Reid to America: My backroom deal can’t be perfected

Harry brings the plantation to the Senate

The Senate has been called the world’s greatest deliberative body. Not today. You see, Harry Reid cut a deal with the Democrats. Then he introduced that deal as a substitute to the bill. And then he “filled the tree”. That’s a short-hand to describe a parliamentary manuever by which no amendments are allowed to the action currently on the floor. The Majority Leader can always do this because of some quirks of Senate procedure.

That’s right. No amendments. No changes. No improvements, even minor ones. No Republican ideas. Why?

Either it is perfect? Or it would fall apart on the slightest tweak.

That sounds like running the Senate like a plantation. And when you consider that this is how he is trying to get a massive government over-reach into our economy, it puts a new twist to the Hayek’s title “Road to Serfdom.”

And this the week I get the news my kid's going back on active duty!

Achance (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 5:48PM EST (link)

Can’t say I’m happy about him having to pick up a gun for this government again. Frankly, I’m closer to wanting to pick up one against the government than to having one of mine carry one for it. I always thought that if one day I found a practicing communist as President of the United States, I’d be standing or lying in the rubble and dying of radiation poisoning.

I’m not a gun guy, don’t even own one in fact. But I’m about ready to grab one and stand beside you.

I”m still proud to have those like your son standing up for me. Even if we have a commie POTUS, there are still hundreds of millions of us that I’m proud to have him defend.

Buy one, or more, while you still can.

Achance (Diary) Sunday, December 20th at 12:44PM EST (link)

I had the misfortune of being SWMBO’s beast of burden yesterday while she “shopped.” I slipped my leash for a little while and went to the sporting goods section; couldn’t believe how much gun prices have gone up in just the last year! I’d kinda been thinking that I wanted a 30-something caliber bolt action rifle. Haven’t had one since I left Anchorage because there isn’t any large game here other than bear. I don’t hunt things I won’t eat, so I don’t hunt bear and if you are arming yourself for defense against bears, a 12 guage is better. Anyway, I was looking at Ruger M-77s, good, stout, honest bolt actions with no fancy stuff and they were over $700; I think the last one I owned might have cost me $200. Comrade Obama is the best thing that has ever happened to gun sales and the prices reflect it.

Oh, and stock up on ammunition. When you can even find popular calibers, the prices are exorbitant. Soon as we get CommieCare, the SecDHHS will issue a finding that ammo is a public health hazard and take steps to regulate its sale and use. Better have lots stored up for that and get handy at reloading.

Forget about ever having senate republicans change this thing on their own once they regain power..it’s not going to happen…unless….

Unless citizens start their own organized revolt of the healthcare bill. While the options are slim, there are options. Example, while the healthcare bill has a mandate that forces all Americans to purchase insurance or face a fine, what do you think would happen if millions and millions of citizens ignored the mandate to purchase insurance AS WELL as ignoring paying the fine? I’m not advocating such a scenario, but if millions and millions of Americans followed these actions, the feds would have no choice but to eliminate the mandate. And once the mandate is gone, ObamaCare collapses under it’s own weight.

That plan worked before...

… with a similar bunch in charge of “government:”

In Poland, under the Soviet boot, citizens were not allowed to fly their nation’s flag unless the Hammer & Cycle flew alongside. The Poles knew that the law could only be enforced if small numbers of individuals thumbed their noses at it, but that if everyone unfurled their flag, without the hated H & C, that the Soviets couldn’t arrest everyone. Solidarity. It worked.

Senator Kennedy replacement Unconstitutional? A number of us up here in mass think it is. The last part of Mass Republican Party V. Deval Patrick, Thomas E. Connolly Justice of the Superior Court wrote, “Although there are other potential reasons – this court finds the two discussed above sufficient for the denial.” And the Mass Republican Party rolls over and plays dead again. From what I have gathered, the “other potential reasons” not submitted are…

“Of part of the fist art.23, No subsidy, charge, tax, impost, or duties, ought to be established, fixed, laid, or levied, under any pretext whatsoever, without the consent of the people or their representatives in the legislature. No continues effusive representative preexisted for the reason of illness, not necessary for the [immediate] preservation of the public peace, health, safety or convenience, therein the merit of immediate disorder is negated. Thus the consent of the people must be upheld, that all the inhabitants of this commonwealth, having such qualifications, have an equal right to elect representatives, of the fist art. 9, thus consent of the people as paramount and no other.”

“440 Mass. 309 In broad terms, it is the Legislature’s power to enact rules to regulate conduct, to the extent that such laws are “necessary to secure the health, safety, good order, comfort, or general welfare of the community” (citations omitted). Opinion of the Justices, 341 Mass. 760 , 785 (1960). [Note 12] See Commonwealth v. Alger, 7 Cush. 53 , 85 (1851).”

“So stated as evident, one person’s last wish, that of late Senator Kennedy that his seat be immediately and prejudicially filled. Consequently so enacted by Deval Patrick. Further that one partisan group also enacted to obtain advantages, or particular and exclusive privileges. Thereof, Part of the fist article 7.”

“At present are the largest ever federal tax increases and entitlement under debate in the U.S. Senate with a partisan majority rule at risk. 417 Mass. 406 In the first place, art. 7 speaks essentially to a right of the people to institute and change government…”

CA No. 209-4078 failed to make safe and secure the health, safety, good order, comfort, or general welfare of the community.”

conservativemusician Sunday, December 20th at 12:08AM EST (link)

In both chambers, with the hopes that this will endear them to their constituents. Even if 9 Dems vote no, it will still pass. Likewise in the House, if 39 vote no, it will pass. Again, they are banking on their constituents not seeing through the ruse of getting this to conference, and then some voting against it to save their hides. This works on their side, but the GOP has a history of holding our side to account for their stupid votes…2008 as the latest example.

Just saw on Fox tonight that SEIU will pressure the Dems against it, just like all the other fringe left kook groups, but in the end, they will be bought off just like Nelson was and reminded that this is just the first step to total government control.

They are so close now, so there is no way (outside of a miracle from God Himself) that the Dems are going to let this opportunity pass, even if it means losing their majorities for a couple of election cycles. They are looking long-term and know that even if the pendulum swings against them next year, they will eventually get power back and finish the job they started this year. This is why they don’t care what the public thinks and why they will continue to thumb their collective noses at us.

Harry finds the sweet price for having his way with Ben. And we gave Tiger grief.

archer52 Saturday, December 19th at 7:34PM EST (link)

Harry Reid finds Nelson’s price. This reminds me of a joke I heard once…
Posted December 19th, 2009 by admin
———————
First Mary in Louisiana, then Bernie in Vermont, now Ben “I have my principles” Nelson. It is said that everybody has their price, and I guess the men and women in Congress are no exception. Kind of like Tiger’s women, some a little more expensive, some on the cheap, even his wife signed up for 20 million for ten years (sounds like a professional athlete contract doesn’t it?) But we hoped for better. They all know this bill is a monster that will destroy their nation, but they will still vote the party line, for a price. As Mary puts it, (I won’t call her Senator any longer, when I worked the street I didn’t call the street walkers by their last name either.) it was three hundred million not one hundred- so there!

Years ago I heard a joke that puts all of this in perspective. As I was working in my shop, I remembered it and though it was worth sharing. Here goes:

“Once there was a man who was rather crude but direct. One of his co-workers was a haughty-taughty female who found him somewhat repulsive. During one of their constant sharp tongued back and forths the man asks her a question. “Look, be honest. Would you sleep with me for a million dollars?” The woman paused, sizing the man up and down, thinking about her response. Finally she said, “For a million dollars, I would.” The man looks at her. “Would you sleep with me for twenty dollars?” The woman threw her head back and smirked. “Of course not, what do you think I am, a whore?” At which the man said coolly, “We have already established that. What we are doing is haggling over the price.”

If someone had asked me if I would witness a time where not only are the politicians we elected to protect us being bought off so easily, but that the same politicians would do it in the open with an arrogant disregard for us, I would have laughed out loud and said, “At least they would have the common sense to do it where we couldn’t see it. They can’t be suicidal!”

Boy was I wrong.

As Rush put it, once the bureaucracy is established, you can never go back. It will be a nickel and dime and a trillion dollars method from now on, every year we’ll get something else added or taken away until it gets to nationalized healthcare and all that it brings.

Even if the Republicans take over all parts of the government in 2012 it will have had three years of tax collecting and agencies established. It would take a miracle to kill it. Especially with the media playing it up. The Republicans will play the moderate game and make some changes, but not kill it out altogether. Look at history- Education, SS, Medicare, EPA, etc.

Once in, it will always be in. God help us all. I hope the Chinese cut us off. Imagine, a foreign country has to do intervention to stop the addicts in D.C.

There Is No Parallel Here - Those Programs Were Popular; This One Isn't

IJB Saturday, December 19th at 11:08PM EST (link)

If the GOP is smart, they will run *specifically* on repealing this. If they get elected on that platform, they’ll have a mandate to repeal it.

There is no comparison between those previous programs, all of which were roundly popular, and ObamaCare which is despised by over 40% of the country, and at least disliked by something approaching 60%.

Also, there’s nothing easier than cutting and repealing taxes – doing that alone would kill the funding for this, and would effectively kill it.

And, if I understand it correctly, they said the world cannot afford the debt the US is getting into, particularly with the healthcare bill. Yes China is going to lighten up on US treasuries, they would be crazy not to. And of coarse with Obama jacking Wen up in Copenhagen… I don’t see that as a great help. ( My God, what an idiot…)
I don’t know how the money game has survived this long, so hard to tell how much more they can keep playing before it piles up completely. Maybe we are getting to the end of the trail now.

Found it.

The deal with Nelson...

harlan Saturday, December 19th at 8:41PM EST (link)

…has to be unconstitutional.

One state getting preferential treatment over all the others, with no better reason than bribery to buy a vote?

Nelson is a whore. Reid and obama and co. are no better than an organized crime family trafficking in prostitution.

This . will . not . stand.

You are being very insulting to Prosititues everywhere...

as I understand it, Nelson got an exemption form the taxes on non-profit insurance companies…if they are domiciled in Nebraska. Wonder how New York, Connecticut Florida (hear that Bill Nelson) and the rest are going to take they when they figure out that a lot of companies will set up shop as non-profits to avoid the tax and to be more “acceptable” the communists.

By the way, how stupid is Bill Nelson? Sure he got some cover by the exemption for Florida Medicare Advantage recipients, but a third rate socialist (Sanders) and a farmer got the best of him in “Let’s Make A Deal”.

I guess we should be happy, they have given us the seeds to sow for the destruction of the bill. Pitting states against one another can cut both ways boys.

Haven't you wondered why Bernie Sanders

joayn (Diary) Sunday, December 20th at 1:23AM EST (link)

has been so quiet? The payoffs are: Vermont, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania and Louisiana are mentioned. I’m sure Neveda got some bucks. But Vermont got the most so far: $10 billion. Just the tip of the iceberg, I’m sure.

“You’ll find a number of states that are treated differently than other states. That’s what legislating is all about. It’s compromise,” he said. (Harry Reid) Well, prositution’s legal in Neveda so I guess it’s no big deal to the Reidmeister.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1209/30815.html

Then, the Hill reports that the CBO scored the bill at $871 billion, with the defict reduced (hah) by $132 billion during the 10-year budget period. Now, mind you, this information was given to the Hill by Reid’s office, not the actual letter from the CBO. The $871 billion is for the expansions of insurance coverage only.

Via HotAir, the total cost for the 10-year period is actually $2.5 trillion.

Maybe you all can help, but didn’t Joe leave D.C. after Franken smacked him? Last I heard, he didn’t like the deal very much. Maybe he’s thinking of retiring and will kill this thing off. We’ll see what kind of friend to Graham and McCain, and us, he really is.

He doesn't even have to vote "No." I'd be satisfied with "Present" - n/t

The light bulb went on...

anotherindyfilmguy (Diary) Saturday, December 19th at 10:35PM EST (link)

If I recall correctly the bulk of the “stimulus” will go into effect during the 2012 election cycle. Net effect being that any uptick in the economy can be claimed as “from the stimulus” and if that doesn’t work at least the money goes to payoff political pals of incumbents all over the country.

The Dems in charge probably consider that, and the bribes being paid out for reluctant votes for the destruction of the health care system, a nice cushion against backlash. They probably also want to get it over so fast not just because they don’t want anyone to put a spotlight on the guts of it but to also give it the maximum time to be forgotten until the “benefits” kick in on the next election cycle after the next one (2014) so that it also helps them out.

To the PTB of those in charge it’s a plus-plus, two major election cycles coming in which they either rebuy their elections and/or can say to everyone how much they “helped everyone”.

In my opinion the law of unintended consequences is going to bite the US in the ass over this if it finally gets through everything and passes in any form. We really did have a chance to avoid another great depression. Instead of providing tax relief and regulatory relief we see more taxes coming, socialization of (ultimately the destruction of) 1/6th of the economy and more debt meaning the dollar value is going to drop like a rock at some point. It can still be avoided but, given human history in general I somehow suspect that no matter what we’ll end up going the hardest road possible.

already tried that with Nelson, and we know how that turned out. Better route will be for the states to do what Arizona tried to do in 2008 with Prop. 101 and what Missouri is trying now- and that is to protect their own state from having to participate in nationalized healthcare.

I was watching a Star Trek: Voyager episode today ( 20 + Inches of snow fell) The episode was titled Critical Care, where some planet is rationing medical care and its way out of hand and the Doctor gets even!

You have to see this, it would be great to show to to people who dont get that once this thing passes, here comes rationing.

The Plot:
The Doctor is stolen from Voyager by an alien who sells him and his mobile emitter to a hospital on densely-populated planet. He is activated in a cramped room filled with sick people and is made to treat them using only very basic equipment. When the administrators of the facility realize how skilled the Doctor is, they move him to another area of the hospital to treat more deserving patients. The Doctor is appalled to learn that the medical care that people are given is linked to their status in society and hatches a plan to make things a little less discriminatory”

How many governors are asking their Senators to get the same deal?

nessa (Diary) Sunday, December 20th at 12:46AM EST (link)

that would put a knot in Harry’s panties. Every Dem Senator needs to say No till they get the same deal. Hell Republicans could offer to vote yes if they can get the same deal, hopefully most, well, some of the republicans would go to the press with it and NOT take the bribe. Ahh, never mind, that “NOT take the bribe” phrase ruined it.

How can 59 Senators allow Nelson of Nebraska require all the other states pay for medical bills? Seems to me there should be at least 20 Senators vote against this bill. What is wrong with with those guys. Has all of them gone crazy?

Is Webb for sure on cloture?

earlgrey (Diary) Sunday, December 20th at 11:01AM EST (link)

I know everyone says that he is a party man, but he voted a lot with the republicans on health care amendments.

Any possibility (however remote) that there might be a party switch. Surely these moderate democrats ought to know that they will have to keep voting increasingly liberal and progressive to keep their jobs/positions in the democrat party.

Particularly amusing is that the pro-abortion

caucus in the house is calling Nelson’s deal on abortion unconstitutional! That’s just hilarious. Oh, so now they discover the constitution. Well, they’re version of it, anyway.

Politico has a lengthy article this morning about the machinations behind Nelson’s deal.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1209/30816.html

I have already sent an e-mail to Julie Schmit-Albin regarding her group’s (Nebraska Right To Life) backing of Ben Nelson in his last election. I strongly urge all pro-lifers posting here to do the same.

I think Julie deserves a big shout-out of thanks, don’t you? Especially from those of us in states who will opt-in on abortion.

They should have to attend an abortion in order to become a card carrying member of the Pro-Abortion caucus. Otherwise STFU and don’t wave the Constitution in our faces. We know what it says.
Much more than I could ever say about the pro-abortion feces.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Just like the Louisiana Purchase, no where in the Nelson payoff is the word "Nebraska" mentioned.

I was sitting here wondering if the word “Nebraska” was used in Reid’s amendment. It’s not.

Reagan Airport Closed

proudgop (Diary) Sunday, December 20th at 1:17PM EST (link)

Reagan National Airport will not have any flights before noon, possibly later than that, an airport spokeswoman said.

Crews are simply having trouble finding places to move all the snow that fell, said Tara Hamilton, a spokeswoman for Metro Washington Airports Authority. She said though the runway is clear, the taxi ways are not, making plane maneuvering impossible.

Hamilton said officials are hoping to have the runway cleared by noon, but it was not immediately clear whether they could. She said snow was being moved to parking lots or anywhere available on airport property.
