For the past two days, the Energy and Commerce Committee has been marking up the Waxman-Markey “Cap-and-Trade” bill. It will impose a huge, new cost on all energy (estimated at $4,300 per family each year) and destroy millions of American jobs.
While the price of everything will go up, the effect on electricity prices will be particularly dramatic. Last night, Republicans put forward a straightforward amendment to require that utility bills indicate the increased cost of electricity that will result from this legislation. The Democrat majority on the Committee rejected this commonsense measure. That’s right: they actually voted against disclosing these costs to consumers on their utility bills!
Today, in another partisan vote, the Democrats have added an amendment to essentially require every new and existing home sold in America to be inspected and labeled as to its energy efficiency. If you thought the emissions tests required by the DMV were a pain, just wait to have your home inspected and “labeled.” In addition, on a party-line vote, the Majority has included a mandated study on requiring all products sold in the United States, down to potato chips, to be labeled as to their CO2 “content,” showing how much CO2 is emitted in the manufacturing of each product. If you think government is big now, get ready for it to be stunningly bigger and more invasive!

Praying (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 8:50PM EST (link)is a hoax? Oh yeah, I forgot. Being a democrat means never having to say you are sorry… or that you are wrong. But they are. This is such a joke it is totally embarrassing. And it is equally embarrassing to see how many otherwise intelligent people have bought into this myth. But apparently that number is declining. Rapidly.

MASSIVE GLOBAL WARMING TAX to remain stealthy
izoneguy (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 8:55PM EST (link)?
How will they do that when people get electric bills that are double & triple what they have been paying?
Every electric company will have to hire more customer service people to handle the calls. If I owned an electric company I would be running full page newspaper ads and change the splash page on my website that would say this:
Hello Electric Customer,
By now you have received you first bill after the GLOBAL WARMING TAX has been imposed. Our company must now buy Carbon Credits at tremendous cost. If you would like to learn more about why your electric rates are now through the roof contact your congressman or Senator and they can explain it to you.
If your congressman or Senator voted for this MASSIVE GLOBAL WARMING TAX then please let them know how you feel on election day.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Our Utility Bills in Arizona
Rapunzel46 Thursday, May 21st at 1:01AM EST (link)are already astronomical… I wish Congressman Shadegg would run for the senate, because our senator up for re-election buys into the global warming stuff.

DerKrieger (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 9:10PM EST (link)There is nothing preventing utilities from putting this on their bills themselves. Congress just voted not to mandate it. Cowards. Disgusting.

I think
sdan (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 10:47PM EST (link)that the utility companies will do just that to avoid the backlash of their customers. It will their way of saying don’t blame us we didn’t put this on the American people blame Congress. This is another bill the Republicans need to keep their hands off of completely. Don’t let it pass with any help from across the aisle.

I have piece of property with a vacant home I am eventually tearing down to build. Electric, gas, water are disconnected but I get a $50/month water bill from city. I call about it and tell them I am disconnected and vacant. They said it doesn’t matter, its a minimum charge. LOL

My Water Company Nightmare ...
Blue_Collar_Muse (Diary) Wednesday, May 20th at 11:49PM EST (link)10 years ago when we sold our home, we sold it through a realtor. We had to answer a bunch of questions about the property, including “Is your house connected to the city sewer?”
We bought the house from the owner directly and had never thought to ask about it. We paid a sewer bill every month for the 11 years we lived there – of course we were on the sewer.
6 months after we moved, the single mom who bought the house called in tears. The house was NOT on the sewer but still used a septic tank.
When I called the water company – that would be the Metropolitan Water Company of Nashville, Tennessee (but I’m not bitter at ALL) I found that I had paid thousands in sewer fees over the years for a service I never got.
They could tell me, within 30 seconds, the very day they had sent out the notice that the sewer was coming to the neighborhood and they would have hooked it up free. This happened in the mid 70s and I was talking to them in 1999!! In all that time, they couldn’t find a way to put a note on my bill to that effect.
They had sent the notice to the house, not to the owner of the house, and it was a rental property. The tenant tossed the notice and the owner likely never knew and no tenant was going to take the responsibility of hooking it up. I asked for a refund. The laughter that greeted that request was only slightly louder and longer than the one which greeted my request that they come out and put the house on the sewer and take my thousands as payment and call it even.
I ended up borrowing money to keep my word to the gal who bought the house. I found out that almost all major water companies follow this practice,
It reminds me of when the banks claim they can’t find old depositors and so they get to confiscate the $$ in orphaned accounts. From such hard to find people as famous actors and singers and such. At first they had to turn over the cash to the state after so many years. Then they wised up and charged a monthly account maintenance fee on orphaned accounts designed to consume the money in the accounts before they had to turn it over to the state. I found out about that the hard way about 30 years ago.
Global warming warning info? We MUST put that on labels. Highlight the tax portion of your bill in red? Way too much work …
I cannot repeat what I think of those people … Thieves is the politest I can go with …

Diclosure issue
Menlo (Diary) Thursday, May 21st at 2:53PM EST (link)What I want to know is, if this increased cost is in fact going to be a reality, why electric companies are not NOW printing messages on customers’ bills to this effect. Why are they not taking the initiative of telling customers to call Congress?
For that reason alone, I think they deserve as much blame as Congress for any increased cost resulting from such a policy. It makes them complicit, and I suspect their lack of action would make some question the credibility of those predicting such drastic rate hikes.
If it happens, we’re going to have problems when large numbers of people start dying from heat exhaustion and frigid cold. In the few isolated incidents we see every year, legislatures have before not thought twice about taking action on behalf of people who could not afford air conditioning. What will they do when it is no longer just a few isolated cases? What happens when people can no longer operate refrigerators and ovens and then die of either malnutrition or food poisoning? Even grocery stores and restaurants won’t be able to operate and keep their prices reasonable enough to stay in business.
If these cost projections are true, then I don’t think people will accept it. Once it happens, I don’t think they will be willing to wait on the legal or political procedural processes. Unfortunately, we are going to have to get to that point first given public awareness and likely skepticism.
