The Fairness Doctrine fight is not over

Adam Theirer, a scholar at the Progress and Freedom Foundation, notes that the Fairness Doctrine was part of a regulatory paradigm being pushed by the left and, in particular, the group Free Press. This fight is not over. Adam’s piece is worth reading:

Of course, the radicals at the (Un)Free Press weren’t about to let one of the Left’s old favorite regulations go so away without asking for something in return.  One of the reasons that Silver and Ammori are suddenly willing to give their blessing to the Doctrine’s burial is because they want to get on with the more far-reaching agenda of micro-managing media markets using a variety of less visible regulations.

Indeed, in their paper, Silver and Ammori go to great pains to try to show that the Fairness Doctrine supposedly has nothing to do with all the other regulations that they want Congress and the FCC to continue to enforce, or even expand.  These goals include media ownership restrictions, diversity mandates, local programming regulation, and so on.  Recognizing that the Fairness Doctrine was not only ineffective but also a useful tool for many on the political Right to whip their base into action, the Free Press moved to preemptively divorce their other pet projects from the Fairness Doctrine.

It’s a brilliant tactical move by Free Press; lull Limbaugh and other conservatives into a deep sleep by throwing them the bone of a Fairness Doctrine win, and then push a far more radical regulatory agenda through the back-door once they’ve stopped paying attention.  Of course, these things cannot be as easily divorced as the Free Press radicals want us to believe.  The Fairness Doctrine was just one part of a much grander regulatory paradigm that so-called progressives have pushed for under the banner of “public interest regulation.”

They are incorrect in saying they have lulled Mr. Limbaugh

Rush has said and it’s been on his website that this vote meant nothing. It’s been well publicized that Obama has other plans in this area. Additionally, Obama favors executive orders and could use that avenue.

This was a tactical maneuver by the dems...

The headline :”Senate Passes Fairness Doctrine Ban” did its intended work. It may not have lulled Rush, but I’m sure it sunk in with the majority of people who get their news from soundbites. Any amendment put forth by Durbin should be seen for what it was- paving the way for talk radio restrictions through intimidation of current owners and management.

Welcome to more of fascism in America.

Does Lib talk radio get "talking points"

nextlevel Monday, March 2nd at 10:17PM EST (link)

Now I KNOW that I’m in the minority on this one but….I see that Rush Limbaugh pointed out, in some detail, that the RNC sends talk radio heads the GOP “talking points” on a regular basis…He also states that many elected Republicans send out announcements and press releases, hoping to get a shout-out from Limbaugh……Now HERE’S where this “fairness” thing get’s a little bit, uh, murky….. During the Presidential campaign, the BANKING LOBBYISTS put out talking points on the “Wall street crisis”. These were adopted by the GOP. Nothing wrong there. These “talking points” were (LITERALLY) picked up and perpetrated by every “Economist-come-lately” on Conservative talk radio! The PROBLEM is that talking points were “politically” smart but they could CERTAINLY be questioned. They offered a “too simple” explanation, for a “too complex” problem: How did we get into the Financial Crisis?…Moreover, I reject that these talking points adhered to Conservative principals… Here’s the message that I refer to: “The Government caused the financial crisis by forcing banks to make risky loans to minorities and poor people, with the intent to increase home ownership.”…..Now I KNOW that Laura and Rush and Sean (and McConnell, Rove, and ANYONE on the WSJ editorial board) voiced this as “fact” but I’d like to point out that these folks don’t earn a living from Wall Street. The Financial Crisis happened for a LOT of reasons (government intervention INCLUDED) but the SPAN and SCOPE of the problem was manifested because “…Are the cameras turned off?..OK, What happened here is that Wall street got drunk and we have to pick up the tab” (George W. Bush)….ANYONE who understands Wall Street (but is not concerned with “spinning” the banks message) can tell you that BearSterns, Merrill Lynch, and Lehman Brothers did not take their intestment/securitization/bundling QUEUE from Fannie/Freddie, Congress and any other entity. There are no “altruistic” motives for the former Investment Banking Model of the US (the “motive” is: cha-ching!)…Wall Street relaxed underwriting to secure more loans, to BUNDLE more financial instruments and to SELL those to Institutional Investors!…. Beside that fact, the talking point goes into overdrive to tie our current crisis BACK to the Community Reinvestment Act (circa 1977!)…Whatever you choose to believe about the Financial Crisis; the IDEA of tying today’s MESS back to a Law signed 30 years ago, would be the equivalent of the oft used LIBERAL crutch of tying an individual’s choice to commit a crime, back to their deprived childhood. It’s a dotted-line, REACH!…The bottom line is that I’m for the Gov’t staying OUT of free speech on talk radio. I’m also for “talk radio” not receiving talking points from a Political Party…If Limbaugh ASKED for talking points, that’s fine…If he receives them, unsolicited; then why are our political parties engaging in that?…Let’s not PROVE that “talk radio” is the unfunded “mouthpiece” of the Republican Party. People BELIEVE talk radio hosts…Even in areas where they’re cluelessly taking queues from an industry promoting it’s own self-preservation by turning the “little people” against each other.

Rush (and the rest of us) have not been fooled

Yeah, it’s good of Adam Theirer to keep shining the spotlight on this ever-shifting ground of the Unfairness Doctrine fight.

But he’s kidding himself with this part:

It’s a brilliant tactical move by Free Press; lull Limbaugh and other conservatives into a deep sleep by throwing them the bone of a Fairness Doctrine win, and then push a far more radical regulatory agenda through the back-door once they’ve stopped paying attention.

Rush (and RedState, and National Review, and Townhall, and Hannity, and Ingraham, and pretty much everybody else I can think of) are WELL AWARE of the sham nature of this 87-11 vote, and the left’s clumsy sleight of hand.

Everybody and their dog is aware of what the the lefties are doing. And it ain’t even *clever*, much less *brilliant*. It’s just garden-variety dirty shuck-and-jive straight out of the lefty playbook.

We’re all over it, but by all means keep it in the forefront. I would just say to Adam – hey, don’t mistake craven, slimy, and terminally dishonest for brilliant.
