Why would a man who just got two big newspaper endorsements including the largest paper in SC decide to drop his presidential bid? Well, I give credit to these moderates— they stick together. This is a clear sign that Romney is in trouble in SC. Huntsman’s support is coming from Romney and the man who worked for Obama has again shown his true colors.
I hate to say this but it is time for conservatives to show the same loyalty to one another. I don’t care how it gets done–draw straws but someone or two someones on the conservative side should at least suspend their campaigns in SC. My thinking is once Romney starts losing he will drop like a stone. Then the conservative candidates can duke it out amongst themselves. WHY???
Republicans don’t like Romney except for the fact they think he can win. Once that is gone–the race is over for him. Why would Republicans like a man who opposed Reagan? Supported Paul Tsongas (a Democrat against HW Bush)? Instituted government health care? Spent $50,000 of his own money to oppose Forbe’s flat tax? Burdened companies with tremendous debt that led many of them to bankruptcy? Required gun owners to pay $100 to buy a gun? Allowed the legislature to include Planned Parenthood but no adoption groups in his health bill?
Romney has been talking like a conservative, but I do not buy it. Let one candidate take Romney down and the floodgates will open and then we can have a conservative on conservative contest. Not a RINO who wants to create government run health care–just at the state level. Romney proposes to fund state provided health insurance through Federal Government. This will give us government run health care carried out by the states at the behest of Washington.

quill67 (Diary) Sunday, January 15th at 10:09PM EST (link)It makes me happy, angry, and sad the words that I wrote.
Happy. Because it is a clear sign Romney is in trouble. Only up 2 points on Gingrich in latest poll.
Angry. Because it shows that the Republican establishment will do whatever is necessary to stop conservatives (even if mild like Gingrich)
Sad. Because if this advice is taken, it is basically asking Perry to give up on SC and I know he is a man of honor and will do what is best for the conservative movement. (I can’t wait to see what he does in Texas in the coming years!)
Romney In Trouble
sethellis Monday, January 16th at 12:32AM EST (link)I highly doubt that Huntsman factors such things into his calculations. He doesn’t think the same way people here do in terms of some sort of interparty battle between moderates and conservatives. In fact, I think he sees himself as a conservative. That’s definitely what his record shows. He simply believes that some of the rhetoric has gone out of the control
Huntsman insider’s claim his reason for dropping out was “He didn’t want to stand in the way of the candidate most likely to beat Barack Obama and turn the economy around.” I interpret those comments this way: “I don’t agree with Mitt Romney’s ideology or record, but he’s better than these yahoos that really only got in to sell books”.
Remember that the RCP average has Romney up 7 points over Gingrich. Add to this the fact that evangelicals are endorsing Santorum who is behind 14 points. Santorum is probably too far behind to win, but his gains would come at Newt’s expense. If you add 2 points from Huntsman, that puts Romney in a very strong position.
I believe that the race will tighten over the next week. However, this idea that Romney is in trouble is just wishful thinking.
I agree with your last sentence, sethellis.
avgjo (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:42AM EST (link)The way most of ‘conservative media’ mishandled Newt and Perry’s comments re: Bain, the way FOX is in the tank for Mitt and the way the establishment is out to force him down our throats, we may well get him.
Then we’ll have all the above-mentioned idiots to thank when he loses big to Obama.
Ceterum autem censeo, Obamaecuram esse delendam.

Romney slips
greyeagle Sunday, January 15th at 10:10PM EST (link)Sometimes when he is talking, he will make little slips that shows he is just a liberal who will say anything to get elected. Conservatives who support him are ignoring who and what he stands for. They should listen better.

znjs (Diary) Sunday, January 15th at 10:18PM EST (link)Granted I knew already that it was over for him. Daddy must of gotten sick of paying the bills. Or he got a nice offer from Romney.
However since it looks like he’ll endorse Romney I don’t see where you get the idea that Romney is in deep trouble. Huntsman was really the only one pulling support away from Romney – I expect his SC to get even larger now. The nomination is all but his now.
Candidates Who Get Big Endorsements Don't Drop Out the Same Day!
quill67 (Diary) Sunday, January 15th at 10:24PM EST (link)Romney obviously has made some deal with him or he really doesn’t want to see a conservative win.

Jon Sr dislikes Romney even more than Jr
elayman Monday, January 16th at 7:56AM EST (link)With The Stare endorsement and a respectable showing in NH, at least the campaign is going out on a high note. SC numbers wouldn’t have been good and the money that Jon had been fund raising for last week most likely wasn’t there from high profile out of state contributors.
His support most likely won’t be transferred to Romney unless Huntsman snags a spot in the administration or something. Conservatives and Independents will stay home and disaffected Democrats will go for Obama. Unbelievable really that the GOP didn’t see a winning game in supporting the most fiscally conservative candidate with the broadest base of appeal and best chance to beat the president.

Newt/Santorum Ticket
nabell87 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 1:17AM EST (link)I have been thinking this way all along. Look, Newt and Santorum get along. They have only had kind things to say about one another all along. Santorum studied Newt’s books and Newt hasn’t said a bad thing about him either. Do I think that either will swallow their pride? NO. There is no way that Santorum would give up especially getting the nod from this Texas evangelical group. I think that he has a larger confidence in himself than what might be warrented right now. And Newt… well Newt stands to do big things in SC or atleast he thinks he does. If Santorum would throw in the towel, and then Newt give him the nod for the VP position and let it slip out to the media, this thing would be long over for Romney, and the media would be singer a much different tune about the outcome of this nomination.

Newt/Santorum... both thrown out of office...just what we need on a ticket..
onemovoter (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 1:56AM EST (link)Please both of them are big government conservatives. It’s well documented here at RS, although Santorum is more big government than Newt is on the social side, and Newt is bigger gov on the environmental/education side.
Newt right now is showing his weakness. Once someone gets under his skin, he will go after them with a vengeance. Obama will no doubt see this and use it to great advantage.
Santorum is having big difficulties getting on ballots in even more states that are coming up. He doesn’t have the organization needed to get very far, and probably wasn’t expecting to get past Iowa.
Perry is the only one that is hitting their stride and has the national organization to go against Romney and win. His record can’t be touched by Obama either. That is what we need for a candidate for Republicans. Newt and Santorum should drop and back Perry but they are too selfish to do so.
It’s just a shame that tea-party types are falling for the wrong candidates. When the big thing with tea party folks is following the constitution and reducing spending, they go for the big government types that are only slightly better than Obama. That aggravates me to no end.

Huntsman is dropping out and endorsing Romney (aren’t we surprised, not), I envision Santorum doing the same eventually, Newt’s baggage weighs about 4,000 pounds, Romney is just too yuck with LOTS of baggage himself, Paul – PFFFFFT – soooo, guess who is left standing? PERRY! It won’t be easy, it is going to be a battle, but he can and will take it to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!
Keep the faith, ‘voter! This is a “get ‘er done” situation!
pttx
trevorb (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:14AM EST (link)wish I had your confidence, because he doesn’t seem to be getting much traction. Perry’s gotten a little, but nowhere near what he needs to win.
Course, Gingrich’s personal problems are an issue, in addition to the very ugly turn he’s now taken. His biggest flaw is his arrogance.
Mr. trev! Confidence is something you learn as you
pttx333 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:28AM EST (link)age – it is a thing of learning to trust your instincts, and I cannot betray myself by ignoring them. I KNOW that I have the right choice, and I’m not backing down. The only way I will is if HE says it is over. Other than that, it ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings.
Oh, there is arrogance galore on the debating stage – the only one who isn’t is Perry. He is confident, but that is not anything comparable to arrogance. This is going to be ugly, but we can and will make it to the end. It is do-or-die time for our beloved country and we must make a stand. Each and every little vote counts. And remember to think of the tortoise and the hare story – with Perry as the tortoise. Steady, hard-working, honest, smart, patriot, and throw in all the perfect creds … the tortoise always wins!
Wish I could wave a magic wand to help you, trev, but it broke years ago.
Other than that, just keep the faith and keep on the pathway … steadily plodding along is how you get a field plowed, you know.
perhaps
trevorb (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:43AM EST (link)but I think Gingrich is the worst. it’s kind of a shame, because he’s one of the more tolerable, but this is his ugly side, and I’ve lost a lot of respect for him.
Perry’s made a come-from-behind victory before. We’ll see if he can do so again. I’m hoping he can, because I think he can prepare us for what our country’s about to face.
Gingrich is really a strange guy in a lot of ways.
pttx333 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:57AM EST (link)I don’t dislike him, and I think he is very smart. Sometimes he comes across as the condescending type who thinks we, the unwashed masses, are just too stupid so he will tell us what to do. I don’t like that from anyone. But, truth be known, I had rather have him than Romney, Santorum, et al. It is just that I don’t want to have to vote for him.
In this election, this is another thing I see. We’re going to have to concentrate on two things: (1) economy/jobs and (2) defense. Who has take care of those things without batting an eye or flinching or “studying on it.” That man is Perry. He IS the proverbial conservative stool – not 1 leg, not 2, but all of ‘em! There are FEW who ever meet the criteria. We must put the social issues aside for now, given the shape we are in – no jobs, economy down the tubes, and terrorists with nukes everywhere. We can worry about the other stuff at a later time – social issues won’t really matter a lot if we’re in the streets starving or being blown to bits. Not pretty choices, but there ya go.
These are all my very own opinions, as I see them, trev, so take what you want and throw the rest away. Won’t hurt my feelings one bit.
my focus
trevorb (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 3:01AM EST (link)right now is on the economy. I think it’s likely that we’re going to enter another recession, especially considering the recent news that’s come out of Europe. I’m having no luck finding a job, even though I’ve been looking for months and I’ve far from the only person my age in this situation.
In terms of foreign policy, my eyes are in a direction that most aren’t looking. My focus is on China. Over the past several months, I’ve been watching them with increasing alarm and the more I read and research about what they’re doing, the more concerned I get.
You got it, trev. That's the truth.
pttx333 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 3:06AM EST (link)And I do hope you have some luck with your job hunting. Things are really, really tough – not so tough here in Texas, though. We do still have available jobs.

Perry's Stride??

Maybe it is cuz I’m not a femi-Nazi. Not that she is, but typically women in politics remind me too much of Hitlery. And since I’m a female I can say that!
admittedly
trevorb (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:01AM EST (link)I’m not real fond of her, but the attacks were nothing short of sickening. I didn’t like McCain, either, but I considered him better than Obama. As it turns out, I was right to think that.
Now that Huntsman’s out, how are the non-Romney candidates going to stop him?
With Palin, trev, I despised the attacks on her -
pttx333 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:42AM EST (link)and defended her mightily. They were grossly over the top and morally out of line. I don’t know for sure why I can’t warm up to her – my instincts working again – but I do know that I did NOT like her just-too-cute game of flitting around, leading folks on to think she was running during this election cycle. I thought it was very unbecoming of her.
With McCain, he is just a squish. Yes, he was better than b.o., but he would have been across the aisle most of the time yukking it up with the dems. He also has some baggage. His father and grandfather were big wigs in the Navy (Admirals?), so he joined the Navy and became a pilot. But he was a pretty boy, dashing daredevil who crashed several planes pulling dumb stunts. That is how he was captured and was a POW. Now, I thank him for his service, don’t get me wrong on that, and I am sorry that he was a POW for so long. But … just never did feel confident with him or trust him to do the right thing. He is, indeed, a loose cannon.
Romney is going to be pounded on like nothing you’ve ever seen before. He’s never been vetted before, and Perry was the first one to cross him in one of the debates where the world discovered he has a very fragile glass jaw. Believe me, he is a wimpy spoiled brat who has never been told NO, and he doesn’t like to even be questioned. If you’ll notice him, when he is asked a question he doesn’t like he will respond with a laugh. But look at his eyes. That is another thing, when he smiles, his eyes don’t. Always look at the eyes of anyone to see what is going on there.
Okie dokie, that is my latest sermon. Hope you’re not bored, trev. But I do hope I’m giving a little insight here on RS. Thank you for even asking me questions. I am truly flattered.
it's why
trevorb (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:48AM EST (link)I don’t want Romney as our nominee. Obama will have close to a billion dollars and intends to run the most brutal, vicious campaign in the history of our country. He’s already reacted badly to Perry and I think he considered personal. Obama will do much worse to him.
Unfortunately, absent a major change, I think he’s going to be it. Huntsman was bleeding off some of his support and now he’s gone.
I think they had a deal, trev.
pttx333 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 3:02AM EST (link)I do think they have had a deal all along, and I also think Santorum is in on it. Huntsman and Santorum run, taking votes from Perry (they know Paul and Newt aren’t a threat), then they fold and endorse Romney when their work is done. Ta da! Romney is buying a lot of dirty, dirty tricks – make no mistake. They think Perry has been marginalized and is no threat. Guess again!
Don’t give up, trev, never give up on anything until you must. Go with what you believe is right, and things will fall into place just as planned by God Himself.
at this point
trevorb (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 3:06AM EST (link)it really wouldn’t shock me. The establishment has stated that it is Romney’s turn to run, regardless of whether or not he is qualified for the job. It’s how we received McCain.
Yep! There are other involved in trashing
pttx333 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 3:22AM EST (link)Perry. The Bushies, Rove (on the Bushies behalf – I’ll explain in a minute), Texas trial lawyers (Perry signed a tort reform act and that cuts into their ambulance chasing), teachers’ unions (run by libs), RINOs (afraid for their cushy little fiefdoms in DC when he kicks their butts out), etc.
Now, when I say the Bushies, I mean Bush 41 is trying to build a dynasty. Not sure where W stands here (I voted for him twice, but regretted it the 2nd time), but they feel that Jeb should be the next in line. One of those RINO/GOP establishment goals – they want a prez they can mold who is a squish that will do their bidding. Rove is their hatchet man – despicable little squirt.
Ugly, huh? Perry won’t conform or do anyone’s bidding – he can’t be bought. And they don’t like it one bit, and they’re pushing for Romney HARD.
So … there you have a thumbnail of the dirty, filthy business of politics. But I will still fight with every breath I have, trev. That’s just me.

Yes, ava, you are so right about so many of us can predict what one another is thinking or what they would think about a subject. I think it is amazing – here we are, from all across the land, different cultures, different backgrounds, yet one mindset/though process. How often does that happen?
I remember back in August (I think) when I accidentally stumbled onto RS from a link on another site. Nope, Scope replied to me so very sweetly and welcomed me to RS – and I’ve been here since.

pttx333 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 2:48AM EST (link)oil production mess. Of course oil is a HUGE source of revenue for any state – look at Texas. See, all I ever really knew was that everything was wonderful and just marvy in Alaska because she had turned everything around. Good grief! How did she p*ss away the windfall, ‘shooze? What’s up with that?
You’ve gotta reveal more as we go down the road. I truly want to know from one who knows the full scoop! Thanks for the info!
I, too, wore the uniform of cheerleader about a thousand years ago and still have my letters! How ’bout that?
Sarah isn't a cheap date. ( God bless her )
snowshooze (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 4:26PM EST (link)She hit big with the Tea Party by preaching to the choir.
Conservative social pinciples.
She is a very motivated and talented lady. She is an inspirational speaker.
She has that special talent… and she is pure 100% girl.
She is unbelievable in sales.
But… to those of us who live in Alaska, and are familliar with the way she Governed… she is Tax-n-Spend in a big, big way.
I would never attempt a personal attack on her. It was awful the treatment she received.
I wish she would have kept the clothes though..
You can’t give a girl a dress… and take it back.
I like her. I didn’t like her work, but we could have done a lot worse.
Wasn't one thing right about that, 'shooze - giving her
pttx333 (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 5:02PM EST (link)clothes back! Good grief, the way she was hammered about it you would have thought she carried a mattress on her back to get them! I never heard anything so petty, stupid and downright NUTZ!
I really enjoy reading your personal insight, ‘shooze, and so much appreciate what I learn from you. Thanks bunches!
Huntsman's timing is so suspicious
lizzie Monday, January 16th at 11:36AM EST (link)that Romney must have promised him SecState, or if that already went to Bolton (suddenly attacking Ron Paul), Huntsman gets UN Ambasador (cabinet level post).
except Romney can NOT win. No way. I voted for McCain to protest Obama (in NY, not much more than a protest vote), but I might actually campaign against Romney if the GOP is stupid enough to let him buy their nomination.
Good news is that only five on the debate stages this week.
How many more “Mitt Fits” will we see ?
Only Gingrich and Perry can win.
copied from my comment in Erick’s thread on the Evangelicals:
Romney and, or, worse, plus Santorum hands re-election to Obama
DNC will be running against “Vulture Capitalism” and on “protecting women’s reproductive rights”.
If Ron Paul gets too much influence, except a lesson on why a currency requires a Central Bank (Ridley Scott started that with Sunday night’s episode of “The Good Wife” on CBS)
The Democrats will destroy the GOP if it is Romney or Santorum, or worse, a joint ticket with Ron Paul’s influence on the platform.
For those who question Gingrich as Churchill – well, Churchill had far more baggage than Gingrich, but, Churchill’s voice changed history at the moment of true crisis.
signing off. bad weather ahead, going to see “War Horse” ahead of the ice storm.
I can only watch Perry and Gingrich on tv. Gingrich was terrific on Piers Morgan last night.
Guess Huntsman could not bear to come in last, but he did NOT have to endorse Romney.
my respect for Bachmann has only increased – for not endorsing anyone.
Bought and paid for, lizzie.

I’m sure there’s some football move or some political term for what happened.
The way I see it: All these candidates were encouraged/bribed to enter the race in order to split the conservataive vote (away from Perry and possibly Newt).
Once they’ve won their crowd (and expenses paid by Romney), they back out and throw their support to Romney, effectively giving him the nomination w/o having to lift hardly a finger, thus appearing to be the “white savior” with arms outstretched to the masses.
I can’t stand to see his smarmy smile and have to turn it off. Same with Santorum……whineybutt IMHO.
Rick Perry STILL! doesn’t have or need blood. He is filled with magma.

I give it even odds that Huntsman was manipulated
jakeofalltrades (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 11:49AM EST (link)and was innocent of any collusion – assuming there even was collusion, which I don’t know.
jake, I'm not a football person........maybe some is.....
avagreen Monday, January 16th at 11:56AM EST (link)but, the term I’m thinking is a “runaround pass” or something like that.

Guess I was thinking of soccor?
avagreen Monday, January 16th at 12:00PM EST (link)Pelé’s move is a variant of the “selling the dummy” feint – letting the ball go around a defender then also circling the opponent, rather than following the straight path of a pass or loose ball, and can be useful in tight situations.
Or, Blomqvist shuffle?
Receiving an excellent through pass, the Swede confused the approaching keeper – letting the ball run – and faking left, while sprinting right, around his opponent. He collected the ball on the other side and finished with an easy goal.

Perry was Romney's main target from the beginning
circlegranch Monday, January 16th at 12:17PM EST (link)Just as Perry’s record in TX ws greatly feared by Obama, so it was by Team Romney. Whatever the manipulating behind the scenes the past few years, Perry was always a threat. Thus, the establishment in Congress have beat down the newbie tea party members. The tea party was an annoyance and an obstacle for the ruling class of the GOP. With surgical precision, they have lasered and cut and removed the revolt wing of the party till there’s little resemblance of its former state. Of course, our opponents on the other side of the aisle applaud this because the astounding victories of 2010 hurt them, as well.
As for Huntsman and why he immediately ran to the aid of Romney, who knows his thinking on that. Maybe its complicated, maybe it was contrived long ago. Maybe he simply got his own version of the iPad weekend speech and decided it was time to fall in line and start taking orders. Or, perhaps Obama has offered him another ambassadorship.
Perry v Romney/Huntsman/Obama
duramater (Diary) Monday, January 16th at 12:48PM EST (link)Agree circleg with any or all the above speculations and observations.
All along, I have just sensed that Romney is not only the establishment GOP choice, but is the preferred opponent by Obama as well. Huntsman’s jumping to Romney ship therefore doesn’t surprise and actually gives more credence to the determination of both parties to ram another undesirable down our throats in the general election.
Romney v Obama is 6 of one and half dozen of the other. Aside from mega dollars, neither could withstand an honest, objective comparison to Rick Perry’s real time, long time record of leadership and they know it.
Even to the non-political junkies and nonchalant undecideds out there, a non-Romney is still preferable and the least offensive, non-mudslining candidate will likely be the last man standing who can whip Romney, then Obama. Right now, that may boil down to Perry and Santorum.
Where Santorum fails is this. Disregard his anti gay, anti abortion rhetoric (which drives off the libs), and he is not much different than Nancy Pelosi in spending philosophy. Tht will eventually register with voters in FL and beyond.
Perry = last man standing, deserving full support of GOP and conservative voters.
