Today’s Census mailing – Waste of tax money by executive branch

I’m sure you all have seen the ads from Census 2010. It’s well known that every 10 years, we have the census. Soon the forms will be coming to be filled out.  I checked my mailbox and thought it came in today. Nope.

Instead, I got a $0.44 first class mail telling me the census form will be in approximately one week from today. Thanks a lot. This is a major waste of my tax money. Anybody that is familiar with the costs of political campaigns knows how much mailings cost. This one is no different except that it is at our expense. There are about 110,000,000 households in the US. This .44 mailing adds up. About $48 million in postage alone. That doesn’t include about 110,000,000 envelopes, sheets of paper, laser printer depreciation, toners, and labor for that gigantic mailing.

I’ll give it one credit. It was quick. It was addressed from Phoenix yesterday, and I got it today here in Green Oak Township, Michigan.

Other than that, this was a gigantic waste. They should have saved the $50 million plus and just sent the actual census form instead of the one week warning.

This is just one more example why people don’t trust Washington DC with their money. $50 million here, $50 million there. Pretty soon, it’s up to 13 trillion.

Only Answer # of People in your house

The Census was to be used to determine Representation in Congress and to determine if your territory had enough people to become a state.

This racial profiling that goes on in the Census is just to divide Americans, they don’t need to know details of your home, how much money you make, your educational status, how far you travel to work?

All of these questions are for the socialists and progressives/regressives to get info on the population to centrally plan everyone’s life which is unconstitutional.

A year or so ago, I was randomly selected for some type of Census Dept. survey

SoFiMil (Diary) Tuesday, March 9th at 11:52PM EST (link)

that asked how many toliets I had, my income, eduation level, etc. It also asked for my race/ethnicity. That race/ethnicity question was the only question I didn’t answer – I just left it blank.

If I remember correctly, there wasn’t a “decline to state” box. A month or so later, I get a call from the Census (yes, I put my phone #), asking me for my race/ethnicity for the survey I had accidently left out. I told them it wasn’t a mistake, and that I wasn’t going to answer that question. They asked me one more time, and I told them agian that I wasn’t going to asnwer that question.

The Census gently pressed me, but didin’t make too big a deal about it after they realized I wasn’t going to answer that question.

Not to mention the poor trees.

I care more about the money wasted, but if the tree huggers want to join this coalition, they’ll be welcomed.

I have to disagree with this criticism of the census

civil truth (Diary) Wednesday, March 10th at 1:19AM EST (link)

Actually, it seems like a reasonable idea – given how much unsolicited mail people get, and the fraudulent mail that pretends to be official government mail, this letter seems like a good idea to alert people that the real Census form is coming soon so that they will be on the lookout for it and not throw it out thinking it’s junk.

The census bureau rightly tries to get back as many returns the first time so that they minimize the number of address visits they will have to make. This fits in with that effort. Cost-effectiveness is a concern, but I don’t see a way to definitively assess that. So I’m willing to defer to the census management on this one.

Rather than gripe over nonessentials, let’s keep the powder dry for likely malfeisance that lurks ahead as they get more deeply into the actual enumerations

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis
