I drew the short straw over at the virtual bar, and so it falls to me to report to the readership that the rumor mill (via Hot Air and the UK Guardian) says that Senator Hillary Clinton has been offered the post of SecState.
Or not. The update says that she’s being considered but the financial vetting goes on. Who knows.
Well, since I got stuck with this assignment, you’ll have to suffer with some attendant personal opinion.
Methinks she wants this one – and might even have lobbied for it. Face reality, she was never really interested in being a Senator from New York. That was just local test-marketing before taking the product national. But with the Presidency route likely foreclosed (between an incumbent likely to have the 2012 slot and the further shifting-around of electoral votes after the 2010 census), she probably wants out in the nicest possible way. This would do it.
Let’s see how the Rooskies react when morning dawns over there shortly….

I live in NY now and I hate to admit it but she is a Senator for life is she chose.
So Patterson will chose her replacement and I am willing to take a bet he either names Cuomo (he has thought of running for Senate) or he choses a minority
If this does happen NY will have 2 Senate Races in 2010 and sadly I see no GOP frontrunners. Rudy is damaged in city, Bloomberg is running for 3rd term as mayor.
I could just see Peter King going for it seeing NY is slated to lose 2 seats after redistricting and seeing NY only has 3 Republicans in Congress its between him, Lee, and McHugh who will get ousted unless all 3 are impacted.
YES!!! More Sitting Senators need to be appointed. Go Team Obama, clean house.

I don't know whether to respect Obama or be disgusted with him
Shaggy_Dog (Diary) Monday, November 17th at 10:27PM EST (link)On the one hand it is a pretty impressive political move to put her on ice like this since she’d be a four year headache for him in the Senate, on the other hand he is rewarding his one time rival who championed herself as “the candidate of hard working people, white people.” But that’s been conveniently forgotten, right?

She works for him
She won’t be seen everyday and not voting and you knew when she voted against him it would be headlines
He can fire her if things go bad on this front and many fear it will so who gets the bad press? She will.
I don't get it
DL80 Monday, November 17th at 10:52PM EST (link)I don’t understand why Hillary would want the job. As dld17 said, she could probably be Senator in perpetuity in NY. Why risk that for a job that is potentially very thankless? She did seem to be very influenced by the notion of “setting a precedent” for women, and this would do that in a big way, but is that worth potentially scuttling the rest of her political career? Best case, she is successful in the role for 8 years and runs for President in 2016 at the age of 68. Worst case, she is a total failure and can’t win election in NY Senate (or anywhere). Unless she sees it as 8 years of her last job before retirement?
It keeps her off SCOTUS, plus.........
Kenny Solomon (Diary) Monday, November 17th at 11:09PM EST (link)World leaders would have to deal with another woman Sec. State for at least another 4 years……….a loud woman………….a REALLY loud, obnoxious, power-mad woman.
The possible comedy alone may be worth it.
Besides, what’s the worst she could do as Sec. State…. start a war ?
As a SCOTUS justice, she’d help destroy the country.

Illinicon (Diary) Monday, November 17th at 11:38PM EST (link)Atleast she is a grown-up on foreign affairs and she is very shrewd, I doubt we see any type of hoodwinked type deals with North Korea as has happened with the last two adminastrations. Plus it will be fun to see what happens in she disagrees with Barry on policy. I mean do you see her wanting to get a plane to go to Tehran to meet with Ahmidinejad? I wonder who will make more fracas when their good advice on a foreign policy matter is rejected, her or Biden.

Obama has little, if any network of his own
jonreagan (Diary) Monday, November 17th at 11:42PM EST (link)As many of us pointed out during the campaign, Obama is nothing more than a two-bit Chicago pol. His contacts (outside of Rezko, Wright, et al.) are of the county supervisor variety–not the kind of people you want when staffing the Executive Branch. Worse yet, he made little if any effort to cultivate colleagues during his 15 months as a US Senator. So what, or who, does he bring to the party? Absolutely nothing.
Consequently, this President-elect has few if any associates with national stature and experience. I can’t imagine he likes presiding over “Clinton III”, but that’s how his administration is shaping up…nothing but a bunch of retreads. Voters can’t say they weren’t warned.
Looks like a four person marlin charter to me.

ColoKid Tuesday, November 18th at 12:18AM EST (link)Why does she want the job?
To build up her resumé so she can run for president someday? hahaha
So she can fly around the world in a thankless job in dangerous times doing the bidding of a man she doesn’t respect?
So the 3AM calls will get rerouted to her?
So she won’t have to worry about running for Senate majority leader when Harry Reid gets tossed by Nevada voters in 2010?
So someone else in the Senate can shepherd her lifetime achievement project, national health care?
So she can be humiliated again by Bill’s shenanigans, this time of a financial nature?
Sure, makes sense to me. hahaha
You mean Ft. Marcy Park?

Illinicon, she was the “co-president” in the administration preceding the present one.
rbd, I can very easily see your scenario playing out exactly that way. I wouldn’t put that play past the Clinton’s at all.
