Certainly under normal circumstances its the Presidential candidate the voters want to hear more from, and need to hear more from. In Obama's case that was right, his half hour buy was all about him, Biden was probably not even seen the whole time (I didnt watch it). But in the case of the McCain campaign, Governor Palin is the one the people want to see, more than McCain himself. She is the one that people are voting for, and in some cases voting against (those who have been hoodwinked and bamboozled by the liberal media). If they had not viciously attacked her and driven her numbers down to the extent that they have I don't think theres any doubt that McCain would be ahead right now. Therefore the best thing the McCain campaign could do to win this election is to do something to drive her numbers back up. To that end, a half hour of live TV, unedited, unscripted, interviewed by one of the most well known men in American Journalism history (and one who has been caught in a huge anti-Republican scandal in 2004 no less, so nobody could accuse him of being biased in FAVOR of Republicans) is something that FAR more people would watch than the completely non-newsworthy show that Obama put on. They would tune in, and assuming she does a good job, her numbers would go WAY up, and as a result many more people would vote for McCain. If you just had McCain on for half an hour, being interviewed or doing anything else, who would really care? I wouldnt. Id watch it, but it wouldn't be a big deal. Palin proving herself in a live interview with a major interviewer would be a HUGE deal, it would be extremely exciting television, it would truly be 'Must See TV'.

Palin isn't the candidate (yet). McCain is. I think your idea has merit if done with McCain. Consider it "equal time".
