That’s right; we red meat eaters aren’t the problem. And poor cows have been getting a bum rap. Via Don Surber:
From the London Telegraph: “In the past environmentalists, from Lord Stern to Sir Paul McCartney, have urged people to stop eating meat because the methane produced by cattle causes global warming. However a new study found that cattle grazed on the grasslands of China actually reduce another greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide.”
Al Gore needs to personally apologize to all cows, for blaming them and for making them feel ashamed of their gassiness. Turns out, their flatulence is not a problem (unless you drive by a herd of cows with your windows down. Phew!) because it is counteracted by their awesome grazing abilities:
From the London Telegraph: “Klaus Butterbach-Bahl, of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, carried out the study in Inner Mongolia in China. He found that grassland produced more nitrous oxide during the spring thaw when sheep or cattle have not been grazing. This is because the greenhouse gas, also known as laughing gas, is released by microbes in the soil. When the grass is long snow settles keeping the microbes warm and providing water, however when the grass is cut short by animals the ground freezes and the microbes die.”
Al Gore wouldn’t understand that; he only knows about grazing the Krispy Kreme counter. You know, because he’s all “husky” now and stuff. Understandable. He needs to drown his sorrows over being an irrelevant, bitter hack somehow.
Viva la rouge meat! (I’m only half fancy foreign talk)
Now, when will they start punitively taxing vegetarians and demonizing fast food bean sprout restaurants? I’d hold my breath, but then I’d reduce my carbon footprint and it seems I have some catching up to do. I can’t let a vegetarian beat me!

Good news indeed

Methane isn't the Biggest Problem
cwb33 Saturday, April 10th at 6:34PM EST (link)It’s the amount of CO2 created by the trucks, harvesters and processing plants that grow massive fields of corn. More CO2 is then emitted by the machinery used to harvest, process and ship the beef.
Methane gas is a small part of the problem…. a very small part. And if all our cows switched to being grass-fed like they are in China, we’d be better off. That’s not going to happen of course.

Has *anyone* seen a map overlaying average O2 levels of so-called “room air” across the U.S.?
I would be very interested to know how the O2 level in, say, downtown Indianapolis compares to that in Huntsville, or maybe a comparison of Hays to D.C.
The wind would play a huge factor in this and it’d help to grab a reading every couple hours and graph it across a year.
Wonder if that has ever been done?

Atmospheric pressure, temperature, elevation and relative humidity...
rbdwiggins (Diary) Sunday, April 11th at 11:09AM EST (link)are the parameters you seek. They are ever-changing. The wind would also be a minor contributing factor.
There are no constants in a dynamic environment such as the earth’s climate, but the variables are infinitesimal. That’s why the climate models fail so miserably.

roscopico (Diary) Monday, April 12th at 10:38PM EST (link)What exactly is the “problem”?
If the “problem” is a dynamic earth, why not just get off of it?
What, pray tell, is the proper temperature for the earth? The “problem” is the earth temperature being plus or minus half of a degree? We are to dismiss the precedent of the MWP, but get worked to a lather by the hocus-pocus of CH4, CO2 temperature forcing? We are to ignore that big bright thing in the sky (as well as water vapor) in the meantime?

It kinda goes to the heart of alot of peoples problems with our food production system.. How much of the meat you consume is free range or grass fed? if you aren’t making a concuss effort chances are NONE. The agriculture subsidies go to the multinational food giants whose factories propagate this system , instead of, the small farmer whose cows are more likely to do that which the article discusses.

100%, if you really want to know
Jack_Savage (Diary) Sunday, April 11th at 9:22PM EST (link)It is either a local farmer’s Black Angus that is killed for me and processed locally (really not a huge effort), or a nice, fat white tailed deer which I have shot (hopefully in the neck, so the meat isn’t spoiled by the bullet and he / she isn’t able to run very far…).
Most of the beef cattle in my part of the country are either grain or grass fed, free ranging, sold at a local stock market then shipped to processors.
You really don’t know a lot about this. Really.
