This is not DOOM for Coakley. Yet. [Updated and bumped]

Further UPDATE: More from PPP here, via AoSHQ.  You can sign up here to phone bank for Scott Brown.

(Comments now enabled.)

But PPP is tweeting out a warning. They’re unabashedly a Democratic-aligned firm, but PPP played it straight in Virginia and New Jersey last year: if they say that Massachusetts is looking doable, then Massachusetts is looking doable.

Scott Brown for Senate.

Crossposted to Moe Lane.

UPDATE: And now the Democrats are push-polling?  Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Afraid we've woken up the Dems too soon

Maureenthetemp Friday, January 8th at 2:47PM EST (link)

We may have woken up the Dems too soon. Well, I’m going by Hottie McAwesome’s site and give anyway, let’s make her at least get into debt and fight for it –

Or too late, as the case may be.

Third Street (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 2:52PM EST (link)

Coakley is only now starting to actually run a race. For the last several months she (and everybody else) assumed she had it sewed up, and thus did nothing. Brown has been running hard that whole time.

In the Internet Age it’s nearly impossible for a race to be a total surprise upset on Election Night. But I’m feeling very confident about Brown.

This is what I fear as well.

Brian_Roastbeef (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 3:07PM EST (link)

This election is starting to get nationalized and that is only going to weaken the chances of pulling out the upset. I think its the same thing that ultimately lost NY-23. A little bit of support from some national figures helped Hoffman gain a lot, but too much and it swung to Owens…

This is Massachusetts. A full national blitz is only going to energize the many many Democrats in that state into making it a rout. I’d rather they stay asleep, but with enough polls and blog posts on the race and even a Democrat strategist will get his head out of his rear and start to take enough action to kill the upset.

I’m still hoping that Coakley takes the traditional New England strategy… that is, sees herself up by 6, gets overconfident and gives the ball away on her own 28 — with Scott Brown playing the role of Peyton Manning.

I call BS...NY 23 was lost by the establishment's arrogance and The Republican who endorsed the Democrat! nt

Quite so, and also...

Third Street (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 3:16PM EST (link)

…because it was a three-way race in which the Republican vote was siphoned off.

Such is not the case here. In fact, it’s Coakley who may be subject to vote siphoning if this “Kennedy” guy on the ballot confuses any significant number of Democrat halfwits.

Ace, I'm not saying that Scozzafava was a good candidate.

Brian_Roastbeef (Diary) Saturday, January 9th at 5:36AM EST (link)

In fact, she was terrible, and showed her true colors when she backed Owens in the end. I’m not trying to tout the typical RINO line here. I believe that supporting Hoffman was the right move.

I’m only saying that, as somebody who lives only a few miles down the road from NY-23 (alas, in 25), I can say that the race got very much nationalized, and that was one of several factors that ultimately lost it for us in the end. Fred Thompson did a lot of good work, without which Hoffman wouldn’t have been in contention. Its only that as more media attention focused on the area, the effort also moved the liberals in the area into getting out for Owens. Do I think that without the Conservative defection Scozzafava could have won? I don’t know and I don’t care; she’d have been as reliable of a vote for Pelosi as Owens is. My only fear is that similar media attention will get the liberals energized into voting for Coakley.

This is Massachusetts – even the conservatives there are in the mold of Mitt Romney rather than Sarah Palin. For us to pull this out needs a quiet campaign which gets conservatives and frustrated independents ready to vote while the liberals stay in the dark. In the end, what swami7774 says below is probably right and it wasn’t realistic that we were going to keep it quiet the whole time. We did benefit from lack of attention and polling for quite a while. In my opinion Rasmussen’s numbers were ideal: close enough that Brown had a chance, but distant enough to keep the Dems thinking that they were safe. In the end, though, it appears that they have caught on, and this makes the fight more difficult from here on out.

Nevertheless, it is not impossible. Possibly NJ is a better model for this than NY-23. The left were well aware of the situation there and didn’t hold back, and we were victorious in the end. I still think Brown is the underdog, but even the fact that we’re making a fight where the left was expecting a walkover is beneficial. In the end, this may not be about defeating Coakley in 10 days. It could be about defeating Bayh or Gillibrand in 10 months.

I agree...we don't need to win the Brown race for it to have an impact...

AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, January 9th at 2:19PM EST (link)

and maybe running under the radar is a great strategy.

Where NY 23 is concerned…I’ve seen this happen to often to sit back quietly when I know how something happened…only to have a whisper campaign works on the conventional wisdom to the point where history is re-written in favor of the leftist/Rino point of view.

Scozzafava endorsed the Democrat….I’m sure many of her supporters voted for Owens out of Spite…while others voted for De De anyway so as to deny Hoffman the election.

Hoffman and DeDe’s votes combined were enough to defeat Owens and I have little doubt had DeDe endorsed Hoffman and campaigned for him in the end and not endorsed Owens the seat would still be R…and will be R again in November.

But I won’t concede in any way or sit quietly by while the meme that it was conservatives who gave that seat to the Dems is advanced and neither should any conservative!

There was no way...

swami7774 (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 4:54PM EST (link)

…to keep this race under the radar the entire time. Sooner or later indications that Brown was doing well would leak out and get the Dems’ attention.
This is the ultimate turnout election. If Brown can maximize his turnout in areas like Plymouth County and Cape Cod(where I live, and people are energized with a capital “E”), he can make this close or even pull it off.
The unions will pull out all the stops for Coakley, as will the media–although they have been unusually fair so far.
I still think this race is Coakley’s to lose, but I don’t see a 20-point blowout.

Today, there is a name for the political doctrine that rejoices in scarcity of everything except government. The name is environmentalism.

This is race is so VERY important due to the machinations of the LEFTIST Patrick saying he will not confirm Brown if he wins I mean this is about as SOCIALIST as one can get. I cannot believe that the people of MA will ALLOW these tools to continue to treat the citizens as non-entities.

I said on some site yesterday that Coakley disappearing and taking the VOTERS in MA for granted because she has a D after her name is the PROBLEM WE all have in America at this very moment in time and that is the politicians thinking they are King’s & Queen’s and WE are subjects and jesters for their amusement.

If We The People are NOT willing to make REAL CHANGE in EVERY ELECTION then they will continue down this path to a Crown Government instead of a Republic Government! This holds for left & RIGHT because it is NOT moderates who will hold them to their promises it will be the BASE of each party that EXACTS a pound of flesh!

I was looking at Intrade Coakley’s stock is still up pretty high. Don’t get your hopes up, but be pleasantly surprised if this breaks our way. If Brown wins I will literally wear a GWB shirt at the college that I work at.

erod, I am not too worried about intrade...

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 3:17PM EST (link)

the reason why is because if intrade was right we woudn’t be seeing moveon.org sending our an email blast calling for support of Coakley. They are worried, and if you read some of the stuff about her on Kos, that worry is also draped in disenfranchisement with Coakley as the candidate.

Now is not the time to rely on speculative “polling” such as intrade. Now is the time to donate, make phone calls, and get on the streets of Boston to help bring home the win.

You can even download a call sheet from the Brown campaign and make calls from home.

Take action, you will find joy and a sense of pride in contributing to a just, and more importantly winnable cause. Turning the seat red for the first time in 50 years.

Another thing is that Brown’s favorables are around 60% , McDonnell’s were at 55% and Christies were at 43%. The man is popular!

Coakley has a lot of baggage that the informed Democrats know about, thus the relative silence from her during her campaign. The informed voters know about this baggage too. Apparently she went pretty soft on some pedophiles and the people don’t tend to forget that stuff.

Things are shaping up nicely on this. Now we just need to put the act back into activism and actually do something, whether it be donations of time, money, or free press in the blogosphere. Now is the time.

One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

There’s your fundraising tagline. Well spoken!

The modern liberal is defined as one whose sense of guilt has exceeded his capacity for restitution – making it not only forgivable, but morally superior to raid someone else’s larder to pay his bottomless debt.

Or this...

“What can Brown do for you?” Oh, never mind. That one’s taken.

1. Compared to what?
2. At what cost?
3. What hard evidence do yo have?

The Last Sentence of PPP Article is THE MOST IMPORTANT.

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 4:40PM EST (link)

“Complacency is the Democrats’ biggest enemy at this point and something that needs to be overcome to avoid a potential disaster. ”

Brown has all the Republicans. He has 2/3 of independents. Yet. Martha is still leading. He needs to win Democrats or get them to stay home. National activists need to consider that.

Brown has won nine election in a row. He knows how to win here. And he is doing right now, by not agitating the left.

The base needs to ramp it up in Plymouth County, Upper Cape, Blackstone Valley, suburban Worcestor, Merrimac Valley and the NH border.

Messing around in other places is like wacking a hornets nest. Let it be.

And people calling, especially outsiders, don’t need the fire and brimstone, Democrats are evil attitude, if the are phone banking independents.

I high suggest that outsiders use Republican lists exclusively. Fire up the base and GOTV. Winning Indies requires tact and a local touch.

But as this race goes national, I’m hearing a lot of wacky stuff.

Swamp, I here Rudy will be going to MA to campaign for Brown...

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 4:48PM EST (link)

So this is no doubt a national race at this point and will be seen as a referendum on HCR for sure. How do you think Rudy will play with the indie vote in MA?

Not Sure; GOP Seems To Think That Coakley Will Breal Out Big Guns if Polls Show More Mo' For Brown

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 5:05PM EST (link)

If you see a Bill Clinton or a John Kerry, they may throw a big gun of their own.

I think Rudy will go over okay. It really depends on the content though. I said it would take a perfect storm and this Knicker Bomber thing is a blessing.

It has more legs than I imagined and its a real strong point for Scott. Could be good timing for Rudy too. If Rudy is the twinkle toe Rudy that’s funny and self-depricating and talks about reform, corruption and safety, it could work well.

If Rudy gets to bellicose, and too punchy and insults popular Democrats like Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, or Obama it could backfire.

Believe it or not, Obama and Kerry are still popular here.

Well, hopefully anyone talking up Brown is doing so on issues...

Aaron Gardner (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 5:15PM EST (link)

There is no point in linking to Kerry or Obama other than tangentially as it arises in actually policy. Focus on the issues of NatSec, Fiscal and HCR and I think he will be good.

I may go down next week to support Brown and do some blogging.

Paul Kirk came out to endorse Coakley.

joayn (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 5:56PM EST (link)

The GOP in MA cried foul ’cause Kirk had agreed not to come out for any candidate as a condition of his temp seat.

Other than him, Vicki Kennedy and the two “I’m not running” Kennedy guys, I haven’t heard of any “star” Democrat supporting her. Sounds like a job for Joe Biden. His mother passed away today but I’m sure he can squeeze in some campaigning for the Dems next week. Too late, too little?

I think Martha and the Dems really blew it.

All 10 Reps are Dems and none of them are under any pressure.

I think HCR is a secondary issue here. People are both sides are frustrated with the process, but most people here are okay with government managed care. Much of it is redundant anyway. So its an additional layer of money and beaurocracy.

But the tax part stings. The tax on cadillac plans affects the unions. We’ve had it with taxes. Sales went to 6.25, while NH is still 0.00. Northern Mass cities look like ghost towns.

telling the truth to pollsters – they don’t trust who’s asking the questions. With the push-polling gig going on, can’t say I blame them. Anyway, they are answering that they’ll vote for Martha but they’re not. They’re going to vote for Brown.

Plus, Brown is doing most of his campaigning in Democrat districts and getting a great response. So I believe Brown is much closer to Coakley than Rasmussen’s poll from Monday night.

And, if people check out Joe Kennedy, he’s a Libertarian, and that’s just nuts. On his website he claims to be the “Tea Party” candidate, but the group behind him is called the Boston Tea Party, and they’re Libertarian nut jobs. He’ll get muscle-memory votes from Dems, screwing up Martha’s plans for sure.

There are also thousands of Democrats from out of state who are working for Brown and donating.

Interesting Comment From "Walt" of Boston on Coakley

Ausonius (Diary) Friday, January 8th at 5:14PM EST (link)

In the article from PPP I found this comment, which would seem to be genuine and not a Trojan Horse from a Republican:

“Walt – Boston said…

As a dyed in the wool Democrat who did not vote for Coakley in the primary and has never voted for a Republican for a US Senate seat, I am having a difficult time thinking about pulling the lever for her. I always vote, and will continue my tradition of not supporting the GOP for this Senate seat. However, I am leaning toward writing in the name of “Gerald Amirault”, one of the people caught up in the Fells Acres witch hunt years ago. Coakley did not do the right thing when she had the opportunity with regard to this case. I realize a write in vote is a vote for the Republicans and Mitch McConnell, but if Brown somehow gets elected, I’m hoping a respectable Dem will challenge him in two years and get the seat back. Otherwise I have to see Coakley on TV for the next 30 years representing me in the Senate. And yes, I do realize this is the 60th vote in the Senate. I’ve never been so pained by an upcoming vote, but I cannot in good conscience vote for Coakley.”

If Walt represents old-time Dems who “always vote” then this is obviously a good sign.

Has everyone else noticed how in the last year the word “unexpectedly” has been used in reference to MAObama’s situation?

“Unexpected” terrorist attacks, “unexpected” jumps in unemployment, “unexpected” lack of coöperation from foreign governments, “unexpected” rise in property foreclosures, etc.

It would be nice to read that Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts was also “unexpected” !!! :)

Brown Has Generated Excitement

We have this going for us:

Democratic apathy.
Republican excitement.

We have this against us:

Labor unions. They are huge in this state. Although I think some members will either stay home or vote for Brown because their health care plans are going to be taxed by Obamacare.

Field report

1stRichard (Diary) Saturday, January 9th at 12:08AM EST (link)

Rally and Standout for Scott Brown for U.S. Senate WGBY Studios Springfield Debate
The Coakley’s arrived early with a truckload of big signs all huddled in a small group on the corner. Some of the patches they had on seemed to indicate they were union. Most striking was some had on their typical liberal/progressive elitist attire, the cashmere scarf and overcoat. As time went on the Brown brigade started to show up in force, up one block and all the way down the other. In addition to those crowding out Coakley’s the Brown Brigade was overwhelming. When Scott Brown arrived he walked the ranks thanking everyone. But where was Coakley, apparently she sneaked in the back way or got there early to avoid the cameras and her supporters. Standing there with my sign I found my self amongst many Democrats saying they are fed up with the taxes, unemployment and socialism, explaining Coakley was no Democrat. They are fed up with the status quo and blaming Bush. In contrast, there was a Coakley supporter standing on the corner with one of those Bush masks with a sign saying Bush supports Brown. As for the Kennedy supporters, I could not find any. That truckload of big Coakley signs was not needed because there was no one to hold most of them.

Directions for dealing with MA Democrats

Democrats, traditional Democrats want to go back toward the center and have already jumped off a sinking ship. They are fed up with the taxes and with the status quo so many are voting for Brown and so should you. One step over the line to the left of constitutional center is where the Democrat Party was. The status quo Coakley wants to go further left with more taxes and less freedom, we need job now and not more taxes, and further in debt with cap and trade and healthcare that will kill jobs.
