When we lived out there in the mid-70s, students at the U of O had burned the ROTC building five years previous in 1970. Oregon was the first state to legalize possession of under an ounce of marijuana and many of the kids I went to school with had parents who grew pot in their back yards.
We lived right on the Willamette River and the greenway path went right by our house. One day a hippie that I now refer to as “Johnny Potseed” came along planting marijuana seeds and encouraging me as a junior high student to get back to nature, eat some goat cheese, etc. Nice guy but he really flipped my dad out since he was an office in the USAF.
Blue River Nudist Colony (Willametens now I think?) was thriving and there was an annual Renaissance (Arts) Fair. The fair is now called the Oregon Country Fair and hasn’t changed much from the 15,000 naked hippies selling homemade crafts and bongs.
