There’s a reason not many people live in really cold places and those that do live there only go out in it when they really have to. It doesn’t have to be down in those truly frightful sub-zero temps either. This morning it is a balmy +16F in Anchorage (61 degrees North lattitude). If you got stranded overnight in those beautiful mountains that surround Anchorage and had to try to walk out, unless you had pretty good survival equipment and skills, you’d never make it out. You’d start to get very tired very quickly from the dual demands of walking through the snow and your body trying to keep warm. Before long, say at most a few hours depending on your body fat and overall condition, your body wouldn’t be able to keep up and numbness and shivering would start. Then before long, you’d stop shivering but be very tired and you’d sit down to rest. You’d begin to think you were warm and perhaps even take off your coat. They’d find what the animals leave of your body some day. And all that would happen overnight in sight of the lights of Anchorage.

I hope they’re charged for the rescue.
