Dude, Where’s My Strategy?

From the diaries by Erick. What he said!

Instead of using every trick in the book to defeat Sen. Harry Reid’s government-run health plan, Senate GOP leadership is idly sitting by while Democrats tweak the bill to buy off votes.  Instead of doing everything in its power to block a bill that is solidly opposed by more voters than not, Senate GOP leadership is allowing Sen. Reid to process amendments and move the trains as if this bill, the largest government takeover of the private sector in American history, represented nothing out of the ordinary.  With each passing amendment, Democrats become closer and closer to buying off the all-important 60th vote.

To fully grasp the near-criminal ineffectiveness of the party’s current strategy, just peruse the following news stories and ask yourself, “Do narratives like these increase or decrease the likelihood of Senate approval of government-run health care?”

  • AP“The 61-39 roll call Thursday by which the Senate adopted an amendment to safeguard coverage of mammograms and preventive screening tests for women under a revamped health care system.”
  • Reuters“U.S. Senate bolsters preventive care for women”
  • BloombergSenate Approves Plan to Boost U.S. Mammogram Testing

Top GOP leaders have mistakenly convinced themselves that the key to defeating the bill is to process a number of Republican “messaging” amendments while letting Democrats offer whatever amendments are necessary to buy 60 votes.

There are three fatal problems with this strategy: 1) leadership insists on pushing its own too-clever-by-half “message” instead of listening to the clear message faxed, e-mailed and phoned to every elected official in Washington (“KILL THE BILL!”), 2) as evidenced by the articles above, the current “messaging strategy” is an abysmal failure, and 3) by allowing amendments to be processed at no cost to the majority party, GOP leaders are merely greasing the skids for government-run health care.

In the movie “Braveheart,” William Wallace tells Robert the Bruce, a noble who had the desire but not the guts to do the right thing, “Men don’t follow titles; they follow courage.” It would be refreshing to see more of the latter from those with the former in the United States Senate.

Preventive care for men?

In fact, how about we let people decide.

even mention the abortion issue. Come on people. GET A CLUE! KILL THE BILL! This is the most depressing, disheartening charade of “due process’ I have ever witnessed. I remember when I was younger, reading about Europe and the USSR, I thought how awful it must be to have to live under such repressive authoritarian rulers. I was so thankful to have been born in the U.S.A. with all our freedoms, and our wonderful government. I fear we are soon to lose all of this. (OK, I was young then – obviously our government hasn’t been all that wonderful for at least the last 50 years, but in theory…)

No!!!11!1!!1!1! The Bilderbergers are coming

it was certainly better than it is now nt

And it will fail, like it always does.

Pathetic.

That’s the nicest description to enter my mind wrt the Republican “Leadership” in a long, long time.

I thought the McCain Amendment was a trick.

shadowtax (Diary) Thursday, December 3rd at 4:53PM EST (link)

I swear I read it here on Redstate somewhere. The McCain Amendment addressing Medicare cuts sends the bill back to committee causing a delay likely to kill the bill and requiring another 60 vote motion to bring it back to the floor.

I have no idea whether the trick will work or if the leadership needed to agree to votes on these other amendments to get to the vote on the McCain Amendment.

It looks like the GOP is trying to kill the bill to me. And if they weren’t I’m sure ya’ll would be posting about how idiotic it was for the leadership to sit on their hands.

McCain Amendment Failed.

shadowtax (Diary) Thursday, December 3rd at 5:02PM EST (link)

Ok, it failed. But I still don’t think it was nothing.

McCain

Sean Davis (Diary) Thursday, December 3rd at 5:23PM EST (link)

The McCain amendment failed because GOP leadership agreed to a 60-vote threshold, instead of the regular majority threshold (it received 58 votes).

Actually, Sean, it failed 58 - 42 with all Pubs in favor

Doesn't Matter What Amendments Go In...

bass_man (Diary) Thursday, December 3rd at 6:09PM EST (link)

…once the government gets control of healthcare, they will do whatever they want.

It’s already happened in Canada, where the provincial government changed the coverage and raised taxes to deal with their “shortfalls” in the health care budgets…while health care gets no better.

Precisely

edintexas Friday, December 4th at 11:11AM EST (link)

In fact, no matter what the final statute might prescribe, the amount of latitude which our “lawmakers” put into bills these days allows each administration’s political appointees to the bureaucracy to radically change the program. And once it is changed, it is very difficult to change back again.

And that isn’t even considering the degree to which some administrations simply ignore the requirements of various laws (not to mention most of them in the past century or so ignoring the Constitution).

If the Senate passes Obamacare, Mitch McConnell needs to step down as leader

WarEagle01 (Diary) Thursday, December 3rd at 6:46PM EST (link)

Thus far, his management of this process has been completely inept. This monstrosity could be defeated in the Senate but they are just f^(king it away for the sake of the “club” and to keep the cocktail party invites from their Demo buds coming. Disgraceful.

I don’t know. He has charisma when compared to Harry Reid. Well, at least when he speaks nobody is tempted to check for a pulse. Of course Reid, like most all Democrats, really knows how to use power – which is something virtually no Republican has known for decades.

Strategy?

anotherindyfilmguy (Diary) Thursday, December 3rd at 7:06PM EST (link)

I thought the final part of the strategy was to let Lieberman filibuster the darn thing to death while looking like they are not the obstructionists… but then I’m an optimist…

Of course the RINOs could be trying to help make it work as much as possible as well… that would be suicide for the nation as it stands now… does “deliberately destroying the economy” fall under acts of treason? Just wondering…

Santorum? Well, at least he’s not Romney…

Where are the true leaders?

Jesse V Friday, December 4th at 8:25AM EST (link)

I am sick… I am sick of the lack of Conservative leadership in Washington. I am sick of the Republicans playing nice with the Dems in an effort to appease all sides of the political spectrum. I’m just sick of this all!

To all in Washington I am serving notice, notice that you will be voted out if you don’t start leading this country and stop playing these political games! None of you deserve your jobs, democrat or republican. Not one of you! Do you hear us? The American People are sick of your junk and we are going to vote you out of office beginning in 2010.

Threats won't work

Since they voted themselves a cushy retirement package, and all they need to do is serve 1 term to get that cushy package, they do not have any fear of us.It’s like telling your kid to go to his room when he’s bad. Chances are there’s a computor in there with all kinds of games to play. It would probably be a relief for them to lose their jobs………. Jerry (in Tucson)

Where are the true leaders? They reside in the collective votes of precinct committeemen

ColdWarrior (Diary) Friday, December 4th at 10:53AM EST (link)

The problem is, not enough people who claim to be “conservative activists” are involved in the real rough and tumble of Republican Party politics. Threats from registered voters about how things are going to change in 2010 are empty unless backed up by real action. It’s precinct committeemen who elect the leadership of the Republican Party. It’s precinct committeemen who have the biggest impact on who wins in the Republican primaries.

Fact: On election day in 2008, HALF the Republican Party precinct committeeman slots nationwide were vacant. The Party that opposed the Debtocrats was at HALF STRENGTH.

Fact: On election day in 2008, in Maricopa County, AZ, the heart of “Goldwater Country,” of the 6320 precinct committeeman slots in the Republican Party, fewer than ONE-THIRD, 1,989, were filled. When I moved to AZ I assumed the Republican Party was at full-strength and robust. Boy, was I mistaken. Because of the apathy and lethargy of conservatives here, the Party is weak. Just look at those numbers. There are 694,000 registered Republicans in Maricopa County, but only 1,989 were actually involved in internal party politics. That is pathetic, no?

Fact: Michael Steele is a reflection of the split in the Party between liberals/moderates/RINOs and conservatives. Imagine if that 50-50 split suddenly went 75-25 in favor of conservatives. It could. If conservatives filled up all the empty PC slots overnight.

Redstaters: Want to send a REAL signal to the Republican “leaders” in Congress and the Party itself? Then become a precinct committeeman NOW (deadlines for becoming one so as to be able to participate in the next round of Party leadership elections are fast approaching in some states — do you know what they are in YOUR state?)

Here’s where to start to learn more: http://www.redstate.com/martin_a_knight/2009/05/05/the-committeeman-project/

Redstaters: Ever been to a local GOP meeting? Have you ever been a precinct committeeman? “The GOP” could care less what you think if you are not PART of it as a voting member. We conservatives CAN change the leadership of the Party by . . . drum roll . . . changing the leadership of the Party. But you ONLY get to do that if you are a precinct committeeman.

Every state is different. HOW to do this is a closely guarded secret in some states. In others, the process is simple and well known. Go here to see how it’s done in some states: www.theprecinctproject.wordpress.com

Gee, it took me all of about three hours on a Saturday morning to go door-to-door in my precinct to get the signatures of 10 registered Republicans or Independents to qualify to get on the ballot. My local GOP legislative district leaders gave me a precinct walking list and a map. I took my kids with me on a Saturday morning and they got their first real civics lesson. I’ve recruited two of my neighbors to become precinct committeemen. It’s fun. My precinct went from 4 of 8 slots being filled in 2008 to now full strength.

Bottom line: we conservatives have to get into the trenches and that means going to local GOP meetings and volunteering to become a precinct committeeman. (It’s called different things in different states — but the important thing is to become a “voting member” of the Party to you can vote for the leadership and vote to endorse the BEST candidates in the primary elections.) In some states and counties you’ll have to DEMAND that you be given the information to become a voting member and roadblocks will be thrown in front of you — no one will call you back. You will be ignored. But, your country is at stake. You must assert your right to be involved. Drag every conservative friend along with you to the meetings.

This is a pure numbers game. Want more conservative Party leaders? Then you have to be in a position to cast votes for them.

Want better, more conservative candidates winning the Republican primary elections? Then you have to get out of the bleachers and onto the political playing field as a real player — a precinct committeeman. Odds are you will run unopposed. It takes only an hour or two a month. Isn’t your country worth that?

Don’t expect someone else to do it. YOU have to.

Ever hear any of the incumbent Republicans talk about this? Almost none will. Why? Because they are TERRIFIED they’ll awake the slumbering conservatives, who will come into the Party where they reside and then support a BETTER, MORE CONSERVATIVE “non-professional politician” in the primary and defeat them. The number one priority of virtually all incumbents is to hang on to their cushy seat in the legislature — ergo, they like the status quo just fine. So they don’t say a word about this. Go to the new GOP.com website. See if you can find any information about this. Well, some guy named Cold Warrior posted some info about it. But that’s all I was able to find.

I hope you will become a precinct committeeman asap.

Thank you.
