I’m so tired of hearing the media reiterate in revelatory tones what an insult it is to hurl shoes at someone in Iraq. Was this in doubt? Were people sitting around asking  “I wonder if that was meant negatively. Do you think dear?” And their spouses replying “Why I’m not sure, I hadn’t considered that!” I picture the moment of startled realization, “in fact it IS insulting to hurl shoes in Iraq, Bob! CNN must have been right about the war all along because that dude TOTALLY hurled shoes at President Bush. What a fool I’ve been!”

I’ve got news for the news, hurling shoes at someone is rather insulting here in the United States, too. I don’t reckon I’d have any question about the particular feeling someone had for me at the moment they decided it would be a good idea to take off their shoes and hurl them at me. I figure I’d be pretty clear on the subject right from the get-go. Soon as I saw the toe lining up at my face. With footgear in flight and face-bound, I don’t suppose I’d be standing there pondering “Hmmmm, I wonder if this is some sort of tremendous honor.”

The shoe guy was mad and he threw his shoe. This is not meant to be some type of spontaneous lifetime achievement award. We get it, already.
