Dear Governor Palin

About that Senate seat

I really don’t want to jump in before the appeals process is exhausted, because everyone, no matter how much I despise them, has the right to be presumed innocent, but I feel this is essential. It would be irresponsible if you were not already considering the matter, so now is the time to influence your thinking. In any case, Senator Stevens has been convicted so, appeals process or not, we currently have to consider him guilty.

This is not the right job for you, Governor. If you are to preserve your viability for a future White House run – and you should – there are two factors you need to consider.

First, the talk about you being inexperienced was not all nonsense. It was a bit rich coming from a ticket with not one day’s executive experience between them, but you are still in the early stages of your career. You should complete your term as governor, at least. And re-election – which I am guessing would be by a big margin – would look good too.

Second, the outsider always wins. 2008 did nothing to upset that. The only job in Washington from which anyone has an even chance of being elected President is, well, President. Apart from 1988, every open election since 1920 has gone to the outsider. Quite a few of the elections with a serving president on the ballot have too. Post-1920, only two serving Senators have been elected President: one defeated the VPOTUS and the other a longer serving Senator.

So, find another candidate. No doubt Sean Parnell would serve with distinction. But this is not the right job for you.

Senate is not a good place

ridewind (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 10:14AM EST (link)

Just look at H. Clinton.

Governing a state well will be much more fruitful and effective. Senate is just not a place to talk and communiate to the common people.

Except that...

…thanks to either mishandling by the McCain campaign, or by the nature of her job as governor, Palin is seen by many as inexperienced.

I don’t think people’s perceptions of her will change while she is Governor of Alaska. She needs to do something to raise her national profile and shake off the negative image she got from McCain’s campaign.

I do agree she should not seek Ted Steven’s seat. If anything, she should take down the other Murkowski.

If Sen. Stevens is expelled...

it would be of historic purportions and the MSM would use it paper over any transition miscues by our President-elect.

Governor Palin would be back on the national stage regarding her decision on whom to replace Sen. Stevens with. After a full review of potential replacements (see how IL Gov. is handling it now), I concur with qlangley that Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell would make the most sense. It would give her an opportunity to call on another to takeover as her Lt. Gov. too.

As other comments have alluded to, Gov. Palin’s best path is to simply continue doing well by Alaska, seeking out higher leadership within the National Governors Association, speak continually on energy independence issues (*becoming the go to person the MSM seeks out from the right to discuss), and as Hillary did, become a prolific fundraiser for the GOP.

She already is on-tap to travel to Georgia to campaign for Sen. Saxby Chambliss (as is Sen. McCain). I guarantee that she will draw the biggest crowd ever and will be tagged as responsible for helping keep this Senate seat red.

Lastly, she should run for re-election, period. That’s one of my biggest bugaboos about Mitt Romney. He didn’t allow himself to be challenged on his record in Massachussettes; he sort of got in and got out before news turned bad.

Palin needs to be in the Senate.

Tbone (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 10:23PM EST (link)

It will give her a great platform from which to lead the Right. It will give her the opportunity to castrate the RINOs. It will give her “inside the Beltway” exposure to the scum that inhabits the political landscape in both Parties so she can know the players. It will allow her to be on the Sunday shows and cable news weekly. It will make the people who doubt her and criticize her beserk. I like that.

I don't think so.

Her best asset is being on the OUTSIDE of Washington politics.

And her appointing herself to the position doesn’t pass the smell test.

Her running for Senator means that she will be one of a hundred, an extreme let down.

She is a leader. She needs to lead.

Call me what you want, just don’t call me late for dinner.

She doesn't appoint

Alaska law requires a special election within 90 days. This is the best case for her running, as she would easily win.

Well, she is

qlangley (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 4:26AM EST (link)

With only two years as governor she is fairly inexperienced, cutting off her executive experience for a talking shop like the Senate wouldn’t help.

Don’t worry about her national profile. She is going to be the GOP’s biggest fundraiser over the next two years.

In fact, if Palin and Romney both wish to be seen as viable candidates in future national elections, let’s see them competing to see who can raise the most money for the mid-terms.

Actually, you should modify your statement to

“The Medias opinion will not change”. To most Conservatives she is just fine…thank you. Her attitude toward solving problems, her common sense, and basic intelligence is what is appealing and is also what would make her a great executive.

In Alaska Governor Palin has done so much already, she cut taxes, cut spending, balanced the budget, ran a huge surplus, gave 1200 dollars back to every Alaska taxpayer, and made historic progress on that pipeline. What more could she possibly accomplish? Of course she could do MORE of all that, and that would be great for the people of Alaska, but in terms of National politics she’s already proven herself at the State level, she’s been the best Governor in America hands down, theres nothing left for her to prove. She should use the opportunity of Ted Stevens inevitable resignation or expulsion to do what she does best, replace corrupt Republicans, with herself. She can come to the Senate, work with folks like John McCain and others on the one area where she hasnt had the chance yet to prove her mastery, foreign affairs. As America’s Markgaret Thatcher she can establish her foreign policy bona fides by working with the elder statesmen like McCain and Lugar, while also leading more in a direction of ‘declare victory and come home’ in Iraq and focus our attention where it belongs, on killing bin ladin and the rest of his terrorists, which means focusing much more on Afghanistan.

Another nice benefit would be the fact that Sarah would be the ONLY Pro-Life woman in the US Senate next year. We need her to help fight the radical pro-abortionists if they try to repeal the limited gains we have made over the years, which no doubt they will try to do. Send Sarah to Washington!

It is worse than that

The business is in recruitment. Fortunately, academic jobs being what they are, I have not had to quit my main job in order to do this. In fact, my employer encourages links with industry.

Yes to the Senate

SteveLA (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 11:13AM EST (link)

I would like Palin to go for the Uncle Ted seat if and when they throw Te’s sorry a** out of there.

Being in the Senate will give Governor Palin to show what sort of legislator, what sort of leader she really is. It would also give her exposure on the national stage with some of the big issues that she has not faced in Alaska.

By 2012 Governor Palin could be a 2 Year Governor, a 3 Year Senator and have proven her leadership skills once and for all.

to Ga and help save the Senate seat there. McCain is going but isn’t going to be any help. He should go back to AZ and stay.

Palin can say Saxbe is the only “Hope” that we will not hand American Jobs to illegal immigrants. The only “Hope” to stop them from eliminating the private ballot and allow union thugs to coerce you into joining a union…

There is a list of things she can say that McCain can’t because he is on the wrong side of the issue. She also, unlike McCain will draw a crowd.

I agree.

itrytobenice (Diary) Sunday, November 9th at 12:08PM EST (link)

She needs to stay out of that death spiral that is the Senate. It’s a place for beltway insiders and crooked politicians to scratch each other’s backs.

Don’t forget, guys, Fred Thompson quit the Senate because it drove him nuts.

She would be a minority in a minority caucus. We need revolutionaries in the Senate, but I’m not willing to risk our #1 in that cesspool.
