Based on Vice Admiral Gortney’s briefing, here’s what happened:
1. The Navy was given a specific set of circumstances in which they could take the necessary action.
2. Being tired of being the laughing stock of the world, the on scene commander determined those criteria had been met.
I know how the game is played, and what happened, and believe me, the result today was the result of someone with the brains to adhere to the letter of the law while violating the spirit of the law to do what needed to be done. It happens in the military from time to time, and usually the results are positive enough to preclude punishment.
In other words, today’s success was enabled not by Obama’s good efforts, but by his failure to tie the commander’s hands as tightly as he thought he had.
That pretty much sums up in two points and two paragraphs what Caleb and I took far longer to say.

The AP spin has already begun

But the real knee-slapper is this one:
Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.
No credit to Bush for Iraq, Obama

RJD (Diary) Monday, April 13th at 10:43PM EST (link)this is a huge victory. not in their wildest dreams would this ever turn out this way (they disdain the military. it can do no right). Have the Liberals on TV (pundits and their handlers*) thanked the Navy on its own merit? I’m sure some outlets have. But, I’m watching for backhanded compliments and the negative angle dressed up as concern (ie. how can we turn these soldiers into bad guys or victims?).
Don’t forget, also, that Liberals are natural bullies.

To repeat from a comment on one of those stories...
fishbreath (Diary) Monday, April 13th at 2:26PM EST (link)I’m afraid military success in spite of the Obama administration is going to become the norm.
really?
xjudson Monday, April 13th at 2:52PM EST (link)The administration has been fairly quiet about this. I see no evidence of chest thumping or bragging.
The world is all that is the case.
Because chest-thumping always lead to more questions, something Obama isn't good at answering them...
Cheetah772 (Diary) Monday, April 13th at 3:55PM EST (link)Of course, that’s just opinion of a conservative who doesn’t like Obama in the first place….
Daniel 2:20 And he [God] changeth the times and seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding.
No evidence of chest thumping?
mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, April 13th at 3:56PM EST (link)Heh. You obviously don’t read the AP, the NYT, the WaPo or pay attention to the Obama News Network do you. The WH doesn’t have to say anything, they’ve got the bankrupt media.
Now what do we do with the one we got?
red4ever (Diary) Monday, April 13th at 3:55PM EST (link)There is one pirate in custody. All of sudden everyone is worried about the guy’s age. Turns out he might be under 18. This is the one that was onboard the Bainbridge negotiating the ransom. My opinion, if he is old enough to be trusted to negotiate with the US Navy alone, then he is old enough to be tried as an adult.
This is not to say that there are not children forced by the pirates to commit crimes. Those we need to rescue and protect. But, I don’t think this one is one of those.

NY Post solves the problem.
GT350 Monday, April 13th at 6:06PM EST (link)I like this solution from the NY Post:
“Historically, civilized nations understood how to handle pirates: When captured, pirates were hanged. When found, their bases were destroyed. That worked.
Yeah, “citizens of the world” will cry that “You can’t just hang pirates!” Sure you can. It’s easy. If you’re short of rope, wire will do. The only serious question arises once the noose is around the pirate’s throat: Should we drop him over the side and let the rope snap his neck, or raise him up on a spar and let him suffocate slowly?”
I prefer the English solution
red4ever (Diary) Monday, April 13th at 6:09PM EST (link)Stake the pirate out just above the low tide line. Then wait for high tide. The sea claims it own.

And what do we do with him when the pirates manage to kidnap an American and get him to shore
bk (Diary) Monday, April 13th at 4:12PM EST (link)You know they’ll be looking for a chance to do it. The norm in that region seems to be the Palestinian-Israeli model of “we’ll trade you the one soldier we murdered after we captured and tortured him for a few hundred live terrorists in prison cells”.
Parallels to May 2001, eight years ago.
garyg Monday, April 13th at 4:13PM EST (link)Meh, this is still a better outcome than the American tourists held hostage for ransom by the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group in the Philippines May 2001, only to be beheaded the next month due to zero military response or public objection from President Bush himself. Sad it took Sept. 11 for the White House to even investigate Abu Sayyaf’s ties and intelligence to the Al Qaeda network.
Correction: Bush paid the Abu Sayyaf $3 million to release the other two Americans after the first one was beheaded.
So tiresome

commentperson Tuesday, April 14th at 7:51PM EST (link)Alert – Obama supporter.
Jeff: You told us a couple days ago that Cap’n Phillips was rescued when he jumped off the life boat a second time and the Seals then took out the pirates. This was not accurate. You also told us that that the Navy did not did not take out the pirates when Captain Phillips earlier dove off the lifeboat because the guidance from President Obama prevented it and further that, when the pirates fired on a Navy vessel, Navy personnel did not return fire because of lack of clear guidance from Washington and because of orders from Obama’s staff not to act. These “facts” appear to have been made up. If you have sources for these, please let us know what they are. And now you tell us that the on-scene commander took advantage of Obama’s failure to tie his hands as tightly as Obama had intended. How do you know this? It seems pretty obvious that you know no such thing but we would, of course, welcome your documentation of these facts.

commentperson Tuesday, April 14th at 9:20PM EST (link)You know, I would really truly like to find a space where people of completely opposing views could actually talk to each other. The bottom line for such a space for me: facts matter. And the most important thing about facts: recognizing what one does not know. I don’t think Redstate is that space (or Keith Olbermann – this is not an ideological thing). Any suggestions?

and I am sure you are looking for Jeff to respond to your questions and I am sure he will when he gets a chance. I seldom believe press releases regarding actual military operations other than the cause and the outcome, especially the details of the military’s SOPs will be omitted from the press release from the Pentagon.
