Obama wants to reshape the agriculture industry

It's not just the coal industry he has it in for

Below, Moe writes on some shocking statements by Barack Obama about “bankrupting the coal industry” in order to address global warming.

Obama has it in for another industry: agriculture. Check out these statements from an interview he gave with Time’s Joe Klein:

As a consequence, our agriculture sector actually is contributing more greenhouse gases than our transportation sector. And in the mean time, it’s creating monocultures that are vulnerable to national security threats, are now vulnerable to sky-high food prices or crashes in food prices, huge swings in commodity prices, and are partly responsible for the explosion in our healthcare costs because they’re contributing to type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease, obesity, all the things that are driving our huge explosion in healthcare costs. That’s just one sector of the economy.

He is blaming our agriculture policy for global warming, obesity, stroke, heart disease, etc.

If he is willing to “bankrupt” the coal industry over global warming, what’s he going to do to the agriculture sector which “actually is contributing more greenhouse gases than our transportation sector”?

Hypothetical

If what Obama claims is true, then would you agree or disagree that a reshaping of the agricultural industry is warranted in the best interests of the nation?

I've been saying this for years....

Not about Obama, of course, but about the eco nazis. My husband and I work in the ag sector and we have seen legislation proposed that would – is intended to – kill off ‘factory’ farms. An example would be laws pertaining to manure mgmt and clean air THAT ARE ALREADY REGULATED but would be so onerous that the fines would bankrupt these people (think Hormel, Purdue, etc.). When they finally need help, Obama will bail them out – by taking them over. That will include all their land.

Keep you eyes on water. That will be a resource that Obama would have to nationalize/ration in order to control ag completely.

No I am not paranoid and I am not a conspiracy nut. I’ve been watching this come down for years.

gas

Michael DeWeese (Diary) Sunday, November 2nd at 7:04PM EST (link)

Cow farts contribute methane gas to the atmosphere that has more of an effect on greenhouse effect than all the emissions of fossil fuel engines.

All cow farms will need to place gas emissions cleaner devices on all cows.

Okay...

aardpig Sunday, November 2nd at 7:29PM EST (link)

…but what about the obesity epidemic, possibly linked to use of high-fructose corn syrup? What about eutrophication, caused by fertilizer run-off? What about water management in the Western parts of the US?

Just because we are unwilling or unable to deal with the methane issue, does not make the other problems vanish into thin air.

The Ag industry does need some major reforming (what doesn’t?), but Obama’s not the one to do it. His policies will only make it worse.

Shutting down middle America

Palinpal Sunday, November 2nd at 8:06PM EST (link)

Obama seems determined to halt economic growth in middle America by restricting basic farming practices – probably so that he can legitimize the government takeover of them!

Elitist liberals bent on destroying the backbone of American production don’t seem to realize that millions of Americans aren’t on board with leftist, arrogant illuminati politicians.

I cant invent everything

Michael DeWeese (Diary) Sunday, November 2nd at 8:12PM EST (link)

I solved the methane problem with a cow fart cleaner. Someone else has to do the other stuff. Maybe Obama has a super secret think tank that has the solutions and patents already and he is just waiting to get elected and enact regulations requireing the use of the inventions to enrich his ‘green’ buddies.

I predict more Chinese imports.

Menlo (Diary) Sunday, November 2nd at 8:17PM EST (link)

If Obama gets his way, the agricultural industry will be outsourced to China where there are zero regulations, and they will do FAR more real, proven, direct, and widespread damage to both the environment and the health and safety of all Americans.

..to reduce the U.S. population

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Will?

As for obesity, actions have consequences

GregInFla (Diary) Sunday, November 2nd at 8:49PM EST (link)

People are free to make decisions. Personal responsibility is what is missing. Actions have consequences, and we cannot take control of people’s lives. However, if government takes control of healthcare, you just might get your wish. In the early 1900s, many states passed eugenic laws that allowed the forced sterilization of those U.S. citizens that the government felt should not be allowed to reproduce, mostly the idiots, imbeciles and criminals. Only one conservative SCOTUS justice dissented in when the court upheld these laws. And the dissenter was not the revered Oliver Wendell Holmes, who was most in favor of these laws.

Education, not government intrusion, is the best tool to help people make better decisions. When people learn that their actions will have consequences, and that those consequences will not be desirable, personal choices will improve. Look at the drop in tobacco use for an example.

Now, if you really want a government that intrudes into people’s lives, and believes it knows what is best for the citizen better than the citizen himself, I suggest that you move to such a country (Venezuela and Cuba come to mind), because that is not the Amercican way of life.

To give one counter example...

aardpig Sunday, November 2nd at 9:23PM EST (link)

…to your argument, let’s look at tobacco usage. I would argue that drops in usage are due more to regulation (in particular, warning signs on packets, banning of advertising, etc) than to classroom education.

Certainly, there is a thin line between a state looking out for its populace, and a nanny state making all decisions in the ‘best interests’ of its populace. However, to stray to far in the opposite direction is can be equally problematic. That’s why, for instance, the government doesn’t legalize meth.

I'm well aware

Menlo (Diary) Sunday, November 2nd at 9:43PM EST (link)

A lot of the food on the shelves does contain Chinese-made ingredients. It’s very scary, but there is often no choice. It’s ironically part of the problem I have with no government regulation of business and trade. It’s just that the Democrats’ version of “regulation” not only does nothing to resolve any problems but usually makes them worse.

I’ve said before that if I had my way, I would ban the import of ANY products from China for sale or distribution in the US. Violators would spend a minimum of ten years in federal prison. At the very least, I would demand giant scary-looking warning labels on any Chinese-made products. It is a matter of national security that I believe endangers America more than the threat of Islamic terrorism.

Of course, Obama’s got a half brother in China who works at a plant exporting some of their garbage.

Tobacco use has been removed from the culture

GregInFla (Diary) Sunday, November 2nd at 10:19PM EST (link)

Through education of the harm done by frequent tobacco use, its usage has declined. And don’t limit “education” to just the classroom. this involves parental education as well. We cannot leave all education to the government.

It is no longer cool to smoke in many circles, like it used to be. Our culture influences the behavior of the people, starting with the youth. They have seen the affects in their older family members, and see that indeed, frequent tobacco use is harmful to their bodies. But we need to be vigilant. My teen son tells me that kids with parents who don’t smoke are more likely to smoke, because they have not seen the effects. Continued education in this area would be advisable, maybe substituting it for the radicalism classes in Ayers’ curriculum.

And, I doubt that any smokers read the warnings, and learn something they have not already heard. “Wow, pregnant women should not smoke. Must be because the baby is not old enough.”

Not really

Menlo (Diary) Sunday, November 2nd at 11:19PM EST (link)

First of all, I think the idea that only liberals shop at Whole Foods is nonsense. In my solidly conservative Republican area, they have done quite well for 14 years now. I would guess most shoppers, like myself, have concerns about their own health and what they eat rather than the environmental impact. Or perhaps that’s the only place that carries that unique product or treat we like. And some people have allegies or intolerances leaving them with few alternatives.

Second, their prices are actually about the same as those of other stores, assuming it’s the same product. Where I live, all the stores have “organic” or specialty sections now, and many of the same things are generally now available in any supermarket, so I know that from experience. Whole Foods even has Haagen-Dazs cheaper. They have lots of competition here.

Alas, there is no Trader Joe’s where I live, but I understand they are more affordable, and they have done something about some Chinese imports.

At any rate, it should not be a government question. As long as it is legal, it should be ignored (as a morality or legal question).

Now from what I understand from your statements, you may question my statements…so, if so, feel free to comment…

Factory Farms

mathteacher Sunday, November 2nd at 11:28PM EST (link)
There are many good & important reasons to bring change to the monolithic agricultural industry that has developed in the U.S. Obama listed many of them. If you've been paying attention you have to know change is happening. The organic sector of the food industry is the most rapidly growing for good reason. People don't want to feed their children, their pets, or themselves, poisons. People who grow & harvest our food should not be exposed to poisons either.
People know they can no longer trust our food supply. How many more e-coli & listeria cases will it take? Melamine from China was in our pet food & perhaps in our people food as well. Contaminated animal feed spreads mad cow disease & who knows what else. Lack of regulation, a hallmark of the Bush administration, has under-mined the entire industry.

Spending money to transport our food thousands of miles when it can be grown locally makes little sense. If we don’t have to worry about how well produce ships we can grow fruits & veggies that taste better & often have higher nutritive value. The number of Farmers’ Markets & CSA Farms is increasing each year. These diverse farms are the opposite of the subsidized & polluting factory farms.
Finally, how can we continue our inhumane practices- abusing sentient creatures to maximize profit ? Change is already upon us. Get on the band wagon. It’s good for all of God’s creatures.

Not being realistic

JakePrime (Diary) Monday, November 3rd at 12:45AM EST (link)

I understand the appeal of local produce and organic foods. I’m a big patron. Still, if we want food to be produced in large quantities we cannot abandon large-scale industrial farming. We can’t completely embrace local farming as well. You just can’t grow everything that you want everywhere. If you want bananas and you live in NY, they must be shipped. There is no way around it. I do agree about the subsidies. Those should have been dumped long ago.

We also need to pay more attention to our own food supply as seen through our recent contamination issues. That being said, these issues have been handled quickly, with minimal damage. There’s no way you could 100% guarantee the safety of the food supply. There will always be a small chance of contamination. Food shipped from China needs better inspections and that means more regulation, but banning Chinese imports as suggested above is beyond stupid.

Math teacher – The locally produced idea is fine for some seasonal veggies but that is about as far as it goes . Otherwise there is going to be lots of hungry urban folk most of the year… .
Out sourcing to China ?? That is an ALgore talking point . LOL Problem is that idiot wasn’t kidding .
Fact- The US has the safest most cost effective food production system on the planet !! Bar NONE. No one else is even close. Production agriculture –
food production is highly specialized, capital intensive and it ain’t Green Acres if you get my point.
To restate my first point – The Soviets, Cubans and the North Koreans centrally command ag. production which is EXACTLY where Obama and the Eco-Socialists want to take the US. How well did or do those folks EAT ??

The reason we have moved to high fructose corn syrup is because of those ignorant democrats in the Senate that you presumably support. Their protectionist tariffs on imported sugar has caused manufacturers to quit using sugar and start using high fructose corn syrup.

And the reason we have an obesity epidemic is twinkies, oreos, and instant food. Not farm produced products.

This is the second time you’ve attacked one of my posts with wild accusations and misunderstandings, so I have to wonder about your condition when posting.

My premise is that people need to take personal responsibility for their actions. If you eat wrong, you’ll get obese, and don’t look for too much sympathy from the masses. We cannot criminalize this, but we cannot reward it either by making it a “disability”. People will then learn of the consequences (education) and change their behavior. If society simply pays for gastric surgeries, then the actions (eating too much) will not have consequences. If you get obese and get diabetes, oh well. You want to shoot yourself in the foot, fine, but don’t ask me to help pay the medical bills.
