMETHING needs to be done on the ‘identifying illegal aliens’ front. Besides the jobs issue, (which affects me personally, being out of work for 32 months), we DO need a way to identify foriegn terrorists entering and within this country. An ‘evil’ I might be able to live with if it controlled terrorism.
On the other side, hearing the phrase, “Your papers please” in this country might just convince me that we lost the battle against oppression that the folks here at RedState have fought for so consistantly.
Thanks for the thought food.
2+2=4 dammit!
Argument for amnesty and granting citizenship
southeasttexas (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 8:38AM EST (link)One of the arguments given by those favoring prosecutorial amnesty and immediate citizenship to all people in this nation illegally is that this country was built by immigrants. What they aren’t admitting to is that our ancestors who came to this country seeking a better life did so legally. They entered through designated ports of entry, registered themselves, studied our history and culture, became gainfully employed or started businesses, learned English and became productive members of our society.
And, what else they didn’t do was try to sneak in undetected and bleed out programs creaded and designed for the benefit of true Americans. Those who enter this country illegally are a slap in the face of any American citizen regardless of their ethnic, religious or cultural background or beliefs.

No easy way out ...
southeasttexas (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 8:30AM EST (link)I agree with much that has been said, but also see that something is going to have to be done to stem this tide of people entering into this country illegally. It would be one thing were we able to determine who will become an asset to the nation, and who poses a threat against not only the nation, but the safety and well-being of the people within it. But that isn’t possible when so many are entering into the country by crawling under a fence, swimming or wading across a river, or driving through an unmanned border crossing out in the middle of nowhere. There has to be a way of identifying these people here illegally, but I sure don’t know what it is.
My biggest concern about an American Identification System isn’t so much that it infringes upon my right to privacy as much as it would be something that someone couldn’t find a way to counterfeit. Passports are already being issued, but even they can be bought on the Black Market. Inasmuch as we have the technology to develop the biometric card system, isn’t it also possible that those who would seek to abuse the system for illegal purposes can just as easily find a way to abuse it, copy it, or penetrate it?
Profiling regardless whether racial, religious, ethnic or whatever simply isn’t feasible or viable. We have too many citizens of too many origins and beliefs to ever make it an effective means of identification. And, we already have plenty of subversive organizations and groups in this country who pose threats against the safety and well-being of our citizens.
I think I would worry less about what ol’ “Sheriff Billy Bob” MIGHT do than I would whether some clown just crossed one of our borders with the intent of blowing something up, killing hundreds of Americans, or acting to bring about the demise of this nation as a whole.
And to those who are going to object to whatever system might be created or suggested, I have to ask how they would resolve this matter? I’m not sure anyone will listen, but you never know …..

E Verify would work
Scope (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 9:32AM EST (link)much better, and “catch” more than 46% of illegal immigrants, if the government was serious about the program. They are not. Employers are not required to use the system. The penalties for employers are not enough to encourage them to use the system, or to verify that new hires are legal. The system has no teeth. Many employers, especially in construction and agriculture, want the benefit of employees that work for low wages. It increases their bottom lines.
With the McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill, that had the support of Bush, I believe that both parties want to be the ones to gain more voters for their party. They are not serious about stopping the flow of illegals. The Congress already passed legislation to tackle the problem, unfortunately it was never enforced or funded. Until the will is there to tackle the problem in some serious manner, no ID’s or any other program will be successful.
The idea that “something must be done” is exactly what has eroded the freedom of Americans for a very long time. To just do something, for the sake of doing something, usually has more unintended consequences than accomplishing anything good.
I am totally opposed to a national ID card. I want the government out of my life and freedom, not to give them even more power over me. Do you really believe that the Progressives are proposing the idea because of the illegal issue? And, do you really think that Grahamnesty is supporting the idea because of the job issue? He was all in for McCain’s amnesty plan.
People already have a variety of ID cards
southeasttexas (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 12:26PM EST (link)These all tell a little something about you:
Voter registration cards
Driver licenses
Social Security account cards
High school student ID cards
Credit cards
Political party membership cards
Military ID cards
Library cards
And, if you work within the petro-chemical industry, you probably have to have a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). without it, you aren’t permitted onto any petro-chemical processing facility.
So you see that having to have ID cards really isn’t a new idea; it’s just another instance of being able to determine who you are and/or what you stand for.
http://nationalchat.wordpress.com
Each of those ID's has a singular purpose
Scope (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 1:51PM EST (link)My SS card does not tell anyone that I am a Republican, and whether I am a member of the military etc. The same goes for Drivers Licenses, and every other card you list. Currently, if the Government wants to find something out about me, I am certain they have the means. I refuse to give anyone more info than they need for any reason.
The I9 form you complete when hired for a new job requires you to submit 3 forms of ID, from list A, B, and C. It is not a secret that some can purchase phony ID’s. Those same types of people would also be able to purchase biometric Government ID’s.
Again, beef up the E Verify system, and enforce it. No, even that will not obliterate illegals with fake ID’s, but the success rate would greatly increase. Nothing will ever be 100% successful. Where there is a will, there is a way. Unfortunately, there is no will to put teeth in the already passed legislation, by anyone in either party.
Yeah, I Agree
southeasttexas (Diary) Thursday, March 11th at 5:30PM EST (link)Security will have to be a lot tighter regardless which system they approve before I’ll have much faith in it. we’ve seen too many cyber attacks into supposedly secretive databases and the corruption of government agency websites to treat this lightly.
However, as is with most government-run programs, those who put them into action rarely consider the problems that could become associated with them.

Low wages to illegals aren't as low as you think
southeasttexas (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 12:17PM EST (link)As much as I hate to admit to this, I have a brother-in-law who owns and runs a landscape maintenance business just outside of Houston, TX. Rather than hire workers, he routinely “takes on” several illegal immigrants every day he has large projects to complete. These days routinely run as long as 12 to 16 hours each. At the end of the day, each of the illegals he “took on” gets an average of $350.00. That’s not bad if you take into consideration not a single penny of it is withheld, and no taxes are paid in relationship to it. Heck, that’s more than I make some days!

Entitlements
southeasttexas (Diary) Saturday, April 3rd at 4:16PM EST (link)John F. Kennedy once stated, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country”. Although he probably wasn’t referring to the welfare system and “entitlements”, there isn’t any reason why is shouldn’t be applied. Far too many people have chosen to live their lives “on the dole”, and aren’t making a single effort to improve themselves or their way of life. It has to stop.
Maybe what this country needs are politicians with enough guts to address the problems associated with entitlements. OR, maybe we ought to just terminate the present entitlement system and work toward something that actually encourages people to do better. Unfortunately, I haven’t enough faith in anyone in government to step up to the plate to accomplish any of this, and wouldn’t be surprised if the ACLU found cause to sue if someone were denied lifelong benefits at the expense of those of us what have to pick up the tab for their laziness.

The Fact is ....
southeasttexas (Diary) Saturday, April 3rd at 4:26PM EST (link)… if the government would step up to the plate and do what they have to in order to bring a stop to the tide of illegal immigrants coming into this country, and make those already here go home. But that will never happen because, first off, too many of our elected officials employ illegal immigrants for household tasks and aren’t about to give up on the cheap labor. Secondly, the best example of our officials succumbing to the wills of the lobbyists working on behalf of the illegal immigrants to bring them amnesty and instant citizenship is their apparent inability and unwillingness to lawfully designate English as the “official” language of America! It may only be a small accomplishment for our nation, but be assured it would satisfy the needs of many true Americans who are sick and tired of a gutless administration.
