Pay to train your competition?

a Republican issue if there ever was one

Obama mentioned his Obama Youth League during the campaign. Universal community service could be achieved by forcing universities to require students to perform an amount of “volunteer” service as a requirement for graduation. (I doubt that military service would count). This can be done legally since the universities are highly subsidized by the Federal government.

Well, the Institute for International Education (IIE) has come out with a report on foreign student enrollment in our college and Universities. The numbers will shock you. MIT (30%),Ill. Inst. of Tech (42%), Polytech Inst. of NY (35%), NJ Inst Tech (20%) and the list goes on and on. Especially high are the numbers for Engineering, Math and computer sciences. These are not jobs Americans won’t do. These are high paying jobs Americans can’t get.

More disturbing is that we are paying for it. University scholarships are the major source of financial aid for foreign students.

We should be demanding that Universities cap the number of foreign students and foreign scholarships as a condition of federal aid. This is a no brainer that most of the public would agree with.

This issue is tailor made for Republicans, especially during a recession. Talk about supplying the rope to hang ourselves with. I think Americans are fed up with being the world’s “chump”.

We have lots of money don't we ?

Congress is giving a lot away this year, although I didn’t get any. It seems I just have less on April 15.

Things are definitely out of control. Cap foreign student admissions we pay for. We are chumps.

Recommended for discussion but the problem is that these policies are supported by the technology industry itself, who want to manufacture overseas in a global marketplace. They know that America has the best technical education system in the world, and that a large number of these people will return to their home countries, where they will grow the skilled engineering and technical base there.

Eventually the companies themselves will move their headquarters abroad.

In another field...

In another field, I expect most of the world’d pharmaceutical research and manufacturing to be done in India by 2030. Here in the United States the Pharmaceutical companies are so universally despised that if I was a Board member, what I would be doing is waiting for the overseas technological base to get up to speed and then get out of Dodge. I suspect that is what is happening.

Want fries with that?

The worldwide specialization of labor and free markets should increase the income for everyone, but countries going into a global marketplace need to make sure their specialties are going to be valuable ones. America needs to reinvigorate its manufacturing sector and start making things here that get shipped overseas. Software is going overseas. Computing will go overseas. Big Pharma will go. Banking and the world’s capital markets will go (they’re already leaving thanks to Sarbanes-Oxley and high corporate taxes). Electronics are already gone. We don’t do oil or coal or nuclear here. What are we going to do? Hollywood, theme parks, and the world’s best military aren’t going to save us alone.

Sorry kid.

You want to go into engineering? Nice Mr Obama is going to pay for your education. Ooops. MIT doesn’t have any room, you see, 30% are foreigners. Diversity you see. OUR tax money is paying their way, but we value diversity more than we value our own citizens.

High skilled jobs can leave the country. The few low skilled jobs that are left are for the illegal immigrants. It’s assumed you won’t do those jobs so you won’t be given you the opportunity anyway.

Maybe you can go to a community college and get a degree in “queer theory” or “Womyn’s Studies” instead.

If gets you blood pressure up. Be careful. You will be standing in line behind illegal immigrants for health care as well.

You don’t have to be a Republican for this to really anger you.

They may support it..

SeriousLaff (Diary) Tuesday, November 25th at 9:23AM EST (link)

but the taxpayers don’t have to support it.

And many do stay. Wasn’t McCain asked if he would grant citizenship to anyone in a US university that gets a masters degree in math or science?

Again, these are heavily subsidized by the American taxpayer.

Sadly

A lot of departments (math, engineering, IS, statistics, etc.) at a lot of Universities would close their doors due to insufficient student enrolment if it were not for foreign students.

The problem is not that potential American engineering or math majors are getting displaced by foreigners. The problem is that are school systems are not producing enough potential math, engineering, etc. majors. Take away the foreign math and engineering students and all you are left with are empty seats.
