Happy Hour Open Thread

Because We Just Wanna Have Fun

We’ve all been musing how Obama-I is looking less and less like it’s going to be Carter-II, and more and more like it’s going to be Clinton-III.

But this takes that story to a whole new level:

“The biggest cleavage in the Democratic Party is over America’s role in the world,” said Kenneth Baer, a co-founder of the quarterly publication Democracy: A Journal of Ideas….

Well, fry mah hide – it sure does indeed look like Clintonism is back.

But that just will not do.

We therefore open the floor to suggestions regarding the contention highlighted in the quote above.

Open thread hilarity….

A bit off topic but...

JPH (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 6:09PM EST (link)

From the Times article on NRO’s The Corner.

Jacob Weisberg, editor in chief of the Slate Group and a longtime observer of and participant in the political magazine sphere, said, “I think Frum is the most interesting writer they have. You can’t assume he’ll come down on the side of the party line.”

I think the problem of conservative magazines is they often follow the party line more than liberal magazines,” he said.

Unlike, let’s say, Slate.

Today, Slate’s staff and contributors reveal how they’re voting in next week’s presidential election. This continues a tradition we began in 2000 and repeated in 2004. It will come as little surprise to many of our readers—and certainly as no surprise to Sarah “Media Elite” Palin—that Barack Obama won Slate in a landslide. In capturing 55 of our 57 votes, with 1 to McCain and 1 to Libertarian Bob Barr, Obama won an even bigger Slate majority than Al Gore in 2000 (29 of 37 votes) or John Kerry in 2004 (46 of 52 votes).

It would seem that Weisberg is on permanent Happy Hour.

Interesting quote by Baer

Jack_Savage (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 6:21PM EST (link)

Since this is shaping up to be Clinton III, with Hillary very possibly as a cabinet member, Baer astutely realized that the biggest cleavage in the Democrat party would certainly not be found there.

filling the White House with the Clinton’s old people.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Why wouldn’t he use a word that means exactly what he intends to say – such as schism. You know, one that doesn’t imply anything else.

I don't think Carter II is mutually exclusive of Clinton III

Canthros (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 6:53PM EST (link)

Clinton was fortunate enough to preside over hugely positive economic and social developments that he mostly had nothing to do with.

Obama’s coming in at what looks like the beginning of an economic downturn, during a war that isn’t quite over in Afghanistan.

I think Bill’s forst thought by 11am on 9/11/01 was that he wished he had heeded Dick Morris’s advice and done more to defeat al Qaida and that if Bubba had another term, he would be much more aggresive on terrorism.

Bill Clinton = Frivolity

Skanderbeg (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 8:55PM EST (link)

That’s a good question.

I actually don’t think he’s capable of any sort of serious thought though on things of this sort.

Everything about Bill is frivolous and involves/involved frivolity. Life to him is (and always has been) just one big rolling party.

The only post-9/11 thoughts he might have had were he still President would probably have been along the lines of what he thought of everything else – “How can this help me score even more hot bimbos?”

Leo Donofrio SCOTUS case

LI_Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 11:02PM EST (link)

Not sure if this subject is taboo at Redstate, but there was progress today in Donofrio’s natural born case at the Supreme Court, docket # 08A407.
Justice Thomas reviewed the case and it has been sceduled for Conference by the 9 Justices on Dec. 5
The SCOTUS website listing is below

No. 08A407
Title: Leo C. Donofrio, Applicant
v.
Nina Mitchell Wells, New Jersey Secretary of State

Docketed:
Lower Ct: Supreme Court of New Jersey
Case Nos.: (AM-0153-08T2 at the New Jersey Appellate Division without a docket number)

~~~Date~~~ ~~~~~~~Proceedings and Orders~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nov 3 2008 Application (08A407) for stay pending the filing and disposition of a petition for a writ of certiorari, submitted to Justice Souter.
Nov 6 2008 Application (08A407) denied by Justice Souter.
Nov 14 2008 Application (08A407) refiled and submitted to Justice Thomas.
Nov 19 2008 DISTRIBUTED for Conference of December 5, 2008
Not taboo, but don't turn it into
mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 11:05PM EST (link)
a conspiracy theory.
how is it a conspiracy
LI_Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 11:11PM EST (link)
if Justice Thomas has seen enough merit in the case that it is now scheduled for Conference of the 9 Justices?
This case is not a Birth Certificate case.
It is about whether a candidate born with dual citizenship is elegible as a POTUS candidate. Both McCain and Obama are challenged in this case. Obama’s website, Fightthesmears, has said openly that he was born with dual citizenship.
my post didn't go through
LI_Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 11:12PM EST (link)
sorry now I see my post went
LI_Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 11:23PM EST (link)
through.
This case is real and fortunately is moving forward. The docket number is 08A407 at the Supremecourtus.gov website.
Many of the other cases focus on the Birth Certificate but in this case the COLB is irrelevant.
The premise is that a POTUS candidate can only qualify as a natural born citizen not only having been born on US soil but also have Singular Loyalty to the US. Naturalized citizens or those born with dual nationalities would not qualify.
We'll see on Dec. 5 at the full conference
LI_Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, November 19th at 11:40PM EST (link)
if Justice Thomas can get 3 other Justices to agree to hear this case, thereby satisfying the Rule of 4.
Just the fact that it wasn’t denied and Justice Thomas sees merit to the case is substantial. To my knowledge the issue of non-elegibilty for POTUS under the Natural Born Citizen rule has never been heard by SCOTUS before.
