We had our bi- monthly tea party meeting here last night and as is our usual pattern, our group leaders had gathered together clips of interviews, debates, shots of newspaper articles, and if possible transcripts of radio interviews to be put onto a power point presentation on the big screen so we all can see it. We usually do this for each of the serious candidates. This time we focused on Romney,Perry, and Cain- all the rest are inconsequential and should not be in the race at all.
A little background first, We are currently stationed at a base in Georgia, even though we are registered voters in Texas via absentee because we are a military family. We have a tea party of around 550 people, (in a neighboring city)although our numbers swell when there are trips, or events to attend. Our make up is mostly seniors, with about 50 percent, 30-40 year olds come in around another 40 percent and under thirty comes in at 10 percent. Because we are near a military base, we have all nationalities, all races represented.
After we show our little presentation, we open up the floor for feedback to see where our group stands at this moment, what we have issues with and would like to see addressed, the negatives, the positives,etc.,etc. This group was decidedly pro-Perry last time, with a few Romney supporters and a few Cain supporters, the month before(Aug) it had been pro-Bachmann. After showing clips of the last debate, we showed the interviews with each candidate.
Perry got a negative reaction at first for immigration (heartless comment), but then his subsequent interview explaining his stance in detail and his apology for the heartless comment righted that sinking ship PDQ. The consensus came to the conclusion he is not good at debates- the same as last time.
Cain got positive feedback from the debate, but then shot himself in the foot with the interview on CNN saying he would not support Perry if he were the nominee. Then we showed the tape with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday and the reaction was VISCERAL, downright fury. Living in the south and the same state Cain is from, we are all so damn tired of the race card being played, especially in the case of a story that originated from the WAPO and had only vague details, anonymous sources and regarded a rock from decades ago. Cain jumped on it- and completely undid all the good he has done in the past few weeks. “Cambridge police acted stupidly” was said by quite a few people.
Romney has never done well with our group, and this time was no exception, debate wise, few people knew he had written a hard copy book let alone that he had edited out language referring to Romneycare in his paperback when he decided to run and Obamacare was so unpopular. That was another strike, then came the ad from Romney saying Perry was for illegal immigration, which having just seen Perry explain his stance on in state tuition moments before, was demonstrably false and the reaction to Romney’s ad were scoffs of disgust. At my advice, one of our leaders put together a flow chart of Romney’s many stances on major issues, each with dates for comparison -she did it in the starburst fashion with the issue in a circle in the center and the various positions coming out like rays so you could really see the multiple changes. It was a sight to see- somebody took a copy so he could show it at his job.
So what was the final consensus? No body’s mind was changed, the Romney voters (all 4 percent of them) are still going with Romney, the majority who are planning to vote for Perry are still planning to vote for Perry and the biggest winner of the debate,Cain, dinged himself by saying he would not support Perry as a nominee. People were willing to overlook that, but after showing the Wallace interview, he just devastated himself , people wondered out loud, if like Obama, they disagreed with Cain on an issue would he then play the race card on them too? Also having been for TARP and then hesitant on investigating the FED, how sure could they be that he wasn’t after all, willing to spend our money like a big government Republican? The race card was a deal breaker, all new polling coming out now doubtfully was taken before that statement and will also just as surely, later show a steep drop.
FTR, I am a Perry voter and will vote for him regardless (we are from Texas and have known and lived under his policies for years) , the majority of my tea party will do the same and believe they can’t trust a single word the media writes or utters(sadly FOX is now also in this category), short of Perry committing murder or a felony crime, all of these people will still vote for him. The same cannot be said about Romney- we hear an alarming amount of people stating(mostly the seniors) that they will not vote for him period. If there is a third party they will vote for that person instead . One elderly guy said very matter of factly to me,” If these young voters turn out to be fools and decide to go for ANOTHER greasy car salesman who will say anything to be elected then let them own it, I ain’t gonna live for ever and I will not vote for a non conservative, so if all that is left is a protest vote-so be it” I’ve said this many times, but IMHO, Romney cannot be elected in the South- he is pro/anti/pro/anti abortion and both he and his wife donated to Planned Parenthood,he is a decidedly anti-2nd amendment, big government, AGW believing, pro taxing and the real clincher is Romney care. Even selecting a Rubio or a southern VP will not save him with those stances. He has no chance whatsoever in our area. These meetings only solidify for me the feeling out here away from the D.C. beltway and metro areas.
So, regardless of the media narrative of Perry’s campaign crashing and burning, regardless of polls,etc-nothing has changed here except Cain’s favorable opinion. It is interesting that in spite of the polling and media stories, Mitt is STILL putting out attack ads and hit pieces on Perry-he shows who he really fears and knows Cain is indeed the flavor of the month. Cain is still my second choice, although he has really fallen in my eyes this past week. I hope he can redeem himself because he is for the most part a good decent guy who just does not have the political experience to avoid stepping into these media traps, he is in for some real on the job training.

Russ Martin (Diary) Tuesday, October 4th at 11:41AM EST (link)The title of your diary is a little misleading. I read it thinking you were going to jump on the anti-Perry bandwagon, but as a (current) Perry supporter, I enjoyed reading the feedback from your Tea Party group.
My personal take on the Perry campaign is that he needs to rehearse some 30 second soundbites on rebutting the immigration and Guardasil issues, and then use them to transition back on-message.
I also think he needs to stop attacking Romney. 75+% of primary voters don’t like Romney and are looking for a better alternative. They already see Romney for what he is. When Perry attacks Romney, he looks less Presidential and it takes him off what should be his most important message – jobs and the economy.
Lastly, Perry needs to focus on a positive, pro-growth message for the country. He needs to develop and communicate a plan to grow the economy and jobs, and talk about NOTHING else. The only reason voters will care what he did in Texas, is if he specifically details how he will do the same thing for the rest of the country.
Thanks again, for the feedback from your group. And thanks for your service. I spent some time at Benning in the early 80′s myself.

I also have to laugh at the naivete of the WAPO-”hunting camps?” nobody calls them that here, which tells me their “sources” are not from Texas, surprise surprise. No wonder they are also unaware of the use of the “racist” term that is applied to large outcropping of rocks for the old settlers! In Colorado there is a range of mountains called “Sangre de Cristo” which literally means ” Blood of Christ” funny how there is no outrage about that to the manscaped, waxed, highlighted hair, pantywaists at the Washington Post. As for the rock-n-word=Perry’s-a-racist thing, I’ve got to believe that most people realize that for what it is, a massive stretch made by the media to smear him. It is so absurd, it might actually have the opposite effect and create a little sympathy for him.

Mostly good policy positions vs. mostly bad debate performances
YnotNOW (Diary) Tuesday, October 4th at 12:15PM EST (link)So we need to determine which is more important, and I’ll come down on the side of policy every time. Not that the ability to debate is not significantly important. That ability to respond on your feet, not just in staged debates but throughout the campaign and (?) time in office, is a huge part of leadership. But some of that can be learned/improved (how quickly is up for debate) and it is more important to be moving in the right direction that in how effective you are in encouraging others to join your direction.
So I mostly agree with your TP group’s assessments.

As a Romney Supporter
Ryan Larsen (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 3:19AM EST (link)I respectfully disagree with the writer’s less than charitable assessment of the Governor.
These type of discussions tend to go in circles, so I’d like to focus in on one issue. The writer faulted Romney for believing in human caused global warming. I challenge the writer, or anyone in the writer’s behalf, to explain how and why they disagree with what Mitt said on the issue.
Before answering please read the following from WhyRomney.
Romney does not dispute the warming trend, however Romney does not blame this all on man and does not believe drastic measures are necessary or practical. Mitt Romney has consistently rejected “cap and trade” and all other actions which would hurt the economy. Instead, he favors other solutions such as expanding use of natural gas and nuclear power.
Romney does acknowledge that man is responsible for “some” warming, but is quick to state that we don’t know how much. Romney’s position is entirely accurate. Even if we set aside the question of greenhouse gases, the mere act of burning fossil fuels generates heat which otherwise would not be released. This is a relatively tiny amount of heat, but enough to have “some” effect. Similarly, man’s corresponding carbon emissions have “some” effect on warming, through the greenhouse effect. No one disputes that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas – not Glenn Beck, not Rush Limbaugh, not Mitt Romney. The dispute over global warming is not about whether man contributes to warming, but whether the amplification effect of that warming surpasses the earth’s moderating forces. For instance, the warming caused by man’s carbon emissions enables the atmosphere to hold slightly more water. Since water also acts as a greenhouse gas, this in turn creates slightly more warming which then allows even more water to be held in the atmosphere, which creates more warming and more water, in a repeating cycle. This is the amplifying effect which global warming enthusiasts, from Al Gore to Al Franken, believe is getting out of control. But climate is extremely complex and has many moderating factors which we don’t even understand.
No one knows how much the earth will moderate the amplification cycle. And that goes both ways. The climate scientists don’t know, the global warming enthusiasts don’t know, and the climate change skeptics don’t know. So, how can anyone criticize Mitt Romney’s observation that man is contributing “some” to global warming?
Until Romney’s critics can answer “how much?” they have no grounds for criticizing him.

Your candidate Romney
sunshinek67 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 6:54AM EST (link)got filthy rich, as did his investors, at Bain Capital while thousands of workers lost their jobs. Romneycare basis for Obamacare, is a jobskiller for MA and has drained the state treasury.
He is not a right to life candidate as his position has wavered over the years, and for me his unethical quest as Governor to pull the plug of life support on an 11 yr old girl that had been beaten into a coma is unconscionable. She revived amid his litigation, lives in a rehabilitation center. Had then Governor Romney had his way she would have dehydrated to death!
Romney is not a candidate for all people, as he has effectively chased away the Latino vote, a significant voting bloc this next election, with his pummeling of Perry over Texas instate tuition policy. He rants to America his ability to govern a border when in fact he has absolutely zero experience. Talks about illegal “magnets” giving tuition to kids on a path of higher education and citizenry simultaneously, while he employed undocumented Guatemalans in his past to manicure his rich expansive lawn. Scary to think of a President Romney representing the fastest growing ethnic group in America.
I’m on Team Perry. If for some reason my candidate, my Governor does not succeed in the nomination process I will be looking into third party candidates. Never had a situation where I refused to vote for a President. Romney is just that bad, no wonder he has trouble polling over 25%. In retrospect, I look at Governor Perry’s meteoric rise in a nano second as a superficial bubble that would have been of greater service to his ardent supporters had his introduction to the national stage projected on a more even keeled ascent.
You might have missed this
Ryan Larsen (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 2:10PM EST (link)I said, “These type of discussions tend to go in circles, so I’d like to focus in on one issue.”

Another problem with Mitt
kyconservative Wednesday, October 5th at 11:11AM EST (link)Another problem rank and file Republicans have with Romney is his elitism. Rick Perry or Herman Cain can relate to average, everyday people in a way Romney never can because of his upbringing. Romney was born into privilege, his dad a Governor. He grew up without ever having to rub shoulders with real people; went to Ivy League schools, then went into corporate finance and the rarified air of New York/Wall Street with all the bankers and business moguls.
This shows in lots of ways. Putting your dog on top of your car for a 12 hour drive? Most people think that’s strange, and maybe even a little cruel. Telling voters in Iowa that you understand them because “I’m unemployed too right now…” shows a total lack of a common touch. Doing deals on Wall Street, “restructurings” (i.e. where real people lose their jobs) doesn’t endear you to regular people. Just look at the ads Ted Kennedy ran against Mitt in 1994. The left will eviscerate Mitt for his elitism if we are stupid enough to nominate him.
The topic I'm addressing
Ryan Larsen (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 2:17PM EST (link)I realize your thoughts pertain to the diary entry above, but they do not pertain to the specific issue I’m addressing. I would like to discuss Mitt with you, however we can’t discuss everything at once.

Romney's environmental appointees now work for Obama
deVere Saturday, October 8th at 2:18AM EST (link)Romney may have moderated his global warming positions, but the bottom line is still that he has been badly mistaken in accepting this pseudo-scientific fraud, and Rick Perry has been exceptionally astute and brave in calling the global warming scam what it is.
It really is thought provoking to me that the Texas hick got it right and the Harvard trained lawyer and MBA couldn’t figure it out. I’m an Ivy League grad myself, but the truth is whatever it is.

I don’t like Herman Cain’s refusal to equivically support the Republican nominee and think that is the biggest issue of all out there for these four.
As for the gist of the article, Perry still MUST win a debate or at least not look horrible. Otherwise he will continue to slide and he will be the #3 guy and Cain will be the anti-Romney.

wonkish1 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 5:29AM EST (link)While I agree those expectations are in the toilet, but the bar for Perry has been moved from “not horrible” to at least a Santorum or old Bachmann performance if not slightly higher. That is doable, but will be a challenge.

Yes, this title is misleading but it got all of us to read it, right?
circlegranch Wednesday, October 5th at 6:59AM EST (link)Good to hear what the true heart and soul of America is saying these days about the top tier candidates instead of the drumbeat the media tells us we should be thinking and that includes FOX. After reading the article about Chris Wallace, et al, having a meeting prior to the FOX debate to discuss the strategy to take down Perry, and then in watching newscasts since, its clear they are in the tank for Romney just like MSNBC and CNN. Of course, the Leftie media wants Romney because, as Rush says, they know Obama can beat him. Are they really going to encourage us to vote for someone that will beat The Chosen One? Why FOX is signed on is a mystery but between Hannity frequently entertaining both Cain and Romney this week on both his shows, Dick Morris claiming he’s the only one that knows anything about campaigns and that he’s going with Romney, and then Ann Coulter, the self-appointed Queen of Conservatism out there gushing over a Romney -Cain ticket, the tea party message is a distant memory. The Perry supporters I know from TX say we ain’t seen nothin’ yet out of him. He knows how to campaign and how to win. Will that transfer out of the heart of TX and onto the nat’l stage? The debate next week will tell. But thus far, Romney has developed the “it’s my turn, damnit” attitude McCain had and unlike Perry, who has spent the last 5 years governing and getting his hands dirty, Romney has been donating to Congressional and Senate candidates and polishing his act. As for Cain, he’s a great man worthy of respect but he showed weakness on the stupid campground rock issue. If Perry were still No. 1 when that came up, I bet Cain would have sided in his favor but since Romney was at the top ,Cain pandered to him just in case he doesn’t make it to No.1 and he wants a Veep tap on the shoulder.
And, a final thought on Romney’s claim that Perry is a ‘career politician’ and he’s not. Romney has run and run and run for office, and lost all but one race. Had he in fact been elected all those times, he, too, would be a career politician. In analyzing both the Romney and Perry tactics thus far, its Romney that employs the dirty tricks, hateful personal attacks and sucker punches that only those true insider political campaigns know how to throw. Back in ’07, there was nothing too lowdown his camp didn’t bring up about Guiliani and McCain. Mr. High and Mighty was quick to bring up personal missteps and imperfections, as if he had none. Maybe that’s the brand of ‘love thy neighbor’ they teach in the Mormon church.
Rick Perry has presided over the world’s 4th largest economy, helped create the environment to attract 40% of all job growth since ’09 and S&P actually RAISED the TX credit rating based on economic stability. When he signed the TX budget in July 2011, it was a balanced budget and preserved the $6 billion Rainy Day Fund. Tort lawyers hate him. There’s a whole record about tough border security that hasn’t hit the press yet. Yesterday Bill Hemmer on FOX showed a US map depicting states with solvent economies and those in trouble. All but N. Dakota and Texas were in trouble. It’s amazing in a time of national fiscal crisis, Perry is the one dropping in the polls. He needs to man up and prepare for that debate next week and put his jobs plan out prior. He needs to frame every question back on Obama. Ignore Romney; he gets enough attention and fawning. Fight for America, Rick. In saving himself in this campaign, he may well be saving the nation.
Please...

Please don’t put a cheap shot like that in a post supporting Rick Perry. The rest of your post makes you sound reasonably intelligent. This statement, not so much.
Mitt Romney alone is personally responsible for the dirty-politics messages of his past failed campaigns. I hope the same fate befalls his present one.
Momma the scold
porkandcheese Thursday, October 6th at 3:56PM EST (link)Romney supporters went out of their way to blaim evangelicals for his loss in the 2008 presidential election. His stalking horse Cain has even been parroting this sentiment this time around, saying most southerners he knows won’t support a Mormon. My family never moved to Mexico to keep multiple wives. Though there are many reasons not to support Romney, don’t pretend it’s all his religion.

beach91 Wednesday, October 5th at 7:01AM EST (link)I had thought your article was about how Perry was really coming apart according to your title. A little misleading but I read it and it confirms for me the attitude toward Romney. I literally do not like the guy. He seems like a used car salesman that I would avoid like the plague. Others see this too. As Rush has said “..conservatism wins every time it is tried..” and I cannot understand why the establishment people will not adhere to this. I am also leaning toward Perry right now due to Cain’s statements last week and now this week about race.

It seems ridiculous to throw Herman Cain off the island
BA Cyclone (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 9:24AM EST (link)for half-heartedly criticizing Rick Perry, then later walking said lukewarm statements back…yet Rick Perry gets a pass for calling conservatives who disagree with his position on immigration “heartless” (which he also apologized for later).
The circular firing squad is inane and pointless. Herman Cain has a lot to offer conservatives and this presidential race, as does Rick Perry. The more we focus on minutia (which is what the left wants) the less chance conservatives will get the candidate we need in the White House.

Perry didn't gvet a free pass
bzip Wednesday, October 5th at 9:31AM EST (link)Perry took a big hit for using the heartless comment and he may never regain because of it.
On the other hand Cain has openly said he would not support Perry if he were the nominee (so I guess he wants Obama instead) and Cain supported Romney in 2008 and appears to be doing so now,
Somebody explain to me how Cain could be the Anti-Romney candidate.

BA Cyclone (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 9:43AM EST (link)in this blog post, and by many people on this site.
Polls…are polls.
Cain’s exact words re: Perry were something to the effect of “not right now”, not the truncation you are citing which implies he never would. I agree it is really bad form, but then this is again the minutia of insider politics. Do you seriously think Joe Voter honestly cares if Herman Cain supports Rick Perry for President?! ICYMI, Herman Cain is running for President himself.
Herman Cain supported Romney in 2008. So did Erick Erickson. So did I, to be honest. We didn’t have half the conservatism in that race that we do in 2011, you are comparing apples and bananas.
Herman Cain doesn’t support Romney any more than he supports Perry in 2011, he supports Herman Cain for president. How much simpler does he have to say it?
I seriously doubt Herman Cain or anyone else (well, maybe Ron Paul or Huntsman) will not support the eventual GOP nominee when that time comes.

Herbcain said he would not support Perry as the nomineeot listen to the interview
tyman Wednesday, October 5th at 10:26AM EST (link)I’ve listened to this over and over. The question that Wolf asked was would he support Gov. Perry WERE HE TO BE THE NOMINEE.
I can understand that. That means that the primary campaign is over, the convention is over and that there is a Republican nominee.
Cain responded with “Today (which is pointless based on the question), I could not support Gov. Perry for a host of reasons…”.
I’ll just say this again: yesterday, today, tomorrow, there isn’t a single issue that would prevent me from supporting Bozo the Clown over Barack Hussein Obama (mmm, mmm, mmm).
Now, if I would support Bozo, I would certainly support the EVENTUAL nominee, wouldn’t I?
What position does Gov. Perry have that is worth reelecting BHO (mmm, mmm, mmm)?
I know it’s hard to believe that Cain would say that, but he did. He would NOT support Perry if he was to win the nomination.
I would have supported Cain should Perry bow out up until that moment. If Perry gets out, I’lll support Newt.
Does anybody remember when Cain apologized to Muslims a few months back? I STILL don’t remember hearing Cain apologize to Perry and his family. If he’ll apologize to Muslims, I wonder why he won’t apologize to Perry.
If I were either of them,
Jim Tomasik (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 10:35AM EST (link)I would not be apologizing for a #!%* thing.
Clarifying maybe but not apologizing.
WaPo was trying to harm Perry's campaign and Cain
tyman Wednesday, October 5th at 10:41AM EST (link)by his ignorance, was a willing participant.
If someone told me something about you that wasn’t true based on what I heard from someone else, and it harmed you, you would rightfully expect an apology.
I believe Cain claims to be a Christian, and I believe that should take precedence over running for political office.
As I said, Cain apologized to Muslims, so it baffles me that he won’t apologize to Perry. I guess the Muslim apology was politically expedient.
If Cain has apologized to Perry, and I haven’t heard it, then *I* apologize.
who said anything about a free pass?
sayoung80913 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 10:41AM EST (link)I believe I stated that our group was aghast at the heartless comment. Most people hadn’t even watched the debate because it had already become apparent to most what the media’s intentions were. One of our group leaders is smarter than the media and immediately followed up controversial statements from the debate with interviews done right after. Hence our group members were able to see Perry(the next morning I think,I could be wrong without checking) explain in his OWN words and also apologize for the comment. So, NO, he didn’t get a free pass, I guess you had to have been there. However Cain(whom I also support) said he could not support Perry if he were the nominee-it was right there on the presentation, not “today” but if he were the nominee. people gave him a pass for that one. There will be no pass given-nor is it deserved for the rock controversy. Cain knows better and he went off of incomplete facts and assisted in smearing a fellow conservative as “racially insensitive.” Like Bachmann before, he did it for his own political gain and it was a BAD,BAD decision. He needs to come out right now with a heartfelt apology to Perry and turn his ire on the media(including the disgrace Wallace) for using him in the way they are. I don’t know how insensitive a man can be to not know the attitude of this country and how low on patience we are getting with the race card being played. Especially the tea party members who were just recently accused of it again. Cain was stupid to have gone along with the flow and that is a major ,critical flaw. He needs to get back immediately to being positive and campaigning against Obama and not participating in the media and Romney’s attempt at bringing down Perry or he will have no chance at all.

sayoung80913 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 10:51AM EST (link)interesting to watch but a dial, lol how arcane. Unfortunately, are there really any polling outfits left who don’t have some skin in the game? Not in my opinion. I laugh because polls are more often then not way off then way on. According to the polls ,Perry should have had a huge falling off in fund raising after that last debate , but instead his numbers and contributions actually rose. So are people willing to send their hard earned dollars to back a losing horse-I don’t think so. We’ll have to wait and see, but having myself been intentionally misquoted once by the Washington Post so they could prove a political point on Bush(in a story they later had to retract), I don’t put much faith in the media(ANY of it-FOX is especially suspect now) and use a bs filter on articles and blogs I read as well. Polls? interesting, but only a mere snapshot that might or might not show a trend, might or might not be slanted, and might or might not have any relevancy at all-so I’ll just keep on talking to the folks all around me and via the internet to gain my perspective-SOOO no need to rely on PPP or CBS/NYT to tell me what they derive- I’ll do it myself without their “helpful” assistance
Sayoung,
wonkish1 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 11:03AM EST (link)First, where have you read that Perry’s fundraising numbers actually rose after that debate?? The Q ended a week after that debate performance so I would be genuinely curious to see where in the he!! you came up with that.
Second, Luntz’s groups are useful because I like many other activists on sites like this are atypical of the average GOP primary voter. I don’t want to ever live in a bubble where I don’t know what average GOP voters think. While focus groups are definitely imperfect ways of doing that, they are way better than nothing. And polls only give you the “yes, no, this person vs. that person” where a focus group actually gives you more feedback.
And what were you quoted on for WaPo. Were you in the administration or something?

sayoung80913 (Diary) Thursday, October 6th at 9:46AM EST (link)In our group, someone came up with the idea(Brown election) that when we donate to campaigns, we should do it in amounts that make a statement, so we decided when we each individually donate to the candidate of our choice to do it in increments of $17.76. If i wanted to send $50, I’d just send 3 donations of $17.76 and so on. We all do it whenever we can (some campaigns have, or used to have preset donation amounts)and I wonder if any campaign officials scratch their heads at the amounts, but it would be funny if somewhere some campaign said, “you know we raised such and such amount, but the funny thing is it was in large part because of donations in a specific amount of $17.76.” I would laugh at the fake media trying to spin that one, but it’s just our way of having a little fun.
Time for Perry and others to take off clothes with Romney...
highlander1754 Wednesday, October 5th at 11:18AM EST (link)RINO Romney and his sidekick Tarp Cain have already weighed in on Perry and the “racist rock” issue. So what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
It’s time take off the gloves with draft-dodgers Romney and Cain. How about Romney getting racked over the coals for staying in a Church that did not allow blacks until 1978. Romney knew there were no blacks allowed in the Morman Church all the years he was a member and is still a member. I guess he thought racism in the Morman Church was right. I want to hear the media jump all over him about it. Perry can show up for dinner late and the media jumps all over it. How about those three heavens the Morman Church talks about? How does that sit with the majority of Christians in the country. How about God coming down to earth and having sex with Mary and Jesus being conceived in the old fashioned way. I want to see Romney asked all these questions. But I won’t hold my breath. I’ll just wait until tomorrow until the media can tell me what book about Robert E. Lee that Perry has been reading lately. Also why not ask Romney what he was doing during the Vietnam War years and ask Tarp Cain the same thing. Both are draft-dodgers. The only veterans running for president are Perry and Ron Paul. The others had “better things” to do than serve their country in uniform. Last but not least, rack him over the coals on RomneyCare and stay on him like a bulldog on a porkchop. Unless Perry, and the rest start attacking RINO Romney for his liberals ways they are giving him the nomination on a silver platter, exactly what Karl Rove and the Beltway boys want, and exactly what the liberal media wants because they know their liberal will have an easier time beating liberal-light than he will a conservative.
I hope you meant take off the gloves....

I was gonna say Aaron...
sayoung80913 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 11:35AM EST (link)that thought flashed through my head too, lol. Speaking solely for myself, I always have a very hard time voting for candidates that did not serve their country. I usually try to find out WHY and make an assessment from there. My reasoning is simple, how can I trust you with our precious soldiers, if you have never been one yourself? Can I trust your judgement at sending in troops, their security, their families if you have never known the gut wrenching feeling of knowing you or your loved one is literally on his/her way to battle? People who have served have usually LITERALLY been tested under extreme pressure, extreme circumstances, chaotic events. They are battle tested and better leaders (usually) because of it.I will go you one further and say that the U.S. should adopt Israel’s military policy, which is that EVERY SINGLE citizen must serve for two years (I believe), it doesn’t matter your age, your sex, your handicap, your monetary status- you have to serve your time. Got bad knees or a bad back-you can answer phones, or handle supply and logistics, women can be in finance or on the battle field. There are no excuses made. A hell of a lot of our young people desperately need the discipline a two year stint would provide. Think the U.S. sucks? Well now, we can fix that right up by sending you off to a third world nation for a tour of duty so you can see for yourself just how bad you’ve got it. Not sure if Romney or Cain were draft dodgers, but if that were the case, it is yet another fault to add to the list for Romney and another strike for Cain. Not saying someone who has never served can’t be president, it just makes me personally less likely to pull the lever for them.

Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

I found one article so far on Mitt
sayoung80913 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 12:52PM EST (link)it said this-”Mitt Romney, incredibly, was able to avoid serving in Vietnam because he was on his Mormon mission, driving around the French countryside. (The Mormon church defined missions — which all good young Mormon men go on — as a form of priesthood.) In fact, not one of Romney’s five sons has served in the military either, despite Mitt arguing for U.S. military involvement in Iraq and elsewhere.
Even more outrageously, when he was asked to justify this hypocrisy, Romney claimed that his sons were serving the country by driving Winnebagos around Iowa and campaigning for him.
sayyoung, from what I've read about the missions
Melody Warbington (rwm52) (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 1:10PM EST (link)they were quite a bit more than driving around the French countryside.
Voters have every right to consider whether or not candidates and/or their family members have served if that’s important to them. However, there are many fine citizens who have never served in the military. Personally, I give a candidate extra points for serving (like Perry), but I’m not going to hold it against those who didn’t, and I’m surely not going to bash a candidate for doing some mission work. Besides, there are too many other reasons not to support Romney.

Bachmann gets a pass, I guess.
naraht Wednesday, October 5th at 3:16PM EST (link)Theoretically, Michelle Bachmann could have served in Vietnam (She turned 18 in April 1974)
good point
sayoung80913 (Diary) Thursday, October 6th at 9:53AM EST (link)However, I never really planned to vote for Michele anyway because she lacks experience. The same issue I struggle with Cain on. One has no political experience and the other has political experience, but little of it. I did like and support Bachmann in some sort of cabinet position until the Gardisil issue-now she needs to take a clue from Palin,do the right thing and bow out gracefully. I see i may have a double standard regarding military service with women and their run for the presidency-thanks for pointing that out so I can reflect on it further. However, my own daughter is a soldier-a legal computer hacker for the military, so I can only say that both sexes benefit from serving their country, I regret bitterly not being allowed to join myself because of my severe asthma.
Underlying stability...
naraht Wednesday, October 5th at 11:28AM EST (link)What the MSM have really failed to pick up in significant measure is that in at least one respect the Republican primary is pretty stable. There are 25-30% of the republicans who find Mitt Romney to be best nominee out of those out there and the 65-70% of the population who finds him to be fairly unacceptable and probably worse than “None of the above”. Mitt Romney has almost 100% recognition, so this won’t change much (and I think Romney changing positions to try to appeal to that 65-70% will make him more of a flip-flopper than a conservative)
If the other 65-70% can find one candidate who they can feel confident about (be in Perry, Cain, Bachmann, Santorum, Palin, Gingrich or whoever) and can unify around then that candidate will take it and win the nomination
If, OTOH, Romney wins the nomination due to lack of unity on the other 65-70% then things change a lot. I really wonder how many of those 65-70% will put their heart and soul into getting Mitt Romney elected. (Note, this is different than putting their heart and soul into defeating Obama).
Romney complacency vs. Perry passion
tyman Wednesday, October 5th at 11:37AM EST (link)It’s one thing to have an inspiring candidate, and another who just shows up. It’s very easy to become complacent because Obama’s going down in flames and he’ll get elected anyway. WE NEED TO STAY ON GUARD AGAINST THIS!
That’s one (ONE!) of the fears I have should Romney gain the nomination.
I know Obama ran a feel good campaign in ’08, but McCain ran a terrible campaign and just did not inspire us to go vote.
One thing that Perry’s slip has shown is the loyalty and passion I have seen from his supporters on this and other sites.
Cain may have that now, but it took Perry falling for Cain to get it, and I think Perry will get it back.
You can't use 2008 as a model
clintonformccain Wednesday, October 5th at 2:00PM EST (link)The simple fact of the matter it would have taken a miracle for any Republican to win in 2008. The country was sick of George Bush and looking for a change.
Romney brings pluses and minuses to the race. What he gives up in red-meat base enthusiasm, he makes up for with competent technocrat appeal to independents.

tyman Wednesday, October 5th at 2:55PM EST (link)McCain simply did not work to earn people’s votes.
He did NOT fire up the base, and he certainly did not appeal to the evangelicals.
McCain never made really took Obama to task on so many things, and because of that, I think people became so hypnotized with Obama. He said so many things that have pointed to what he’s doing now, and I just wonder how folks were fooled by that (e.g., “we’ve got to spread the wealth around”).
I do agree that people were tired of Bush, but they needed someone to give them a reason to vote for them, and John McCain failed to do that.
Remember how the LSM told us that McCain supposedly could get the independents during the primary? That didn’t work out too well in ’08, and I’m not sure it will work with Romney (it may because now folks are really tired of Obama, but I’m just not convinced).
The LSM and Obama are saving their attacks on Romney should he get the nomination, and I think they’re wringing their hands for that to happen.
If I’m Obama and I want to face Romney, am I actually going to say things against Romney? No, that’s why they’re picking on Perry because they WANT to face Romney. I can hear Obama praising Romney for Romneycare in debates. It’s like Brer Rabbit saying, “Please don’t throw me in the briar patch!”

sunshinek67 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 11:40AM EST (link)25-30%? According to the average on RealClear Politics this morning Romney averages 21.6%, the highest number is 25% which he has been polling for 5 years now~
I do think Romney is at 25 to 35% max in the primary
Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 12:21PM EST (link)There have been a lot of establishment people on the side.
Figure that Romney is at 25%
Cain / Perry at 17.5% (helps my math)
Ron Paul at 10%
That totals up to 70%
So the rest of the field is 30% with Gingrich slightly above 5% and Bachmann slightly below.
Cain or Perry really need Gingrich / Bachmann out … if they do, I think that one of them will bounce into first and after that I think that person will be the anti-Romney.
Cain needs to get his butt off of his book tour and onto the campaign field especially in IOWA. If he tops IOWA, he kills Perry especially if Romney is second in Iowa.

Issues with the article
naraht Wednesday, October 5th at 4:40PM EST (link)1) Wendell Wilkie
The prior major party candidate that they describe as having no Military/Political experience is Wendell Wilkie, the Republican Candidate in 1940. However Wilkie *was* a Soldier in the US Army during World War I. He was trained as an Artillery officer and only got to France as the fighting ended. He was then (given his law school training) assigned to assist in Court Martial cases.
2) Herbert Hoover
Herbert Hoover never held elected Office (or military) before being elected President. He did however serve as Secretary of Commerce for almost all of Harding and Coolidge’s terms (1921-1928) (and before that under Wilson was the head of the US Food Administration). Whether that counts as Political Experience depends on your definition.

But in May, Cain was asked: “Do you think it’s legal to issue a shoot-to-kill order in [Awlaki's] case?”
“In his case, no, because he’s an American citizen,” Cain replied. “If he’s an American citizen, which is the big difference, then he should be charged, and he should be arrested and brought to justice.” Cain reiterated his opposition to killing Awlaki in an interview weeks later.”

sayoung80913 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 5:40PM EST (link)sorry to say it, but the format of his show changed over the last two years or so, around the time Obama was inaugurated. First off he has the slime Dick Morris on every week, whom I cannot stand and will not watch, and secondly his know it all tone has gotten to be grating. If someone will not come on his show, he holds a PERSONAL grudge and then goes negative. His show- his choice, but you’d be surprised how many tea party members will not tune into his, and lately,Hannity’s show anymore.Hannity especially, who constantly reminds his viewers and listeners that he is a member of the conservative party, continuously brings Mitt on . Cain is fine, but where is the balance Sean? He also pimps out Morris and even worse Rove. No thanks , character matters and Morris,Rove and Mitt have none. my husband said a while back that Mitt has a spine of steel sure, but it’s made up of a bunch of steel hinges that twist to and fro. On top of his hinged steel spine is a steel antennae so he can keep abreast of the current position on a topic and his spine can hinge back and forth in that direction. Sean has him on his show all the time , so he can’t be too good of a judge of character- add in the others mentioned and it amounts(for me) of watching HGTV or Chopped on Food Network rather than turning my dial to FOX.

Bill Kristol, even Hannity, all have pre-determined Perry isn’t going to be the nominee. Add in bar flies, Coulter, Morris and Malkin and Perry really doesn’t have any friends over there. He needs, instead, to go on with Limbaugh and Levin where he can get a fair shake–plus, the audience is probably bigger anyway.

Rick Perry Was Palling Around With Terrorists Who Tried to Kill George Bush

A hard hitting expose of Rick Perry palling around with terrorists. The shocking story of the man who would be president supporting terrorists who tried to kill George W Bush and Bill Clinton, plotted to murder American soldiers, tried to murder Texas cops, kidnapped innocents, and extorted BILLIONS.

Let's commit to vetting our candidates properly from now on
MojoMan (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 6:01PM EST (link)Let’s all commit to vetting our candidates properly from now on, before we go all gaga like many did here with Rick Perry. OK fellas?
Hopefully we have learned from this incident to not follow the atrocious example set by the Obama supporters back during 2008, when they ascribed all manner of ridiculous characteristics to BHO without any appreciable vetting or evaluation. That kind of behavior is as bad or worse when conservatives do it than when liberals do it.
No more leaping before looking (giving close and unhurried scrutiny) to new candidates. Fair enough?
MojoMan- Rick Perry
Scope (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 6:39PM EST (link)has been getting a thorough vetting here on Redstate since before he announced. All the positives and all of the possible negatives have been put under sunlight. No one that I know of was trying to shield him from any issue, and keep what some may perceive as weaknesses away from honest scrutiny. In fact there was a top rated diary here pointing out 18 possible arguments against him which included the Gardasil issue, his immigration positions and a host of other things that some may not support him because of There are still some Perry supporters here, who have looked at his record, and decided there wasn’t enough to throw him under the bus for, myself included.
Now it seems there are some that would love nothing more than to see everyone posting anything positive about Perry banned. I would love to see many of the other istas and bots banned as well, but that just isn’t how it works around these parts. Too each his own, and it’s still a free country, last time I checked anyway.

And some would not tolerate any negative remarks about Perry
MojoMan (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 7:01PM EST (link)I participated in some of the early discussions. For a while the most enthusiastic posters would tolerate no dissent about Perry’s conservative credentials and the desirability of having him as the Republican nominee. Apparently some people around here are already forgetting that now, only a few weeks after the fact.
If Perry is the nominee, I will enthusiastically support him. Likewise with Herman Cain, who is another candidate who has not yet been thoroughly vetted yet, but is currently quite popular. For that matter, I will enthusiastically support any of the Republican candidates after the nominee is chosen, with the possible exception of John Huntsman.
All I am saying is that we need to remember not to make the same mistake the Democrats did in 2008 when they nominated Obama without adequately vetting him first. I know the vetting process is ugly, but if a Republican candidate cannot take the heat from Republicans during the primary season, then they will not have a chance against the Dems in November 2012. Better to cut that candidate loose and pick someone else. And that applies to ALL of the current Republican candidates, bar none.
I'll go with that Mojo
Scope (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 7:08PM EST (link)As long as you agree that the every supporter of every candidate gets attacked by those supporting other candidates. It’s getting to the point here that when someone posts their “opinion” they get slammed for it, or asked to back up their opinion with facts. It is out of control.
I agree, Scope
MojoMan (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 7:38PM EST (link)There is room for a little more intellectual persuasion and a little less animosity between conservative posters around here.
Personally, I am remarkably detached from this particular primary season, probably due to a measure of ambivalence about the candidates and partially due to a lack of serious concern about the candidates.
Obama has to go and any one of these candidates would be better than him hands down. But none of the Republican candidates has succeeded in inspiring me the way I would like. However, we have to choose between the candidates in the race, and not between mythical candidates not running.
Considering the field we are working with here, the animosity between conservatives on this website seems to be grandly overdone and unnecessary.
Perry is hardly a 'new candidate'
circlegranch Wednesday, October 5th at 7:21PM EST (link)The man that has held 3 terms as gov in TX, a very red state, is hardly new to the arena. To compare Rick Perry’s experience to Obama’s non-experience is naive at best. The problem with thinking Perry wasn’t vetted is that the media has lined up against him, fueled by Romney and Paul campaigns and you aren’t hearing about his record or accomplishments. He spends his press time dodging swords. You’re right, we do need to vet our candidates. I suggest you do some homework on Rick Perry, starting with the list of bills he signed this past July at the end of the legislative session. By the way, the budget for ’12-’13 he signed into law at the same time is a balanced budget and does not touch Texas’ $6 billion Rainy Day Fund. Like the military? So does Perry so read up on the bills he just signed that gives them alot of support. Does your state require photo ID to vote? If you’re a Texan, Perry just signed a bill requiring it for you. Would an extension of tax exemptions for small business help create jobs in your state? Perry just signed a bill on that also. Are you in favor of property rights and restricting eminent domain? Move to Texas; Perry just signed a bill on that one. Did you favor the Balanced Budget Amendment? So did Perry; that’s why he signed a bill calling on the US Congress to pass it. S&P may not be confident in the US economy, but in ’09, they raised the credit rating in Texas. Vetting? Indeed.
I have lived in Texas all my life, Circlegranch.
MojoMan (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 7:46PM EST (link)I have lived in Texas all my life, Circlegranch. It is because of this that I knew that Perry was not the rock solid conservative that many around here did before most of the people on this website.
As I said before, Perry is not a bad guy and I will support him enthusiastically if he is the Republican nominee, as he is hands down superior to Barack Obama. I am personally proud of Rick Perry’s stance on the budget this year and also on his rejection of education funds, together with the strings that Obama attached to them. He has done some good things here in Texas. But even still, Rick Perry is very certainly a flawed candidate who is very possibly not the best nominee that the Republican party can produce this cycle.
I appreciate your passion, but I need you to realize that I did not drink the Rick Perry Kool-aid here when it was being passed around here on this website early last month. If that is upsetting to you, then all I can say is I am sorry you feel that way.
Who would be a better nominee?
porkandcheese Thursday, October 6th at 4:20PM EST (link)Of the declared candidates, mind you. If John Thune were to run, I would switch my support over to him pronto. But the field as it stands is a bunch of also-rans.
Is there such a thing as a rock solid conservative?
cjf99b Friday, October 7th at 2:40AM EST (link)Talk about a political misnomer. I think we are looking for something that doesn’t exist. I’ve watched Perry for the last 10 years and nothing he’s done has ever got me riled up like say, Rick Santorum. We have our share of crazy libs to be sure, but TX is still a conservative state, and Rick Perry is most certainly a conservative Governor. There are a few policies that you have to drill down and look at context behind them. That is to be expected over a 10 year term. I find myself defending a couple of his decisions that I’m not crazy about bc the attacks on him are so inaccurate. It makes me research the issue even further and I find myself actually agreeing with his position after all. As far as Romney goes, he pisses me off more each day by using the DNC playbook against Perry on Social Security (He’s now using Medicare) As far as border security, Perry is by far the most qualified on that stage. Watch, they will end up looking like a bunch of asses, especially Romney, Bachman and Santorum.
Hannity....
highlander1754 Wednesday, October 5th at 6:05PM EST (link)Hannity is a shill for the republican party. But he is more balanced than O’Reilly, who just hollers and interrupts people when he can’t get his way. I can remember a Catholic priest taking Hannity to task a few years ago. The discussion was about the use of birth control. Hannity said he was all for it. The Catholic priest righly told Hannity that he was going against his church’s teaching. Hannity said he was a devout Catholic and didn’t appreciate being told he was going against the church. The conversation got no-where, as Hannity started trying to change the subject by telling the priest he should be concerned with “all the sexual allegations” against the Church. The priest would not let him off the hook and told him not to try and change the subject. Hannity sounded just like a liberal blasting the Catholic Church for it’s conservative theology. The priest in question was never seen again on Hannity’s show.
By the way he does not like Ron Paul, but likes Rand Paul. I don’t guess Hannity realizes father and son’s politics are almost identical. The only difference is the son has not been around for years and is not running for president.
I disagree
kyle8 (Diary) Wednesday, October 5th at 6:48PM EST (link)Well I do not disagree that O’Reilly is a bully. But I always try to watch his show and rarely watch Hannity.
Hannity preaches to the choir and is jut too much of a partisan. So that even though I mostly agree with him, it is boring.
O’Reilly, on the other hand, even though he has some populist sentiments and is a bit brusque. Is always informative, and entertaining.

Perry raised 17 million ?
californiagold Wednesday, October 5th at 11:52PM EST (link)That pretty much suggests to me that Perry is in this race for the long haul. Reports suggest that Perry has 15 million in the bank, which means he’s been very frugal with the money he has raised thus far.
If you live in Florida, Iowa, or Nevada, you’ll be seeing lots and lots of Perry ads in the next couple of months.
If Perry can have at least one decent debate performance to match his fundraising skills, he just might leap back into the frontrunner position.

Scope (Diary) Thursday, October 6th at 12:57AM EST (link)I don’t look for Perry to have any good debate performance’s. It is not his best forum or forte. sayoung80913 (Diary) Thursday, October 6th at 10:01AM EST (link)Why not use the new media to moderate debates? Why not a radio host or an Erick Ericson? Perry will never have a good debate as long as WAPO and their ilk have a say in the questions. That is their intention-to get him on the defensive and urge the others to pounce so they can make headlines and “drive the narrative.” I am pleased to read that they boycotted one already because of how Rubio was treated, they need to boycott this Bloomberg one as well since they decided to change the format. With Perry being supposedly in 3rd place that would mean if we follow the pattern, that the media and others will pounce on Cain and try to rip HIM apart, but you just watch, they will pounce on Perry instead. Why? Because everyone knows Cain is going no where and a lot of this hype being reported in polls and articles is journolist(tm) driven. It is not translating down to fund raising which should be a big red flag, but they’ll run with it regardless and try to destroy him like they did with Palin.
I wish the candidates would actually have a real debate just once...

californiagold Friday, October 7th at 11:55PM EST (link)If one of these candidates were smart, he/she would ignore the debates, and get a twenty minute interview for themselves on a competing station while the debate in on the air. They might take heat from the other candidates for not showing up, but the amount of free air time would make up for it.
Absolutely...
mtbrimstone Saturday, October 8th at 12:17AM EST (link)After what Bloomberg/WaPo just pulled (by changing the format of the upcoming debate from strictly about the economy, as advertised, to the 1st hour about the economy and opening up the 2nd to other topics), I wouldn’t blame them.

Governing is diffrent from Posturing
gregorysstewart (Diary) Thursday, October 6th at 10:52AM EST (link)I am not against Perry’s position on Guardasil. Sure, he should have worked with the legislature, and he admits that was wrong. He has been governor for a long time. There will be mistakes, because he is human.
The opt-out instead of an opt-in was a practical decision that allowed insurance companies to pick up the cost.
I am not against Perry’s stand on in state tuition. Sure I hate it. I hate that it looks smells and feels like an incentive for illegal activity, BUT Governing is very different than posturing, and Perry was governing. Four legislators voted against it. In Texas, that law would have gone foward over a veto in any case. When you are governing, you have to learn how to pick your battles.
In Texas, Hispanics are the single largest minority, and you cannot win elections without them. Picking a fight you would lose with this voting block is beyond silly. In a national election, this is also true. First we need the keys to the oval office before we make policy.
I am however against Perry’s inability to articulate these arguments. We are a year away from potentially having both houses of congress and the presidency. If Perry cannot do better in the debates, he will be leaving that 10% who make their minds up at the last second, and as a result of the debates to Obama. That will leave us with more disfunction, more costly government, a corrupt justice department, more post-constitutional Supremes, more class warfare and a shrinking national presige.
That is simply not acceptable. I will not support any candidate who cannot win.
Now that Perry has 15 million in the bank I urge him to get off the campaign trail, and do the hard work that it will take to make him polished and sharp in the upcoming debate. It is no exaggeration to say it will be his last chance.
Perry was recovering from back surgery
avagreen Thursday, October 6th at 4:51PM EST (link)in July from a problem with one of his disks ,when he entered the race, which is why he was so late in running. This issue has been left out by the talking heads of the MSM and Fox, conveniently.
He’d been in a back brace just weeks prior to the debate and from what I’ve read from posers who had the same surgery, he was still in the recovery period in which standing for 2 hrs was just plain pure torture. One of the posters said they shook his hand after the last debate and his hand was ice cold and trembling. The man was in pain!
One said he probs took a pain med toward the end, and was probably the reason for his garbled message about some issue (can’t remember). I’m thinking about Santorum’s inyourface rant about the fence. To see a man in pain: Look at the pic at the top of this article. http://blog.chron.com/rickperry/2011/09/perry-to-critics-country-doesnt-need-smoothest-debater/
BTW, concerning FOX, Ailes decided about 6 mos ago to go “moderate” to get more viewers, which I’d noticed but did not know why until I read an article about Ailes. I’ve written nasty letters to all the folks at FOX, as if that will help. We don’t need a national new organization when we have the net.
Rick Perry STILL! doesn’t have or need blood. He is filled with magma.
