Hoffman Surges in New R2K Poll, Neck and Neck with Owens

Research 2000 newest poll numbers-

Owens is down 1%
Hoffman is up 9%
Scozzafava is down 9%

She needs to withdraw and throw her support to Hoffman

I mean, like a good Republican who only has the best interests of the country in mind.

An additional benefit would be that I would quit calling her “Scozzafavabeanswithanicebottleofchianti.”

Yeah...well...now we have the Republican party ignoring Owens and openly attacking Hoffman

AceInTX (Diary) Thursday, October 29th at 2:01PM EST (link)

what kind of sense does that make…and what will that do to his momentum…as I see it…the NRCC and RNC attack ads can only hurt Hoffman and help Owens…Dede is done

but of course, when all is said and done…the old guard will be blaming the Consdervatives for turning the seat blue when they were the ones attacking the only viable and reliable conservative/Republican caucus vote!

This is maddening!

They have lost their sights. They are targeting a fellow Republican, who will vote with them more, and have a better shot at re-election, and a better shot at being elected at all. Screw em. Maybe if Doug wins, it will cause revolts in party leadership. Palin will take over the RNC (maybe not the best outcome…), Bachman will take over the NRCC, and DeMint the NRSC.

Hoffman says he'll be running in 10 as a Republican whether he wins now or not

so essentially we have the Republican party attacking the most viable Republican in the race even though he is necessarily running as a third party candidate now because the Old Guard forced him to

IN other words…they’d rather have this seat turn blue than support a conservative who has said he’d caucus with the Republicans and win or lose…would be running as a Republican in 2010.

This is when you can take all the crap they’ve accused us of…and turn it on it’s head….now THEY “want to elect Democrats”. Now it’s THEM who want to tear a candidate down because they aren’t with the Republican Party 100%, never mind the only thing he’s not with the party on is the R beside his name…oh wait…Hoffman is a registered Republican isn’t he? doesn’t he by definition have an R by his name?

I posted the contact numbers for the NRCC below…call them all…and email them!!!

Nobody in the BOS – DCA axis is ever going to vote for a Republican. Is a cocktail party invitation so dear, or a piece of a lady lobbyist so sweet as to be purchased at the price of being chained to the MSM.

If a Republican wants to have a presser, he should have it where the people who vote for him live and where the media will at least give him more attention. Even though the lefties have made substantial inroads even in Flyover Country media, at least there, they have to give some lip service to being respectful towards their customers and the customers of their advertisers.

Though, I went to the local Chamber’s dinner recognizing the restarting of work on the Kensington Mine last week and Governor Parnell was there to give a bit of a speech and do some grip and grin as were Rep. it’s the scumbags being sent there. God knows I get enough of this here. You can sit in, say, Fletcher’s Bar in Anchorage, a kind of a movers and shakers place, and if you want have a pretty good political discussion with somebody who might actually know their this from their that, you can have one. In the first ten minutes of that conversation you’re going to get, “Juneau did this,” Juneau did that.” Well, Juneau has two of forty House members and one of twenty Senate members; “JUNEAU” ain’t done nothing to you. The Governors of Alaska have been successively; an Anchorage lobbyist and former Senator, the former Mayor of Wasilla – the meth and redneck capital of Alaska, a Fairbanks and Ketchikan banker – and former three term US Senator, a two term former mayor of Anchorage, an Anchorage hotelier and developer, and former Governor, a Fairbanks lawyer, an Anchorage hotelier and businessman, a Dillingham bush pilot, and a Valdez professional politician. Now what was it that Juneau did to you?

It’s the same thing with DC; it ain’t DC, it’s the people that get sent there.

It probably wouldn't hurt to rotate legislative body

Achance (Diary) Friday, October 30th at 10:28AM EST (link)

meetings. Moving the Executive is a much different thing. Wherever the Governor or President might be, the cabinet is going to need to be, then all the operating agency heads are going to need to be where the Secretary/Commissioner are, and they’re all going to need support staff. That’s a lot of people and a lot of disruption every time you “rotate” the executive branch. Plus, once you get below the elected and appointed official level, there’s a lot to be said for having experienced people who actually know how to push the rope.

I know there are 1st Am. issues, but the one thing that I think would do more for the honesty and relevance of government at every level would be to prohibit radio and television advertising. In many markets, that is the bulk of the expenditures and electronic media advertising is the basis of policy determinations being made on 15 second soundbites and pure emotion. Buying all those commercials is the reason most polticians spend most of their time hustling money and the reason people who can raise money have so much influence.

Another thing that might help would be to prohibit fund raising events outside the district. That gets away from the speech and association issues involved with prohibiting contributions from outside the district but puts a real crimp on the bundlers, lobbyists, and interest groups’ ability to throw a fundraiser in the capital or in some swank place where the candidate/officeholder is more free from the surly bonds of those provincials back in the district. How many times has some political figure been hoisted from his “ill-considered” remarks in some place that he thought they were well-considered but then the folks in the district heard about it.

The money is the root of the campaign evil...

nessa (Diary) Friday, October 30th at 11:01AM EST (link)

…nothing we do will have any effect until we can separate pols from money. Raising campaign money has become a year-round, term-long focus and that has allowed those who can provide large sums access and special favors. If we can remove the need for the money we can remove the bundlers, the behind-the-curtain backers, and a whole host of evils. Of course now that our political aristocracy has tasted the fruits of the campaign donation bribes and we have allowed them to pay off their donors/bribers our political aristocrats certainly aren’t going to vote themselves off the teat. If we are able to re-take the house, or gain power of any significance campaign and ethics reform has to be a priority, done quickly before the newly elected are sullied by their peers.

I do have a problem with my Congresscritter holding a fundraiser in your district. I also have a Helluva problem with bundlers. Now I don’t pretend to know the answer and maybe there isn’t one. In that case, the best course is no limits but complete disclosure and really stiff penalties under the criminal statutes with no administrative proceeding underlying it. I mean…if I’m Pro Life, I’ll go to National Right To Life Committee to get funds to run for office…If I’m Pro Choice…I’ll go To NARAL or Planned Parenthood…those committees aren’t going to influence my positions…they will just help me get in a position where I can affect change based on my position on those issues.

I’m far more concerned with getting these politicians out of the isolated bubble they’re in…and away from the Peer Pressure to be left of center and pro central government than I am worried about where they get their money…so long as I know where their money comes from.

It's the climate and the peer pressure there...

AceInTX (Diary) Friday, October 30th at 11:51AM EST (link)

You’re right…changing the location wouldn’t help…but it’s I contend it’s not just the people…how many times have we sent good people there who are rooted in good principles and right ideas…and withing 10 years of being there…they turn.

I’ll put up Lyndsey Graham as an example…I loved the guy when he was in the House..particularly on Clinton’s health care legislation…I think he was solid on Al Gore’s Carbon Tax if I remember correctly…he was out front and he led on issue after issue…and I can’t remember now…a single issue where I ever disagreed with him..

Then he’s been there now for what…20 years? or there about?…I don’t even recognize the man…he’s in your face and off on his own crusades and the people he is supposed to represent are just an inconvenience to him that has to be pandered to every 6 years!

I think it’s all that time up there being rold by a bunch of ass kissing staffers, and back slapping lobbyists how great you are…and having all your friends from the cocktail circuit and the charismatic pimps from the press influencing you and luring you to go along so you’ll be more popular with them.

I’m serious…I think there should be a move toward a Const5itutional Amendment that would add to the requirement for a person to serve as the people’s or the state’s representative, that you have to reside in the state or district that you represent at least 181 days out of the year. The idea that I can get elected out of district 20 in Texas and move my family to Washington and only come home every two years to kiss babies and pander for votes from my district is ridiculous in this day and age when you can hop on a plane and go from DC to LA in a day

Don't know how much transcontinental flying you've done, Ace,

Achance (Diary) Friday, October 30th at 12:32PM EST (link)

but I’ve done a lot and it sure ain’t something you’d want to do every week. More than once I’ve flown all night and went to work on the East Coast that morning; you’d best be really young and healthy to do much of that. When I came to be in charge, I simply wouldn’t let my people do it because I wanted them sharp for whatever they were going back east to do. I made them go a day early just so they could catch up and adjust; there’s a reason the West Coast football teams usually do so poorly in the Eastern Time Zone.

It may be a four hour flight from LAX to DCA, but it is also three time zones so it’s effectively a seven hour flight. Throw in two hours or more for the commute, checking, and screening, and an hour or more to get to your hotel or DC home and you have ten hours or more for that trip. On the obscure chance that I became a member of Congress and wanted to get back to Juneau for the weekends, on the way to DC, I pretty much have to leave here Sunday afternoon or evening and spend the night in Seattle then take the morning n/s to Reagan. That’s an all day flight, so there goes Monday; hope nothing important was happening. Then to get back to JNU, I have to leave DCA Friday morning, fly to LAX, change planes, fly to SEA, change planes, fly SEA to JNU and I get there about 10 PM, assuming everything is on time and all the connections work. Now that ain’t something I’d want to do real often. I think Don Young pushes it by maintaining an essentially uninhabitable trailer as his domicile in Ft. Yukon and only coming home for the requisite grip and grins, but I don’t hold it against Sen. Murkowski or Sen. Stevens before her for not coming home real often. Don’t know what Begich will do but I suspect he’ll be so happy in Comrade Obama’s DC, that he’ll never come home again until re-eletion time. Then he’ll lose and like Gravel before him, the last Democrat to serve in DC, he’ll never be seen in Alaska again.

Back to what you were saying, having a residence in the DC area and in the district live in, makes you think that you represent 2 places instead of the one that your elected too. It’s just doesn’t work well. What we really need to do is elected a person that states that they are not up there to make friends, but to listen to what the constituents want. It doesn’t seem to be happening at all. Also, no more swanky offices for congressmen/congresswomen. All this nice office space has gone to their heads. (Link deliberately not provided)

I think kos also makes a reasonable case that his past “endorsement” of Dede was strictly tactical as opposed to affirmative.

(Though not having the stomach to go back to his earlier posts, I can’t affirm that he isn’t rewriting history.)

(Of course, that doesn’t negate that Dede’s politics are a clean fit with the Democratic party. Kos also ignores that real likelihood that Dede will switch parties in the near future, given past reports that she was mulling a switch not too long ago.)

So at this point, let’s retire the “Kos endorses Dede” line and focus on the “Doug can win” theme.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis
