Getting Americans Back to Work

Is there any doubt that President Obama’s economic policies have failed to generate the jobs and healthier economy that they were sold on?  Ask the unemployed worker in Canton, Ohio, who is left wondering where their stimulus job is.  Ask the worker in Danville, Virginia, wondering if they may lose their job because of the Democrats’ cap-and-trade bill. Ask the mom in Fort Collins, Colorado, wondering if a government bureaucrat will one day stand in her way to getting the timely treatment that her ill child desperately needs.  Every job lost is an economic free fall for a family.  They weren’t promised a job in two or three years, they were promised immediate results when the Administration asked to borrow your money to pay for its stimulus.

Republicans have put forth thoughtful, serious, and substantive plans of action that put jobs first.   Yet, Speaker Pelosi, Senator Reid, Democrats in Congress, and President Obama have repeatedly taken a go it alone approach.  It started with the so-called ‘stimulus.’  As if that wasn’t bad enough, Washington’s mortgage handouts punished those who played by the rules and rewarded the reckless – and sometimes illegal – actions of others.  The Administration and the unchecked Democrat majorities followed with the most bloated budget in American history, amassing more debt than the previous 43 Presidents combined.  Then Washington decided to get into the auto business.

And now we hear from the Administration that Washington needs to spend even more.  At what point does it end?  We must create an environment that empowers small businesses and American workers to thrive.   History proves that our nation’s small businesses and innovators in private industry are uniquely capable of reigniting our economy.

Our country, our families, our workers, and our children simply cannot afford to pay for their spending spree.

And people across this country are starting to realize it.  As each day passes, more and more Americans are questioning the President’s policies – understandably so.  Washington, especially now, must be reminded of that.  Leadership requires making choices – often difficult ones.  Our economy is facing tough challenges, and the Democrat monopoly in Washington offers few choices except for borrow, spend, and regulate.  I’m here today to let you know there are alternatives—common-sense tax relief; smart and necessary reductions in spending, and intelligent policies that do not bankrupt our nation.  That is why we continue our fight, and I hope everyone with growing concerns about the direction Washington is moving does as well.

Yea but...

pcnnc (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 8:32AM EST (link)

Mr. Cantor, this is all well and good but with an electorate that is mind numbed by media that is either blind, complaisant, or worse, being driven by a group of hidden elites we have little hope of stopping anything Mr.O’ and his merry band of socialists cook up. All we can do is look towards the future (2010 & 2012) by building awareness of what the Liberal socialists are doing to our children and grandchildren with all the debt they are accumulating.

I am amazed by the number of people I talk to daily that think it is only themselves that are going to be taxed to oblivion and the country will be okay for their children. They have concept about what debt means to their progeny and the terrible burden they will be under. Once I’ve shown them the most likely scenario, a tax burden of around %45 and that their children will basically be working for the State, people’s reactions change.

Any bickering and complaining about what is happening now is understood by the average person as “politics as usual”. Let’s face it, that is all that has occurred in Congress for nearly 40 years. The Republicans (I no longer consider myself a Republican, but a conservative) should be drawing the attention of young voters and middle-aged voters to just exactly what national debt means to them and their children, not engaging in pointless battles they cannot win. Liberals hate truth in the now, they are terrified of truth in the future, e.g. Palin. Stop fighting (especially with eac other) and start educating the electorate.

For we are created to do good works…(Eph2:10)

…common-sense tax relief; smart and necessary reductions in spending, and intelligent policies that do not bankrupt our nation.

We all like mom, apple pie and a good flag video with the Marine Corps Band. Would you please pick just one item that fits into the the above list and tell us what – specifically – Republicans would like to do. And then tell us what needs to be done in both the short term (this Congress) and the longer term (after ’10) to accomplish that single objective.

If you’d like a hint or two for long term goals in the area of “smart … reductions in spending”, it would be nice to see a plan to eliminate the Department of Education and get the fed out of education funding altogether. Or how about elimination of the farm programs and the US Department of Agriculture.

I will echo this. You need to pick programs to demonize and try to kill them.

It would also help if the Republican leadership would purge the liberals and install honest conservatives. The Country polls that it is conservative not republican. Catch a clue.

Rep. Cantor:

You said, “there are alternatives—common-sense tax relief; smart and necessary reductions in spending, and intelligent policies that do not bankrupt our nation. That is why we continue our fight, and I hope everyone with growing concerns about the direction Washington is moving does as well.”

What? When? Where? How? You give no specifics.

Where is your strategy? Where are the words that will inspire Americans to get involved in the political process? Where are the instructions to the American voters as to HOW BEST to influence their elected public servants in the Congress and Senate.

Back on March 3, 2009, Redstate.com contributor NeoKong posted something here that I thought summed up my thoughts, too. So I faxed it to you and RNC Chairman Michael Steele. It’s worth pondering again. The question remains: when will you public servants who are supposed to be FIGHTING TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL GROW SPINES AND ACTUALLY FIGHT FOR US?

>>>

An Open Letter To Michael Steele, Chairman of the Republican National Committee (phone (202) 863-8500; fax (202) 863-8820) and Rep. Eric Cantor (phone (202) 225-2815; (202) 225-0011), posted by NeoKong at www.redstate.com, and with wholeheartedly agree:
First things first.
GROW A DAMN SPINE WILL YOU PLEASE!!!!!
I am not trying to be disrespectful to either of you two gentlemen and we appreciate your hard work of course but may I offer some of what I feel to be some helpful criticism and some good advice as a humble private citizen.
For the love of God will you please stand up for the party and stop running from your own base.
I am speaking specifically of the way that both of you have seemed to run away from what Rush Limbaugh said about wanting Barack Obama’s socialist policies to fail.
I watched your recent responses on T.V. regarding his statement and it seemed that you two could not get away from the man fast enough.
The next time some stupid reporter asks you what you think of what Rush Limbaugh said about Barack Obama you look that guy in straight in the eye and say this:
“Rush Limbaugh is an American citizen and he is entitled to say whatever he wants about Barack Obama.”
Then ask the reporter if they have a problem with free speech.
Next, when they ask you if you agree with what he said you tell that reporter this:
“I promise to support Barack Obama just as much if not more than the way that Barack Obama,Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and for that matter the entire Democratic party has supported George Bush over the last few years.”
Then you ask that reporter if he has a problem with that.
Since most reporters seem to love to put their own opinion into every story the report they should jump at the chance.
Try it just once.Turn the tables on them and ask them a question.
Ask them who they voted for.
Ask them what party they belong to.
Ask them if they earn more than $250,000 a year.
Ask them what they think of George Bush or if they voted for Bill Clinton.
Ask them what they think about abortion.
Any one of those questions will have them reeling back and stuttering instantly and I doubt they will answer it.
Ah…but their reaction will answer your question and all who are watching will see it laid bare.
Get in their face.Push back. You are not being interrogated for Pete’s sake.
Don’t worry about being to polite with them.
Secretly they hate your guts and you need to realize that.
You will never get a fair shake from them so don’t worry about ruffling their feathers a little.
Put them in their place. They are nothing more than candy ass T.V. models working for the DNC.
Make them look like a fool once in a while.
How could it hurt?
I also have noticed that when they ask you and other Republicans certain questions that you do not have a good answer ready and start backtracking away form core principles of the party.
For example :”Tax cuts for the rich”
Let’s face it.Pundits know that they can tag you with that question at any time and you have no response and they make you look silly.
Try saying this.
“Of course I support tax cuts for the rich you jackass.Who do you think puts people to work in this country….?The poor?“
Then ask them if someone wants a good job should they turn to a wealthy man or go to a public housing project and which may be more fruitful.
Wealthy people put this country to work.Poor people do not.
Why are you ashamed to admit that?
Whenever you tax the rich even higher you are killing a job somewhere.
Now you simply turn back to the pundit or reporter and ask them if they support putting somebody out of work.
Ask them who will spend that money better and put it into the private sector faster and more efficiently.
The federal govt. or a private businessman?
You guys need to realize that small business owners work very hard for their money and you need to protect them from the govt.
Will you please stick up for them with a little vigor?
One small businessman can put 30 people to work with good jobs but if those “wealthy” or “rich” people get over taxed by the govt. someone is going to be unemployed.
Remember this.
EVERYBODY wants to be rich.
We all do.What’s so bad about that? This is America. It’s the land of opportunity and the land of the free. It’s not the land of the free lunch.
Why are you so ashamed to stick up for rich people?
What is so great about being poor?
Being poor sucks.
Keep in mind that the person asking you about “tax cuts for the rich” is no doubt a millionaire themself or will soon be.
T.V. people make big bucks and it is the height of hypocrisy for them to be criticizing the rich as if they aren’t themselves or rub elbows with them all day long.
You want to keep in mind that the senior leadership of the DNC are ALL MILLIONAIRES!!!!
Some many times over.
Here is another little tidbit I think may be helpful.
Stop worrying about every little thing that might offend somebody.
It’s a false premise. Those people aren’t really offended but merely pretend to be to push you into a corner.
Nobody offends more people than a liberal. If you’re a Christian or pro-life,in the military or a Republican,if you like Christmas or traditional American customs and cultures or supported George Bush it will be a liberal that will attack you without shame.
When has it ever cost them?
Barack Obama spent twenty years in a church that makes a KKK rally look like a Scout jamboree.Harry Reid said the war in Iraq was lost.John Kerry called the troops stupid.John Mutha called his own constituents rednecks.Their whole damn party tried to tank the war in Iraq just for political gain. They disgust me.
Don’t worry about it.
Liberal offense is just a tactic that they use to corner you and make you backtrack.
Be ready for it and stop apologizing .
It’s embarrassing when I have to watch you guys always apologizing.Tell someone to shut up once in a while.
Stand up be proud of who you are and your party and do not let some stupid reporter get the best of you on camera.
Let me tell you a little about myself.
I work very hard and own my own home.I want to keep every penny I can and I don’t like to give it to the govt. so they can just give it away like I am an open ATM machine.
In 2000 and 2004 I gave George Bush and the GOP hundreds and hundreds of dollars.
In 2006 after watching John McCain and Lindsey Graham basically call me a bigot because I didn’t want to open the border to Mexico and make millions of illegals instant citizens my generosity came to an end.
I don’t think I was the only one.
The GOP has betrayed it’s core.
It’s true.
You guys need to get with the program and stop picking my pocket.
My point is that the GOP shouldn’t just assume that they have my support,my money or my vote all locked up.
You don’t.
The next time I gave money was when John McCain nominated Sarah Palin for V.P.
I sent $100 that very night.I voted for McCain but I was holding my nose when I did.
The guy wasn’t floating my boat if you get my drift.
Definitely not my first choice.
Just recently I received a fundraising letter from Sen. Jim DeMint.
I sent it back empty except for a note that I enclosed that basically said “When you show me something worth paying for I will send some some money but If you wish to be a RINO then I can have a Democrat for free.”
I did.
I’m not joking.
This is my point.
I am a Republican of the Ronald Reagan party.I loved the Gingrich revolution and the Contact with America.I am proud of my country and support our troops and their mission.I want our borders secure and my taxes low.
I am not embarrassed by Sarah Palin.I adore the woman and was very disappointed in the way she was left hanging by her own party.
Whatever happened to guts and chivalry…?
You guys dropped the ball.
The GOP owes her a huge apology.
Remember this.
Anytime that the GOP moves closer the the DNC my wallet closes just a little bit tighter.
I do not want bi-partisanship if it means surrender to the likes of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and the rest of that band of thieves.
I will not support anyone who wishes to support them either.
You need to decide which party you work for if you want my vote or my money.
RINO’s get ZERO!!!!
Thank you and have a good day.

southernilpat Tuesday, July 14th at 10:10AM EST (link)

But you’re preaching to the choir here. If the Republican party wants to survive in any sort of meaningful position for the next generation, they need to stop cooperating with the socialists who have taken over the Democrat party (even though they aren’t really a majority in rank and file Democrats) and give conservatives a REAL choice. I know too many people who have simply withdrawn from the political process because they see no difference between the two major parties. And for the most part, they are right.

phxg (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 10:32AM EST (link)

It is going to take more than empty platitudes and feel good rhetoric from the GOP to alter this course. I am personally watching my business fail because of one simple fact, people (those who actually start small businesses) are scared to death of what is going to be implemented by Obama & Co. The costs and requirements are so vague, the costs so obscure that everyone I know is holding back ANY investment in growth till they know what it’s going to cost them.

So I know you are but one official but it is high time that you and your co-workers become more vocal. Produce reams of press releases and get in front of any and every camera to decry the fact that the mess we are in is a direct result of the fear being delivered by the White House. Sure, it’s going to take a lot to get past the media Pro-Obama filtering, but now is the time.

Nearly everyone I know who are conservatives are coming to the conclusion that the GOP and you currently elected Republicans are unable to do anything. And you know what, I am right there in that sentiment.

The freeholder and entrepreneur are the great enemy of the Revolution and only they have the means and will to oppose it. What I don’t understand is why this isn’t being said out loud in the Country.

I (we) appreciate your nice sentiments, but now the question is – So What?

Anyone who has paid even the slightest bit of attention understands that Obama and the democrats have become socialists (at best). Thier ‘change’ represents the obliteration of the basic founding principles of what used to be America

If you don’t begin to fight them on thier level you will lose. If you don’t believe in your positions at least as much as they believe in thiers and aren’t willing to go to the same extents they are, well, you will lose.

If republicans don’t stop pandering to the disinterested, uninformed citizenry (i.e. moderates) and actually begin to LEAD them, you may as well bring back Bob Michael. No one wins a battle by being ‘nice’.

These political words are not going to bring people to you. 2010 will be a BLOWOUT if you and your peer’s decide that SMALL GOVERNMENT is the mantra….please start with ENDING The 787 billion dollar “stimulus”. If you all walk your talk and recently 8 of your members dove off the deep-end which unfortunately gives cover to the Democrats you can win but American’s are not just going to fall in your lap.

I could go on and on but when you all get the majority WE expect hearings on the IG’s and ACORN and with ACORN we expect them to be indicted, these are things that you can include in your platform. American’s are well aware of these illegal things going on and the protection racket that the oldstream media is involved in with these issues. This 2010 election should be a cakewalk but I suspect your liberal members will still try to destroy any chance you have of taking the House back. WE cannot continue to DRAG you all across the finish line you have to offer something concrete not just platitudes.

ColdWarrior (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 12:23PM EST (link)

We can make them fear losing their posts if we, conservatives, take back the Republican Party by sheer numbers.

Want to put fear in the congresscritters? Join the Party as a precinct committeeman so you can most effectively impact the outcome of the Republican primary. Registered Republicans don’t get to vote for the Party leadership, only those who are also precinct committeeman do. If you were a precinct committeeman in 2008, you got to vote for, perhaps, a precinct captain. Your legislative district chairman. The county chairman. And you got to elect the electors who voted for your state chairman. And the electors who voted in Michael Steele. Half the precinct committeeman slots nationwide are unfilled. Conservatives need to fill them. Now.

Of course, we need to do all sorts of otherr stuff. Money helps. If I had a spare million dollars, I’d use it to help a real conservative Republican beat an incumbent moderate, fake conservative in a primary. But even if I had that million dollars, my FIRST priority would be to remain a precinct committeeman. Because as long as we have secret ballots, money, theoretically, cannot buy election outcomes. But I at least know that as an elected precinct committeeman I’ll get to vote in the Party leadership elections and affect the outcome of the primary contests in which the voters of my precinct have a say.

Use the search function of Redstate.com. Type in the words precinct committeeman. You’ll find what you need to know.

The horses have been lead to the water. Will they drink?

Thank you.

P.S. Anyone here know whether Rep. Cantor might be facing a primary challenge by a real conservative? Maybe I need to get going on earning that extra million dollars. (I wish!)

Nobody who goes to the "RACIST!" meme is going to vote

Achance (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 11:26AM EST (link)

for any Republican anytime any way. So why does it so worry Republicans to be called racists? Running Comrade Obama was the perfect ploy. He has paralyzed the Republican/conservative side of the res publica. Nobody dares say a discouraging word about Comrade Obama for fear of having to answer charges of racism. We need to get over it. The people who buy that stuff are never going to support us anyway, so why should we care? If we’re going to be criticized anyway, called a racist anyway, why shouldn’t we get our money’s worth?

In Vino Veritas

The politics or personal destruction, I think.

Steph C (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 11:50AM EST (link)

It’s not so much the “RACIST!” meme as it is that policy which hangs over their heads. Look at Ensign, for example. Yes, I know it was reprehensible behavior however you look at it but where is it criminal, as in violating campaign finance laws, for his family to have paid off his mistress with $96k?

Racist is yet another distraction in an ocean of them put forth by this Congress and Administration. “RACIST!” has become a code word for: “look out you’re next on the hit list.” It never stops with that word alone and providing facts to back up the claim but inevitably leads to every snippet of dirty laundry they can find, or make up, to fit their story.

How long has it been and they’re still dredging up Rush’s addiction to prescription drugs?

You just make sure you’re being called names by the right people and you can’t put yourself up as some paragon of virtue if you’re not, maybe not even if you are because these days nobody will believe you.

These days, if you’re an elected or appointed official, the common belief is that you steal, lie, and cheat on your spouse. It doesn’t hurt the Democrats because for most of them, if they’re accused of that stuff, they’re just living down to their reputation or to expectation. It hurts Republicans generally and it specifically hurts SoCons who do pose themselves as virtuous and turn out to have “flaws.”

This is war. Political war. War for the future of America. America really does hang in the balance. This isn’t patty cake partisanship anymore.

Why aren’t the Republicans acting like it?

Someone here has a signature quote something like, “You might not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.”

Dear Randy,

Thank you for contacting me about the American Clean Energy and Security (ACES) Act of 2009. I understand your concerns with this piece of legislation and would like to explain why I ultimately decided to support this bill when it came before the House on June 26, 2009.

As with any critical piece of legislation, I took my time to hear from constituents from across the District, study the bill, and work with my colleagues to make key changes. Draft legislation on this issue has been in the works for months and I, along with my staff, have been continually monitoring the changes since taking office in January. Several critical adjustments were made to protect the agriculture industry and I offered an amendment to help connect Colorado wind farms to America’s wider energy markets. After these changes were accepted, I made the decision to support the bill.

We cannot afford to continue sending billions of dollars overseas while neglecting the vast energy resources right here in America. It is critical to our long-term economic prosperity that we invest in our own domestic sources of energy. I have always supported–and continue to support–pursuing all our energy options, including exploring our domestic oil and natural gas resources. We must decrease our dependence on foreign oil by growing our renewable energy industry. Achieving energy independence is an issue of national security, and this bill is an important step in that direction.

This legislation will bring unique benefits to Northern and Eastern Colorado. The renewable energy industry is a reality in the 4th District and this bill brings jobs directly to our community. ACES is estimated to create 28,000 jobs in the state, many of those in the 4th District. Quite frankly, we stand to see greater benefits from this bill than many other areas of the country. Latest estimates project that 41,000 households in the District will see a decrease in their net annual costs from this bill. This was a reality I could not ignore.

I was excited to be part of introducing an amendment that will ensure regional coordination of electricity transmission, allowing Colorado’s alternative energy industries to flourish by exporting energy around the West. The renewable electricity potential in Colorado leaves the state more than able to generate excess renewable electricity for export to other states, but our outdated transmission infrastructure is inadequate to bring these electrical resources to high demand areas. My amendment to ACES will ensure regional planning and siting of interstate transmission lines will be completed in a timely manner and will create jobs in Colorado.

I worked hard with my colleagues in the House Agriculture Committee to ensure that Colorado’s farmers and ranchers reaped the benefits of this bill. I felt that the cost of regulating emissions from farms across Colorado would be far too expensive for agriculture and result in relatively limited reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. I was pleased the agriculture industry was exempted from the emissions cap–without this critical provision I would not have supported this legislation.

The ACES legislation also contains provisions to protect consumers from energy price increases. Some of the consumer protections are established by giving free carbon credits to utilities in order to keep costs low, while still complying with the standards set by ACES. In fact, 55% of the carbon credit allowances through 2025 will be used for consumer protections. After 2025, that number will go up to 58%. For example, electric and natural gas utilities that distribute to consumers will receive allowances of credits to be used exclusively to keep rates low. States will also receive allowances to provide rebates to consumers who use home heating oil.

I fought hard for a provision that would give rural electric cooperatives additional carbon credits to allow them to more easily comply with the emissions standards set by ACES. My staff and I spoke with local rural electric coops, the Energy and Commerce Committee, the Colorado Rural Electric Association, and the National Rural Electric Coop Association. I, along with six other members, sent a letter to Congressional leadership expressing our concern about the potential impact of this legislation on small and rural electric companies. In the final version of the bill, small utilities like rural electric coops were given additional carbon credits for consumer protections. This means that rural electric companies will receive a fair deal in distribution of carbon credits.

This legislation pays for itself by generating revenue from the sale of carbon credits. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the American Clean Energy and Security Act will result in a net reduction in the federal budget deficit. This was also an important consideration when it came to my support of the bill. We cannot continue to spend our way into debt, saddling our children with unbearable burdens.

ACES updates efficiency standards for new buildings, factories, and appliances while also helping states establish programs for implementing water efficiency programs, building retrofits, and smart grid implementation. With energy efficiency measures taken into account, consumers may actually see a decrease in their energy bill while ensuring we, as a nation, are smarter about the way we use energy. It is always cheaper to save energy than to make it.

I understand that we may continue to disagree on this issue. I hope this letter clarifies the reasoning behind my support for the American Clean Energy and Security Act. I know that you are sincere and are of deep conviction on this issue. I understand and respect your views, as I hope you do mine. Please do not hesitate to be in touch about this or any other issues that are important to you.

Sincerely,

Betsy Markey
Member of Congress

==========================

I could write a novel on how wrong she is in her response, but the short version is this:

1. 95% of the energy generated in Colorado is from coal. There is simply no way that green technologies can replace this even in the next couple of decades. The cost of energy for Coloradans will increase to ridiculous amounts. Fortunately the last couple of summers have been cooler, so energy needs will be reduced during that season, but colder winters are also upon us, the other eight months of the year. The increased cost of heating our homes will have a significant impact on our ability to make ends meet. There’s simply no way that Colorado will be able to generate enough green energy to offset the carbon tax costs to the coal industry, which will likely still be more efficient to generate even after the tax is imposed.

2. The democrat-led legislature passed and Gov. Ritter signed a bill that significantly increases regulations on natural gas and oil production, as well as proposed pipeline projects that will now likely be stalled indefinitely. This will take away even more jobs and increase our dependence on foreign oil.

Rep. Markey, as well as all the other Representatives who voted for this bill has it completely backwards. This law will reduce the number of jobs in Colorado, not increase them. This law will increase the costs of energy and other goods and services for every citizen of the State.

This bill will lower the standard of living for every Coloradan, affecting the poor and elderly the most.

As are all of the socialists pushing this crap.

But most of these are diversions to waste your time and focus as they go for the real prize, national health care…..

Now is the time to start brushing up on your first aid skills and learn as much as you can about home health care.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

My CongressCritter, Tim Walz – (S) MN-01, hasn’t even bothered to respond to my email or phone call.

But, considering that the 20-something staffer who argued with me for 20 minutes admitted at the end of the call that the profit motive when it comes to health care and energy is “immoral”, and thus it is imperative that the government run these areas, I’m not really surprised.

More Specifics....

Amy J. Tuesday, July 14th at 11:14AM EST (link)

Rep. Cantor, while I appreciate you taking the time to write this, and I understand your sentiments, your post is lacking the specifics necessary for the American Public to take you seriously. After the quite unspecific stimulus plan, the unspecific omnibus spending bill, the unspecific cap-and-trade bill, and the still unspecific health care plan, Americans need less vagueness and more concrete information about exactly what taxes you would cut, and also what spending you will reduce. It is entirely the fault of the Republican Party that they are no longer in power in Washington. While taxes were cut, spending increased. It seemed Republicans were following a version of “Democrat-light” for the past 8 years. I agree whole heartedly that we need to reduce spending, and at the least keep the Bush tax cuts from expiring, (which in some cases it is already too late to do), but what spending is going to be reduced?

I will gladly support Republicans if they can come up with an understandable and clear plan for what they will do differently. But until then,I’ll just keep attending tea parties and hoping we can put responsible people in the government in another year and a half.

Republican Alternatives

Rep. Eric Cantor (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 6:27PM EST (link)

House Republicans are developing and have offered alternatives from the first day of the Obama Administration. In fact, at our first meeting, we presented the President with a document outlining our alternative plan to create jobs. Unfortunately, the President and House Democrats went with the go-it-alone approach. They promised you that unemployment would not reach higher than 8%, now it is closing in on 10% and climbing.

You can see some of our economic alternatives on our website: http://republicanwhip.house.gov/Solutions

What has the GOP done in response….?

” Unfortunately, the President and House Democrats went with the go-it-alone approach. They promised you that unemployment would not reach higher than 8%, now it is closing in on 10% and climbing.”

Some polite disagreement about the effects of the stimulus maybe?

I know that it’s easy for people like me here in the peanut gallery to backseat drive but in my opinion you guys need to put this around Pres. Obama’s neck like a burning tire. (Rhetorically of course).
It’s time for some scorched earth policy my friend.
All that reaching across the aisle for the last few years has been a disaster.
It’s a loser.
How could things be worse politically?

You need to start targeting Nancy Pelosi ,John Murtha,Barney Frank,Charlie Rangel,John Conyers and many other Dem reps and open investigations into their corruption. Put them on the defensive hard and let the chips fall where they may.
You need to cripple them politically.
Slash and burn.
If this isn’t the time to make the last stand then I don’t know when it ever could be.
If all that cap/n/trade and Obamacare gets passed then we will be stuck with it forever and the voters will remember who did ( and didn’t) stick up for them.

That's a great start, Congressman. But here's where the GOP

eburke (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 7:34PM EST (link)

so often breaks down. They go in one of two directions.

1) They get all wonkish and philisophical about issues which makes the average person’s eyes roll back into their heads; or,

2) Much more often they do as I describe elsewhere – they play ominous music and tell people how awful the Pelosi/Reid Democrats are. Unfortunately, the average, uninformed voter who we need in order to win elections don’t have the foggiest, freaking clue who SanFranNan or “We’ve lost the war” Reid is, nor do they care. It just sounds like ‘politics as usual’ and it turns them off.

We/you need to start framing our message in simple truths that the average, Joe Lunchbucket understands. *They* want to control your lives; *We* want you to have freedom. *They* want to tell you what kind of light bulbs to buy (which btw contain mercury and are made in China); *We* want you to have the freedom to buy what you want instead of shipping even more jobs overseas. *They* want to add thousands of dollars in taxes on all America in pursuit of a policy that will increase *your* utility bill by $1,000+/year; *We* will look at all areas of energy production. *They* will ensure that even more jobs are shipped overseas when we subject ourselves to rules that China doesn’t have to play by. *We* think that there needs to be a level playing field so that even more of our jobs don’t end up overseas. (we don’t even need to get into what a crock AGW is even though a plurality of Americans believe it’s a crock)

And that, Congressman, is *just* on the issue of Tax & Trade. Simple, effective advertisements showing the impact of Dem policies on the average American.

*That’s* what we need to be doing 24/7/365, all day, every day. KISS it *every* day – They’re the party of nanny-state control; we are the party of freedom and liberty.

Preach it! Believe it!

Rep. Cantor- Why did you add "earmarks" to the stimulus you are sounding off against

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 12:16PM EST (link)

I live in your district, and have some questions. Back in June 2008, there was an article in a local paper entitled “Cantor swears off earmarks.”
http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2008/06/08/3486738.htm
In that article you are quoted as saying the following-
“We need to come up with some type of best practices so the public can restore its confidence in the way the federal government is spending taxpayer dollars. ” You said “Not all earmarks are bad, and indeed some are worthy of attention.” The interviewer asked “Considering that most congressional districts across the country receive some level of earmarks through their respective legislators, does the seventh district lose because you aren’t on board with it”? Your reply-”Not necessarily, because other ways exist for localities to pull down federal funds. There are formulas in place for transportation, health care, and other projects. The monies can also come down through the federal bureaucracy through the state by the Governor.” Later in the article you said “Money gets to the local level, but this overwhelming flurry of pork barrell spending needs to stop.”

My first question is-Being a 6 term Rep., were you a part of the Republican spending spree when the Republicans had the majority prior to 2006, but, now think it terrible because the Democrats are doing it with gusto?

More importantly, you are now speaking out loudly against the stimulus, and saying it is a failure because it hasn’t created the jobs it was supposed to do. Why then did you add “earmarks” to the stimulus you are so against? I don’t have the exact dollar amount you were awarded, but, your earmarks were for a railway system connecting Richmond to Washington. You have been asked about those earmarks lately, most recently by a host on Foxnews, and you have not been able to defend your earmarks to anyone’s satisfaction. I am confused as to what jobs that would have created, and how it would have helped small businesses. In June of this year there was an article announcing Gov. Kaine’s (D) new amtrack service between Richmond and Washington.
http://www.allamericanpatriots.com/48753102-virginia-governor-kaine-announces-new-amtrack-service-between-richmond-and-washington
In the article it announces that the service will begin this fall.

Why would you earmark dollars for something that has already been accomplished by Virginia’s Democrat Governor? If I am mistaken about your earmark, and you had another railway project in mind, why would you support stimulus money for jobs that will end as soon as the stimulus dollars run out. That isn’t long term thinking, or job creation. It really isn’t any better thinking
than your vote in support of TARP.

BTW- How’s your listening tour going?

Amen Scope

mmmc (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 1:28PM EST (link)

I also live in Cantor’s district. I heard about that earmark just after the stimulus passed. Why do we need “high speed” rail, Mr. Cantor? Will you be the only one utilizing it? It takes 2 hours to drive to DC proper, 90 minutes by this high speed rail. He also voted to retroactively punish the AIG executives, because they preformed as they should have under a legal contract.

We get the same type of “non-offensive political speak” when he is interviewed on WRVA (local talk radio station) or local news. He is wary of speaking his mind. Callers to the radio station often express frustration with his political speak. He did get a Dem challenger last election, but she would have been Obama’s best buddy in Congress. He does not, as of yet, have a primary challenger. He usually runs unopposed.

I get the very few e-mails that get sent out for his local “meetings” or whatever. The last one was on April 15th, in Richmond. What a great plan, because most of his constituents who would have been interested were at the local tea party (where he should have been to get set straight). 5000 showed up there, I heard about 10 showed up to his meeting.

Rep Cantor started out doing a good job, but apparently party leadership comes at a very high price . . . principles.

mmmc- The Dem running against him was a virtual unknown

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 1:55PM EST (link)

and no one will even try to primary him. I’m sure it is because of his name recognition, and his position as whip. I pray for someone to come forward to primary him in 2010. Yes, he did start out on the correct path, but, as I said above he is now a 6th term Rep. He drank the Washington Cocktails, and has now decided it is better to go along just to get along, or his Cocktail circuit will dry up. He claims to be a “conservative”, and others have labeled him a “conservative, however, his type of conservatism is what has gotten the Republican party in the mess it is currently in. I listen to him on local radio also, with Joe Thomas. He speaks, and you hear words coming out of his mouth, yet he says absolutely nothing.

I don’t get any emails from him or his office. I posted a comment on his website, shortly after he voted for TARP, saying how very dissapointed I was in his vote. My comment was removed from the page. Even though he has spoken at James Madison’s Montpelier, which is just a few miles from my home, I didn’t bother going. I personally think he is a terrible speaker, even if what he is saying is great, which is rare if at all. I’m hearing that there is an effort to find a primary challenger, but, no one has come forward yet. If he keeps saying/doing what he has, I suspect more will be willing to come forward.

You’re post shows me that you still don’t really get it. You’re ‘piece’ is not only as fluffy as a freshly baked croissant, it contains the same message that you guys have been trying to run on for the last 8 years which is basically – Please vote to put us in power because we’re not as bad as the mean, old other guys.

I respectfully ask, nee I *beg* you, to stop this approach to trying to win elections. It hasn’t worked…it’s not *gonna* work because the average, uninformed voter sees it for what it is – gloom & doom about ‘the other guy’ w/out any reason to vote for you.The Dems can get by with that because they play Santa Claus better and because they have a compliant media to help them along.

When my wife, who is as conservative as I am but much less ‘involved’, starts ripping on RNC/NRCC/NSRC commercials for their ‘dire’ music, ‘Pelosi/Reid/Obama schtick, and their ‘the world’s going to come to an end’ memes, you’ve got a major problem.

Suggestion – try being bold…quit cowering behind banal platitudes and repeat over and over again – we are the Party of small government and freedom. You can either direct your life or let the government direct it for you. Say it, and repeat it, and repeat it, and repeat it. And then – tie some specific examples to it. It’s not like you should have a hard time finding any.

However, if you and your compatriots in leadership continue to pant the mindless platitudes and fluffy sound bites that you penned here – hunker down, buy some popcorn, and enjoy your lengthy stay in the minority as the country continues to slide downhill into socialism/fascism/corporatism, and you continue to wonder why those who should be supporting you the most passionately have wearied of going to war with you.

djemi (Diary) Tuesday, July 14th at 4:41PM EST (link)

This is prompted by Rep. Cantor’s Front Page Diary today.

It seems as though you folks in the Leadership like to drop by once in a while and drop off a diary to enlighten the troops. Those diaries typically attract a fairly significant number of comments. As one would expect, some are just red meat but many are well thought out questions.

I have no problem with you ignoring the red meat (even when it’s mine), but it’s beyond irritating that you can’t seem to respond to the commentary that is well thought out. I would encourage you to rethink your strategy regarding posting at Redstate. We are not an outlet for your press releases, we are a conservative/Republican blog dedicated to commentary on the issues. If you don’t want to – or can’t be bothered to – engage the community in commentary, don’t drop off any more little gifts on the porch. Don’t wander through our house and patronize us and expect us to appreciate it.

Keep this up – Rep. Cantor – and you may find you get treated like the trolls you are. Don’t be surprised when you get “Hinz Rule” attached to your next post.

mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, July 15th at 10:41PM EST (link)

Let me note a couple of things.

1. In the world of people who have no qualms about being nasty over an issue, I may not be the king, but I’m certainly a Prince.
2. When members of the leadership post here they frequently attract more than their share of nasty, non-issue related comments. Once in a while by me.
3. Said comments (#2) are unfair. Even mine. Life is also unfair.
4. Members of the leadership who post here almost never come back and address even the intelligent, issue related comments (like mine usually are ;-) ).
5. While I don’t speak for Redstate, I will note I’ve gotten some significant feedback to the effect that many in the RS family feel we are being patronized by the leadership and simply used as an outlet for press releases.

I would propose a possible solution to both the Leadership and RS Management, and note that I have no idea if this is even technologically doable, so take it for what it’s worth.

Perhaps a “deal” could be struck with the parties to the effect that when a member of the leadership – or any Rep or Senator for that matter – posts something at RS, the Directors will assign a “moderator” with the ability to review all comments and simply remove the ones that are offensive or off-topic. Ideally, all comments to one of those posts would be “held” until reviewed by the moderator and then posted by the mod. If that’s not feasible then just delete the offending post. In return, the poster, or their designee (staff member, etc), would agree to visit the post and respond to some – certainly not all – of the comments.

I think this could be a win-win. The leadership gets thoughtful input – and knowing that comments are going to be reviewed and might be responded to – will improve the quality of the comments. On “our” side, the assumption that the site is being patronized will quickly go away.

Aw come on Moe... I was certain that having

mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, July 15th at 11:35PM EST (link)

members of the Redstate family either grovel or quake in the presence of Your Holiness (Your Redness?) would count as “pay”. Heck, I know of people who would pay to wield TheBlamstick™ for a day.

If it’s really a good idea, maybe somebody could suggest that the leadership direct an earmark our way to cover the moderation cost. After all, I would think that the concept of “all things in moderation” would go over really well in some circles in Washington…

They don't take groveling/quaking at AirTran, alas. :)

"Bankruptcy"

Britcom (Diary) Thursday, July 16th at 12:28AM EST (link)

Mr. Cantor,

Today people have information overload. With all their problems, they can’t concentrate long enough to read an entire proposal.

They want things presented to them in a nutshell. I think it important these days to have your message boiled down to one operative word that fits in that nutshell, in your above diary I see that word as “bankruptcy”.

It’s a word, unfortunately, that people understand today and are familiar with. It’s a word that has meaning and power in the mind of the populace. It’s a word that brings to mind all of the horrors of what is happening today. It’s a word that when spoken, says that Republicans know what’s going on and what to do about the problem and that the Democrats (who won’t use that word) haven’t a clue and are in denial and making everything worse by digging deeper.

This word “bankruptcy” (in the sense that we want to avoid a national bankruptcy) is the word that we all need to get together on and hammer the Democrats with, in the House and Senate and the White House.

If we use this word over and over and over again, people out there will get the point that the Dems are driving us over the edge of a cliff, and the GOP will get the support that we need to rally and ride into Congress in 2010 with a house majority and a mission to save the US from the Dems reckless trillion dollar spending spree and an embarrassing national bankruptcy.

This is my assessment on the nation’s current political landscape.
