I’ve felt since the FL Primary that McCain is going to be the next President. Obama and Hillary the only two real Dem contenders at that point were just too inexperienced. Right now he is basically tied when he should be several points behind. As we get closer to the election and Americans become more familiar with Obama, particularly his complete lack of executive, business, or military experience, his poll numbers will continue to decline.
This gives McCain a chance to make an unconventional choice for VP without looking desperate (ala Mondale picking Ferraro).
If he should pick a woman that will lead to some votes from Hillary supporters and it just might slightly increase votes for Republicans overall this year.
More importantly, an unconventional pick and by that, I mean Not the same old type of Republican, would lead to a rethink by many women, some minorities, and even on the fence non-minority guys about what the Republican Party is. Right now, we can’t point to anybody on the national ticket ever being anything other than a middle aged or old non-minority guy. Dems have both Ferraro and Obama to point at and at least one serious female contender in Hillary.
Obviously the next question is who should he pick. My favorite by far is Bobby Jindal followed by Sarah Palin. I’m not sure either one of them has been vetted. Colin Powell would also fit this bill to some degree, but having a guy on the ticket, the same race as the unique Democratic nominee, may seem like too obvious of a move to counter Obama.
Kay Bailey Hutchison, would be another possible choice. There are others, but none of them have ever seemed to be in the mix.

Redbirdfan (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 1:42PM EST (link)I took out the references to white people in the original post.
Fair or unfair, most people see the Republican Party as primarily of the majority and then mostly males. One of the ways to change that perception is to nominate a VP with outstanding capabilities but who also happens to be a minority or a woman.
Lets face it there are many people out there who could do a credible job as VP and in the end this is about politics and has little or nothing to do with fairness. So why not take advantage of the situation to help change people’s perception of the Republican Party.

Ultimately one would hope to choose the best “person” for a position – especially with McCain – which entails becoming president of the United States in the blink of an eye.
Other considerations (e.g. “image” or whatever) ought not to be involved.
But we know that they probably will be involved.
One can debate the claim that
“many people” are out there qualified to be vice-president, which in my definition means that they are also qualified to be president. Quite frankly I am distressed by the lack of public talent on the conservative side right now.
Note the stress: I believe the talent is out there, but remains private.

For this reason, Whitman and Fiorina are complete non-starters.
BTW, it’s also the reason Obama is a non-starter (and the reason he picked Biden).
Do we really want McCain to choose someone without any government and foreign policy experience? If we do, then be ready for the democrats to come back and say, “See, even McCain admits that foreign policy experience isn’t an absolute necessity”.

Right! Nobody "Runs" the Gummint Or...
Strelnikov (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 5:21PM EST (link)…the economy.
Read Winston Churchill’s comments on “running” the much smaller ship of state of England when he was prime minister.
The main things a president can propose are tax policy and spending policy.
The time delay in the results can mean that a 2-year election cycle will be over before things can improve or deteriorate. But that depends on the percentages involved. In either case, it will be a slow process as the effects wind through the economy. (As a general statement).
One of the myths of the 90′s as to why Clinton should be tolerated was that “he’s done a good job running the economy.”
I heard this chant again and again from Democrat colleagues on my faculty, people whom I formerly thought had triple-digit I.Q.’s.
Clinton did not run the economy: it was the tax policy of the Gingrich Congress which made Clinton look half-way decent as a guardian of the economy.
The American People are the ones running the economy!
It remains unclear to me who runs the gummint, but I fear it is “faceless bureaucrats”!

Faceless on the national political scene and
Achance (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 5:41PM EST (link)in the media, but not inside the government. The high-level ‘crats just below the appointees run the government. Administrations come and go, but the bureaucracy goes on forever, and most of that level of the bureaucracy are Democrats. That’s why it is so damnably difficult for a Republican Administration to ever even get anything done, not to speak of change anything.
There are so many appointee slots in the federal government, and even in most state governments, that no Republican chief executive could ever find enough qualified, loyal Republicans to even fill the appointee slots. At most they applique a thin veneer of sometimes competent high-level appointees over a Democrat government and then wonder why they’re thwarted, sabotaged, and leaked to death for four years.
If a Republican is ever to successfuly govern the US, or even most states, the governments must be reorganized into larger, broader organizational units that require far fewer appointees. It ain’t nearly as sexy and fun as debating political philosophy, but it is the key to making the kinds of changes in government that most here would desire.

Of course he can. The very first thing John McCain should do,
Achance (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 6:02PM EST (link)within milliseconds of his hand coming off The Bible, is fire every single appointee in the federal government. Now, of course, he’ll be told that that would be too disruptive, but I assure you that the very hardest thing you could do would be to stop a government from running. Besides, government runs in spite of political appointees, not because of them. The only people who’d miss the fired appointees would be lobbyists, reporters, and Democrat operatives. A position is much better left vacant than to have a holdover appointee in it. Then, he finds as many loyal and competent, no Mike Browns, Republicans as he can and puts them where he intends to make significant change. The rest of the government can just stay on autopilot with the merit system employees running it. It’s pretty simple stuff; all you gotta’ do is know how and be willing to do it.

Pawlenty would be best
James Burlington (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 6:26PM EST (link)In my opinion, Pawlenty would be the best VP for pick for McCain. Such a choice would attract a lot of evangelical Christian votes. I am an evangelical Christian conservative myself, and I will vote for McCain no matter who he chooses for VP. Just the fact that McCain is pro-life and pro-national security is enough for me to vote for him.
I doubt Rigde could turn Pa red because he’s been out of office for a long time and the current Pa governor is a hard-core Obama supporter. Ridge is also pro-choice which might be a little risky for McCain’s campaign. I can’t believe that Lieberman is being considered.
I have nothing against Romeny, in any event I like Pawlenty the best of all these choices.Pawlenty might even turn Minnesota red.
I think Palin is OK, but she isn’t very experianced. What if McCain gets elected, and later on dies in office?
If things turn out that way, the VP will have a load of hay fall on him or her, and it needs to be someone who can handle it (I don’t think Palin could).
Pawlenty seems to be the only one who measures up to all the requirements of an ideal VP choice. I hope and pray that he get chosen, and that McCain will win.
James Burlington

kat (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 10:46PM EST (link)but the current PA governor (Rendell) is a hard core CLINTON supporter who is now saying unity, unity, unity.
I also disagree with you on the Ridge issue. As a PAer, I can tell you that I know of no one personally that has a bad word to say about him. Most speak of his solid governance and how much he is missed. He was a very popular governor, won re-election by 26% (in a state that had voted for Clinton in ’96).
Under Ridge, our state finances were great and because of his leadership, we didn’t go through the troubles many states did with funding Medicaid (even though our poverty population is high). He could help swing Western PA (including Pittsburgh), where he is hugely popular and would also be a huge hit in the mainly conservative NE and Central parts of the state, offsetting Obama’s huge advantage in Philly.
My feeling – if not Ridge, then it must be Fred. He could rip Biden up one side and down the other in a debate. That would be fun to watch!

Governor Palin is a Maverick Pick.
shadowtax (Diary) Monday, August 25th at 10:56PM EST (link)But not because she is a woman. If anything, a woman on the ticket will push those identity voters back into the Democrat fold. Minorities and women only “count” if they are liberal. Deep down I do not believe that these voters want to see a Republican as the first female Vice President.
The Palin pick focuses the energy debate. It provides political cover for McCain to switch his position and support opening ANWR to oil exploration.
Although serving as Alaska’s Governor a mere two years, she has more experience than Barack Obama. Looking at the two tickets side by side, the contrast will be clear to the casual voter that the Obama-Biden ticket is upside-down.
Furthermore, I get no sense that she has Presidential ambitions. Voters may find that refreshing.

Palin should be on the national stage representing conservative women, not to attract Clinton voters
nogyro35 (Diary) Tuesday, August 26th at 12:04AM EST (link)I agree completely that choosing Palin would not help with older established liberal women.
We have seen it time and again. Liberals do not support conservative women or minorities. They attack them viciously as a threat.
McCain should pick her anyway because…
Oil needs to be pushed more and she would do a great job.
Conservative women could use a bigger voice in todays politics and she would help fill that need. I’m not sure if you would call this identity politics. But it just seems that conservative women are under-represented.
As Alaska’s Governor, she remains somewhat far away from the limelight. I’d like to see her on the national stage now.
If this indictment against her is as unnecessary as it sounds, I would like to see a Republican, ANY REPUBLICAN stop running from legal issues brought up by government agencies heavily influenced by Democrats.

SirGladiator (Diary) Tuesday, August 26th at 12:47AM EST (link)I think certain lessons are pretty obvious. Don’t pick a candidate who is going to accentuate your own weaknesses, don’t pick someone who is going to upset millions of women, don’t pick somebody with a track record of comments attacking the top of the ticket, etc.
McCain should pick someone whose strengths will accentuate, and compliment, his own. Governor Palin’s strength on the oil/drilling/ANWR issue compliments and increases McCain’s advantage on that issue, and enables him to change his position on ANWR. Her long time crusade against corruption in Alaskan Government compliments McCain’s own Maverick and anti-Washington corruption message and record. Plus, as we all have heard a million times by now, Obama has a major problem with women voters, and so this is pretty much the best timing there has ever been for the Republican nominee to have a female running mate. In addition to all of that, the very fact that McCain would pick a female running mate would ITSELF play into McCain’s ‘Maverick’ image absolutely perfectly.
So, to touch on something said in a previous comment, it really doesnt matter whether you like Palin because she’s a solid Conservative who will shore up the base, or you like her because she appeals to Hillary supporters as well as Independent women, or for any of the other reasons, the bottom line is that she does all those things very well, and as such is an ideal choice for a running mate.
well, at least

The non-appointees would be tough.
Achance (Diary) Tuesday, August 26th at 7:15AM EST (link)But, if you take away the appointees above them that protect them, most of them will behave. You just make it clear to them that they don’t make policy, they don’t play politics, and they don’t leak, and if they do any of those things, they get fired. Won’t take but a couple of first class firings and they’ll be docile as sheep.

Easy to neutralize, not that hard to eliminate.
Achance (Diary) Tuesday, August 26th at 9:42AM EST (link)It is simply a myth that public employees, even unionized public employees, cannot be disciplined or dismissed.
Democrats have no desire to discipline or dismiss them unless they get crossthreaded with the administration; that will get you fired in a heartbeat and the D-supporting unions will go along with it usually.
Republicans are afraid to fire them because the D-supporting unions make so much noise about the firing. When the Murkowski Administration took office in ’03 after eight years of Democrat misrule, we had terrible morale and thoroughly intimidated supervisors since the unions, mostly the AFSCME unit, had mau-maued them everytime they dared to actually supervise. We went on our public employment version of Operation Phoenix which I styled the Empty Chairs Plan. We took the line supervisors largely out of the loop and used our appointees. If somebody misbehaved, especially union stewards and other activists, a couple of suits from headquarters (my staff) showed up and took that person away never to return. Didn’t take many!

BTW, this is why Governors make better Presidents than Congressmen. They’re used to having to deal with a gaggle of petulant, selfish morons.
The reason McCain will do better than usual in this case is because he’s a Maverick. The man stands for stuff (whether you agree with him or not). He’s also teachable.
Obama will fail catastrophically. The best the guy could do even in congress was vote present.
