yes, this is good news indeed, and while he won’t show it on TV, it has James Carville and the rest of his crew shaking in their boots. Two Republican seats in the region of Virginia which is responsible for allowing commentators to call it a ‘Purple trending Blue State’ instead of a Red state is a truly stunning upset, regardless of the turnout for the vote.

When the Republicans win the Virginia Governorship in 2009, the Democrats will point out (just as the Republicans did in 2005) that the party of the President has always lost the race for Virginia Governorship since 1977. (Last VA Gov to be elected with his party in the White House was Miles E. Godwin in 1973 and he was also Governor as a Democrat in from 1966-1970)

New Jersey, OTOH, will be *considerably* harder to spin if the Democrats lose.

I’m all for cheering on Republican victories on all levels – local, state, and federal – but to spin this as a loss for Obama and the DNC is positively silly. Maybe it would have been if Obama campaigned for the local Dem or if the DNC poured money into this local race, but that didn’t happen. Do we really think the President or the DNC really care about two seats on a local city council?

I got an excuse for blogging that time of the night, first, I’m retired so the time of day or night doesn’t mean much to me, and second it was only quarter till two in Alaska, don’t know what time it was wherever he was. As for the “good posters here at RS”, they’re busy referring to Colin Powell as a “scumbag arse” and calling a Supreme Court Justice a child molester, so spare me the high horse about etiquette.

The original post is still there, so tell me how a LOCAL election in the 173rd largest “city” in the US worries the Dem NATIONAL Committee or President Obama. I submit it doesn’t, and that the “good posters” here are blindly grasping for any bit of good news.

Yes, I heard about the polls, with McDonnell leading any of the three Dems by double digits. As you say, it’s a long way out, but, I really believe he can only improve as Obama, the Libeals and King Kaine go further down in their popularity, as seen in the purpose of this diary.

According to the polling data posted at Wikipedia, McDonnell has a lead on any of hid Democrat opponents.

Still, I’d be happier if he (McDonnell) broke 50, but we’re still a long way out.
