“Moderates” now claim Eisenhower (and only very recently) because they realized that no one was buying their “loyal Reagan foot-soldier” acts anymore, largely because history has quite accurately recorded the fact that the Republican “moderates” (e.g. Packwood, Mathias, etc.) of the time were every bit the back-stabbing windsocks they still are today, and the fact that they kept trying to make him out to be some Democrat-lite Republican – like themselves.

So now, they claim Ike – even though none of them can tell you what his platform was in 1952 and/or 1956. Ike is far back enough in the past for them to claim without suffering much blowback that he would have been pro-choice, pro-gay marriage and anti-Second Amendment today. And personally, I think they quite like the fact that the GOP began their 40 year sojourn in the wilderness on his watch.

An excellent military commander, strategist and a bona fide hero Ike certainly was, but as a President and leader of a Party, he wasn’t particularly outstanding, and in the latter he was something of a failure.

Moderates are nothing if not avatars of mediocrity.
