Brokaw Gets Tough with Obama

So President-elect Obama goes on with Tom Brokaw to talk about his coming presidency.  And our boy Tom, decided that it was time to drop the gloves and put Obama’s feet to the fire.  So what topic did Tenacious Tom use as a rhetorical cudgel to batter the President-elect.

The lie of tax cuts for 95% of the American people when 40% don’t pay taxes?  No.  How about changing his mind on many of the Bush policies on the war on terror? No.  Maybe, just maybe, did Tommy go after one of the taboo subjects like Reverend Wright or Bill Ayres or Spreading the Wealth? Nope.

Tommy went after the fact that Obama said he had given up smoking but really hadn’t.  And Tommy was tenacious.  Sweat formed on the President-elect’s upper lip as he faced the whithering questioning about this most important topic for all Americans.  In fact, Barack started to get that look Nixon had in his eyes when he was questioned about the Watergate break-in.

Who said that the media was going easy on Barack?

Some thoughts on Prop 8 and Gay Marriage

An East Coast Roman Catholic perspective

Since the election the Prop 8 passage has been a major item on news broadcasts and the internet. We have seen protests at Mormon and Catholic houses of worship (but not in predominately black and hispanic neighborhoods, which Larry Elder attributes to the lack of a possibility of confrontation at the LDS and RC churches) and we have heard a variety of talking heads and opinionated celebrities rage against the voice of the people. And in all cases the support for Prop 8 is blamed on the inherent bigotry of white churches. I propose that the gay activists, talking heads and celebrities consider this.

Correcting the Early Missteps

A thought on working towards winning in 2010 and beyond

This morning I tuned into the 2nd hour of the Mike Gallagher show on WNYM in New York. The topic turned out to be about an article, by whom I know not, that questioned why Barack Obama would not be attending his grandmothers funeral. Mike referred to a few possibile reasons and inevitably an Obama supporter called in claiming that the host was sarcastically attacking Obama and insulting the memory of his grandmother. Needless to say, the cringe factor on my part was enormous. When I got home I wrote an e-mail to Mike and I will go into greater detail here about what I suggested.

If conservatives republicans are to rebuild our party to truly represent us and to take on the left in subsequent elections, we need to avoid personal issues. Especially in the case of the President-elect as it appears that any slight or disagreement will be referred to as a mean-spirited attack that is tinged with racism. This is not how to rebuild a party of ideas. We must all agree that the personal life of the president-elect and of democratic leaders are off limits UNLESS their personal decisions will have any import into their political decisions.
