Last week, President Obama signed into law the Democrats’ trillion-dollar health care takeover, meaning that one-sixth of the United States economy has now come under the purview of the federal government. This reckless bill will only further burden our already struggling economic sector, and we’re already seeing proof of that as companies like Caterpillar and AT&T are announcing the financial blow this bill will take on their bottom line. Punishing businesses is not what we want with unemployment sitting around 10%.
We can’t waste any time in repealing this bill, and I have already introduced legislation in the House that would repeal it completely.
Keep in mind Arizona State economics professor William Boyes has estimated that the government already owns or controls about one-third of U.S. economic activity through the takeover of General Motors, the bankruptcy reorganization of Chrysler, the partial ownership of two of the country’s largest banks in Bank of America and Citigroup, and the seizure of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as AIG.
Taken all together, and we’re looking at half of the American economy in the grip of the federal government.
Now is, to borrow a phrase from Ronald Reagan, a time for choosing; and this is not the direction I would choose to be heading.
After all, we cannot have political liberty without economic liberty or economic liberty without political liberty. Yet, the ever-escalating series of failed government bailouts and so-called stimulus packages is the greatest threat to economic liberty we have faced in generations.
Now is the time for choosing. Yes, we do need dramatic action to move us from this recession. We need regulatory overhaul; free market reforms; deep, permanent tax cuts. But we don’t need growth of government spending and government intrusion. This growing effort to nationalize our banking sector and put America’s middle class on welfare – all in the guise of an economic rescue plan – may permanently erode our freedoms. Of course, these policies will do nothing to spur economic growth. In fact, they will serve only as on obstacle to actual recovery and smother the spirit of innovation and freedoms that made this country great.
Unfortunately, we have not learned from past mistakes and are faced with the time of choosing as to whether this flood of government spending and control becomes an unstoppable deluge, or whether we are able to stem the tide and to save the American people from living under a permanent regime of bigger and bigger government.
Now is a time for choosing. Between free markets and government control. Between individual choice and state fiat. Between the liberties our founders intended for us or a new era of bureaucratic tyranny.
The price of liberty, it is said, is eternal vigilance. And together, we must choose to carry that diligence to eternity.

paralysis of the invisible hand
horseshowfreak Monday, March 29th at 7:31PM EST (link)that’s a lot of our economy, so what can we do to privatize our economy? i know a large part of what gw bush tried to do in iraq was privatize the military (a huge part of the federal government — and yes I SUPPORT THE TROOPS) — but that ended up costing more money than just recruiting pimply faced teenagers in the traditional socialist government-sponsored way. similarly, the recent government takeover of student loans, though it is a takeover, is actually going to cost the government less than the weird hybrid student loan system that used to exist. and our weird medical system, which, despite obamacare, is still largely private, costs the us government as much per capita as the fully-socialized schemes in britain (though of course they have a terrible system that would make mao and mussolini proud). so the question is — can we do SMART privatization that doesn’t end up just costing more money? i’m all for it, but if it’s some messed-up hybrid scheme that just makes fat cats rich while failing to deliver the goods, perhaps adam smith’s invisible hand is paralyzed.
The Invisible Hand is always paralyzed
davesinsanantonio (Diary) Tuesday, March 30th at 9:42AM EST (link)when the government tries to regulate or manipulate it. That was one of the fundamentals that Adam Smith warned us of. To truly work, the Invisible Hand must be allowed to work in an environment free from fetters or “nudges” that always upset the market forces, which will work automatically if left alone. Hence the term laissez-faire. It is only when the government tries to control what cannot be controlled that the system breaks down.
"...the recent government takeover..."
edintexas Tuesday, March 30th at 10:07AM EST (link)“…the recent government takeover of student loans, though it is a takeover, is actually going to cost the government less…”.
You actually believe that? You have no memory of the mess the Dept of Education made of the Student Loan Program (particularly collection efforts) prior to the privatization of it by the Reagan Administration? It was “common knowledge” that young people need not bother to repay the loan, the government couldn’t collect their rear with both hands.
Not to mention that the costs the government is avoiding is the intentional subsidizing of the loans. Would private companies lend if the government didn’t subsidize the loans? Yes, if they can make money, they will. Will students obtain loans to attend higher education institutions without subsidy? Many would, some would not be a sufficiently good credit risk to be able to afford the interest rate caused by a low credit rating. Few would not need a loan with the costs of higher education these days.
Great job Rep. Bachmann

If there are not any willing Dem conservatives, weed out the “wheat from the tears” in the GOP and set aside the RINOs or “swishy republicans” with them. What is the GOP House members true and significant plan to “win the hearts and minds of independent voters” in Nov. 2010? I know it can’t be revealed too soon, but I pary there will be a sensible and viable plan as there was in 1994. Truth is power. No spin, just the truthful facts to get us to rally around. The conservative movement needs strong, young, dedicated, honest and fearless candidates to win and represent us in the House. Some candidates who when they win are immediately ready to stand up and repeal the Obamacare crap and put this country on sound financial footing. Forget replacing Healthcare. We need a strong and sound dollar currency, jobs, jobs, jobs. No more funding for National Endowment for the Arts; Acorn; ACLU; and not pay the legal fees for the environmental whackoos who constantly sue the U.S. to stop energy development. There are too many funds for studies, etc. which do not do a damn thing except benefit a few at the expense of the many and it has to stop! Repeal won't happen?
weatherford Tuesday, March 30th at 12:38AM EST (link)To my knowledge, no one is contending that repeal is likely before its opponents are crushed in November, yet, even on this site, someone always feels compelled to point out today’s vote count — and always as if it means that the champions of repeal should just drop the issue.
That is absurd,
The day after Pearl Harbor smoldered in ruins, Admiral Ernest King, our Chief of Naval Operations, did not say, “We’re outnumbered.” No, he said, “We need more ships and planes; WE WILL WIN THROUGH IN TIME.”
“Repeal” is a battle cry. It marks a clear objective. And it calls forth the fighting spirit and the tenacity we are going to need to win.
If our bravest leader, Michele Bachmann, says “Follow me,” I will.
Thank you Ms. Bachman
mikerazar (Diary) Monday, March 29th at 11:41PM EST (link)But this is no time for fawning praise. Let’s face it. the GOP did a terrible job of exposing all the bad things in a nearly 3000 page bill. Over and over, the other side called us liars.
I heard almost nothing about IMAB. You (not you personally, but the leadership in general) barely connected IMAB and QALY to expose the REAL death panel, not the leftist spin on end of life counseling.
The true numbers were never brought out. Why was there no line by line refutation of the flawed CBO projections. All I heard was “ten years of taxes and six years of outlays”. That barely scratched the surface.
Simple idea: If the Democrats think the big bad insurance companies are gouging us, why not create some mutual companies, which by definition, can’t cheat their policy holders?
How about a govt. subsidized catastrophic insurance umbrella? Insure the insurance companies against the worst cases. It could be structured like the FDIC or flood plain insurance.
Then just insist that “once insured, always insured”, with no lifetime cap. No cancellations due to illness. Even if originally insured through a job, the policy should belong to the individual.
Policies should be written in plain English, with fast arbitration available for denied claims.
End discriminatory taxation for self-employed taxpayers.
Seems like you could do all this in fifty pages. It kills me when I hear talking points like “The American people like the 26 year old coverage and the no pre-existing conditions rule. Where is a Republican counterpoint like “What is in the OTHER 2700 pages?”
Don’t get me wrong Congresswoman Bachman. You are one of the best. But you have to do even better.

It is a compliment to the Congresswoman that she is capable of tearing it down issue by issue. I remain disappointed that she and her colleagues didn’t do a better job of it.
Slogans are great. Like “change you can believe in”. If McCain had asked Obama to name the things he planned to change during a debate, he might have had a shot. You can’t go around shouting “repeal” if you can’t explain the bad things in the law because your opponent will counter by pointing to the seemingly good things.
There is way too much at stake here to substitute cheering for constructive criticism. I am confident that Ms. Bachmann agrees.
Fiery speeches at Tea party events are terrific, but you also need hard work on policy issues to win this fight.

Repeal would be nice,but!
loveformycountry2010 Tuesday, March 30th at 8:24AM EST (link)We have a slight problem it’s called the veto pen of Obama, we have senators who like parts of this bill in our party, Rep Bachmann. We still need two thirds majorities and they would all have to vote lock step just like the democrats, and even if we win big even bigger than 94 to get to those numbers we need. I think the best thing is to Waite until Obama beaten in a landslide in 2012, then in 2013 then repeal it.
Defeatists are dangerous.
weatherford Tuesday, March 30th at 8:59AM EST (link)I respectfully ask the management to take a look at this problem.
I see no defeatism here.
mikerazar (Diary) Tuesday, March 30th at 9:13AM EST (link)Realism is always appropriate. We can defund the law next year if the elections go our way in November. To count on full repeal being possible before 2013 is just silly.
Meanwhile maybe we can learn from our mistakes on the health bill and block cap and trade and amnesty.
We have a nation to save, people.
Realism, in political action, does not involve a keen instinct for the capillaries.
weatherford Tuesday, March 30th at 11:25PM EST (link)It involves a concise and clear objective without excessive focus on incremental success that will occur naturally along the path to the final goal.
Right now, it is crucial to November and to 2012 to keep constantly before the electorate an unmuddled message. If it is not done in gross, defeat will come in detail. If it is done in gross, the details will get handled along the way, and the overiding theme will keep the main attack focused and driving forward with building momentum.
There is a reason Senator Graham says Amnesty is dead. That reason is readily apparent. The outcry for HCR repeal is already causing casualties.
Our opponents may posture as victorious, but they are sick with fear at our response. Why? Because they have sown the wind and are now reaping a whirlwind. And the banner of repeal, if held on high, will transform a whirlwind into a tornado.
Now that the havoc is being done, why stop? We are not RINOs.
Accommodation with defeat can have no place here.

dwscho Tuesday, March 30th at 10:45AM EST (link)Congresswoman Bachmann, Your’re doing an outstanding job standing up and fighting for our Constitution and our principles. Unfortunately, the Republican leadership in Congress is so weak. Also, many of the Republicans serving in Congress do not share our consrvative values. That, plus the fact the party is in the minority will make repeal virtually impossible in this session.
We need a complete overhaul in Congress including many Republicans. That’s what we need to focus on, throwing the liberals of both parties out of their seats and voting in true conservatives.
You are doing an outstanding job. Perhaps, your peers will listen to you and mend their ways. It’s highly doubtful but, I suppose possible. Tell them to get on board or face the voters wrath in November.

martinrocket Tuesday, March 30th at 10:47AM EST (link)I wish that Rep. Bachmann would spend more time developing the Republican platform rather than wasting time on repealing something that won’t/can’t be repealed. Democrats did what they said they were going to do, they delivered on their platform. I’d rather see Republican leadership deliver on their platform, FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY. Please, bring back pay-as-you-go. Sponsor something that will win not only win the hearts and minds, but give America financial strength.
You are right to say Fiscal Responsibility is very important.
weatherford Wednesday, March 31st at 12:39AM EST (link)The problem seems to me that the outyear expenses of HCR will make fiscal responsibility very difficult to achieve. I can be done, but it appears that the monstrous negative effect of HCR on the sovereign debt of our country will move out of our reach the very worthy goal you bring back to our attention.
Your focus on the platform is also a needed reminder of the importance of that document in setting the parameters of permitted movement within the ranks of the GOP. As you urge, a primary message in the platform should be fiscal responsiblity, and its corollary should be a reversal of the enormous fiscal damage done by the Obama Regime.
Obviously I dont know, but I think Representative Bachmann’s focus on HCR repeal is in very large measure directly derived for her own desire for fiscal responsibility, an outcome that HCR repeal would make feasible.

4liberty (Diary) Tuesday, March 30th at 12:22PM EST (link)A couple of days ago, I wrote a post called “Hold the Line” , which is a reference to a line the climactic scene in “The Patriot,” where the Colonial militia’s front line begins to falter and retreat from the British is underway, Seeing the militia’s resolve slipping, Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) seizes the American flag and rushes to the front line screaming, “Hold the line!” The boldness of his brave leadership in the face of looming defeat was the catalyst the discouraged militia needed to press on. “We can prevail, but victory will require brave, principled, bold leadership from the Conservatives in Republican Party. The citizens of this great Republic are thirsty for leaders we can believe in and who can boldly lead in the face of defeat. We need our leaders to signal that they are confident of victory and the American people will follow.”
In retrospect, I should have entitled it “An Appeal to GOP Leadership: What The People Need to Hear From You,” to maximize the chances of it being read by the people for whom it was intended. I may repost it under that title, if that’s permitted.
What you speak of in your post here exemplifies the resolve we need to see in our GOP leaders. We need more of it more often across the board. Thank you for leading the charge!
