Bart Stupak just had a revelation. And it’s a disturbing one.
Sitting in an airport, on his way home to Michigan, Rep. Bart Stupak, a pro-life Democrat, is chagrined. “They’re ignoring me,” he says, in a phone interview with National Review Online. “That’s their strategy now. The House Democratic leaders think they have the votes to pass the Senate’s health-care bill without us. At this point, there is no doubt that they’ve been able to peel off one or two of my twelve. And even if they don’t have the votes, it’s been made clear to us that they won’t insert our language on the abortion issue.”…
What are Democratic leaders saying? “If you pass the Stupak amendment, more children will be born, and therefore it will cost us millions more. That’s one of the arguments I’ve been hearing,” Stupak says. “Money is their hang-up. Is this how we now value life in America? If money is the issue — come on, we can find room in the budget. This is life we’re talking about.”
If Obamacare passes, Stupak says, it could signal the end of any meaningful role for pro-life Democrats within their own party. “It would be very, very hard for someone who is a right-to-life Democrat to run for office,” he says. “I won’t leave the party. I’m more comfortable here and still believe in a role within it for the right-to-life cause, but this bill will make being a pro-life Democrat much more difficult. They don’t even want to debate this issue. We’ll probably have to wait until the Republicans take back the majority to fix this.”
We knew this. For all their talk of pro-choice, the far left is actually pro-abortion. It’s about an agenda to them, not about life. And remember, not too long ago Senator Feinstein said it was “morally correct” to fund abortion. This just exposes the face underneath the mask a bit more. Now, it isn’t just about funding abortion, but using it as a cost-saving tool. Bart Stupak is realizing that now — in a moment of division with his party, he had some clarity. He is a Democrat insider and he sees this chilling reality in his own Caucus.
They said Death Panels were ridiculous and a thing thought up by evil Republicans to scare people. Yet, they seek to institute Death Panels for the unborn. As a way to save money.
Stupak asked “Is this how we value life in America?” Sadly, to the pro-abortion Democrats, yes, it is. That’s one of the horrifying consequences of their pro-abortion agenda: Once life is devalued in any form, all life is devalued.
Stupak says it probably can’t be fixed until the Republicans take back the majority. I say, we can’t wait for that nor can we take a chance. This bill must die. Now.

jcincy Friday, March 12th at 6:41PM EST (link)The mindset of today’s liberal is not difficult to understand.
Romans1:28-32 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

CincoSolas_del_Bronx (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 7:33PM EST (link)that, with the exception of the tiny percentage of humanity bound to the Sinaitic covenant (whom he will deal with in the following verses), Paul applies it to the entire Gentile world without exception. Which means, yes indeed it applies to “the mindset of today’s liberal”, but also–hold your horses–to “the mindset of today’s conservative”.
I like a well-told story. But if you’re going to tell THIS story, you’re better telling the WHOLE story, or none of it at all.

You assume much about my ability to distinguish good from evil
CincoSolas_del_Bronx (Diary) Friday, March 12th at 9:43PM EST (link)and I can’t do anything about that, at least in this venue. My concern, however, is that you have applied the Romans passage explicitly to “today’s liberals” without bothering to mention that in the flow of Paul’s argument, developed through the following chapter and culminating in chapter 3, even those who do pronounce judgment on those real evils find themselves likewise deserving God’s wrath.

Ah... no... read it again...
jcincy Friday, March 12th at 11:02PM EST (link)According to Paul’s writing in Romans 3 righteousness comes through faith in Christ’s work.
No where does Paul suggest to turn a blind eye to the evil of his day… or the evil of our day. You judge a tree by the fruit it bears. The fruit of the democratic party is the death of innocent children.

No disagreement here taking each of your statements in turn
CincoSolas_del_Bronx (Diary) Saturday, March 13th at 12:46AM EST (link)The danger, however, with applying the last verses of Romans 1 to a particular class of people–here liberals/Democrats–is that Paul applies it to the entirety of the Gentile world, which also just happens to include the bulk of conservatives/Republicans.
This is one of the dangers of transferring American political exceptionalism to theological exceptionalism. Paul’s purpose in writing that passage was not to assist in drawing a political distinction 2000 years later–his Holy Spirit-inspired words are part of a grander argument which silences the whole world before the judgment seat of God.
Of course that is all prologue to the announcement of the glorious, sinner-justifying gospel of grace found solely through faith in Jesus Christ, which comes as a shout of Good News! late in chapter 3 and is developed through the rest of the letter. But implying that the judgments of chapter 1 are peculiarly appropriate to a single group alone runs counter to that whole necessary introduction to the terrors being found without that righteousness which alone will satisfy the holy justice of God.

janis (Diary) Saturday, March 13th at 9:47AM EST (link)In Tennessee, when I called several of the offices of the Dem. Reps last fall, the position for most of them was that “I cannot support the bill as currently written.” Going further, it was then about not providing funding for abortions. Since then, Bart Gordon, Tn-6th, has decided to retire and is leaning, “Yes”, although I’m certain it’s not leaning, it’s full-fledged being on board and probably was all along. John Tanner, D-8th (I think), is also retiring this year. Jim Cooper-D was always going to vote for it, as was Steve Cohen-D.
And, yes, Tanner and Gordon both fooled their constituents by styling themselves as moderates, but both voted for the liberal programs most of the time. Their news releases issued to local newspapers have always been about the good things they are bringing home to their districts, never about the reasons why they voted for stuff their districts didn’t want nor believe in.

rsjt Friday, March 12th at 7:21PM EST (link)Not only will this increase abortions dramatically but if this passes it will overwhelm our current health care system with the sheer numbers of the newly entitiled………unless dems ‘force’ pro-lifers and religious people to not participate because of this new health bill’s abortion provisions. That is why it is so important to the pro-abort forces to include federal funding. Pro-lifers will be forced to participate in funding abortion directly or pay fines for refusing to participate or go to jail for not paying the fines. That is why they would not rule out jail for those who refuse to buy insurance when asked that very question last year.

Can you imagine some (pro-life) Catholic Joe or Jane, a life-long Democrat, parents and grandparents all life-long Democrats, all totally in love with the Democrat party, hearing that they will have no place in the Democrat party if this bill passes? Basically the Democrat party is telling them, “Move along now, we got our votes from you but you aren’t necessary to us anymore,” How do you think they’ll feel?
This is going to make a big, big difference in Pelosi’s plans for next week. That’s why Stupak did it.

Not necessarily the Catholic health care systems
mwmom Saturday, March 13th at 3:55PM EST (link)I’d totally have agreed with you had I not just seen this article online:

Don’t know if the link will work but it’s about the Catholic nun in charge of a large health organization thinking the whole thing is a-okay with her. The bishops may disagree, however.

Heard him yesterday. Did it.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
What are they going to say?

eldstenorge Saturday, March 13th at 8:01AM EST (link)Is this guy for real? He wants to stay in the Democrat Party while also saying that they will have to wait for the Republicans to regain control of Congress before they can again protect life. Does this man have any moral foundation? Life is the first issue, without life, nothing else matters and no other rights are ever going to attach-period. I would never vote for this man as he does not stand on principle. He makes a good show, as he is in a rather Republican district, but there is no substance as he is not willing to stand up to this Chicago mob and tell them he has had enough. How many more of God’s children will be murdered because of people in office like Bart Stupak?
They guy is a democrat because he agrees with them 99% of the time
JSobieski (Diary) Saturday, March 13th at 9:52AM EST (link)he has been standing up to the Chicago mob this entire process in a consistent manner (while being dismissed by both sides I might add).
If Obamacare is not passed, no single individual (besides maybe Obama himself) will be more responsible for its failures.
If abortions concern you, I would focus on those who have folded, not those who continue to stand tall on the issue.
My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.
STOP THE MADNESS!
A reduction in the rate of spending increases is NOT a cut!
In-state tuition for illegals is NOT amnesty!
Requiring someone to pay their medical bills is NOT an individual mandate!
Reducing tax rates is NOT a tax increase!
Did He Really Think?
bvinsf (Diary) Saturday, March 13th at 11:50AM EST (link)Did Stupak really think that his anti-abortion measure would actually make it? This is the Democrat’s landmark bill and providing abortions is one of the Dem party’s top issues. There was NO WAY it was going to contain any anti-abortion language and Stupak and the rest are suckers for ever beliving that it would.
The sad thing is that if Stupak had any forsight and not just some sort of dopey, wishy confidence in his own party’s integrity they could have killed this bill months ago when it was being held up in the House. But like everything else, it seems like foresight is not the Dem’s strong suit.
A rosary a day keeps the Devil away!
He got it in the House bill the first time, which shocked the heck out of me
JSobieski (Diary) Saturday, March 13th at 12:41PM EST (link)Stupak otherwise supports the bill, so it makes sense that his goal was not to kill the bill.
Basically you are saying he lacks foresight in being a pro-life democrat.

The coming Immigration storm
casca Saturday, March 13th at 7:08PM EST (link)With the onset of President Obama’s push for Amnesty, the opponents are mobilizing to stop this absolutely ridiculous move to legitimize the 20 to 30 million illegal aliens, when 15 million and upwards of citizens and residents are jobless. Anytime that reform rears its ugly head, pro-sovereignty, anti-illegal immigrants organization will get into the fight, even when the economy is sound? But to try and force through this Immigration reform, when millions of American are losing their homes, applying for begrudged unemployment benefit and lining up at food banks. Its just illogical that the Democrats would gather together with a few Republicans to slip through another law to reward illegal immigrants? How can they even dream this up under the circumstances? Most any element of enforcement has always remained underfunded and eyed by politicians who represents corporate welfare to compromise laws.
HOW CAN THEY SAY THAT THE 1986 LAW IS BROKEN, WHEN IT NEVER WAS ENFORCED? Some of the most talented, skillful politicians-ex attorneys authored that bill, including Liberal personage Ted Kennedy? No! Its just a good excuse to arrange another AMNESTY, because previous administrations failed to secure the border or even try? YOU MIGHT ASK THESE RADICAL POLITICIANS–WHY CHANGE THE 1986 IMMIGRATION BILL, WHEN YOU CAN AMEND IT?
Next weekend, 100,000 pro-amnesty supporters are expected to flood Washington to show their support for a blanket amnesty. This is why the Sanctuary State of California needs a governor such as Steve Poizner? He has promised to fight illegal immigration and cut-off benefits to the millions settled in the state as does the majority of the “Tea Party” movement. Its time with thought of our own poor, desperate people, instead of taxes being extorted in support of foreign nationals?
IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY AND STOPPING THE ILLEGAL ALIEN INVASION. ONE FLAG–ONE LANGUAGE.
Get ready for one of the biggest battles of any reform packages that the parties throw at us? Those Patriotic Americans and legal immigrants who believe in Americas sovereignty and desire the borders be firmly secure, heavy funding for immigration enforcement and NO BLANKET AMNESTY. No MORE GOVERNMENT ENTITLEMENTS FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS AND FAMILIES. Become a member of NUMBERSUSA.dot.com MANDATE E-VERIFY. Over a million members and growing. Are you ready to fight against OVERPOPULATION and CHAIN MIGRATION? JUST DO NOT LET UP AT CAUSING YOUR POLITICIANS PALPITATIONS AT 202-224-3121. Don’t forget to give your state lawmakers an ultimatum; NO RE-ELECTION VOTE.

jenniferjmilleresq Saturday, March 13th at 9:23PM EST (link)I’m all fired up now, especially after last night watching the film about William Wilburforce, the British slavery abolionist (“Amazing Grace”). We need abolitionists again in this struggle. I am just now realizing that we have not measured up in this battle. We need members of Congress like him who will fight tirelessly against seemingly insurmountable odds and attorneys supporting them devising legislation that will destroy the abortion trade. That type of thing (involving neutral flags on trade ships and resulting risk of piracy) is what finally destroyed the slave trade in England, the vote on abolition coming after the trade had dwindled to almost nothing. Legislation that makes it easier for women suffering harm at the hands of abortionists to sue and get higher damages, fees and regulation of the disposal and transport of fetal tissue, you name it, it should be attempted. Along with emphasizing abstinence before marriage, contraceptives, etc., women who find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy should understand that they will not be disdained, but will be welcomed with open arms by charitable and government agencies to facillitate birth and adoption or beginning parenthood. This is a little out of my firm’s litigation areas, but I am committing to spending few minutes each day brainstorming and researching to produce a list of potential legislation that states can attempt. I challenge likemnded attorneys and others to do the same.
