KS: Moore to Retire ( GOP Pickup Opportunity)

via CQPolitics

Rep. Dennis Moore (D-Kan.) is reportedly going to announce today that he won’t seek re-election, making him the first Member of Congress this cycle to announce an outright retirement from the House.

The six-term Democrat’s departure, which was reported first by the Kansas City Star Monday morning, will leave his Republican-leaning district up for grabs in 2010. Moore’s 3rd district seat will no doubt be a top pick up opportunity for Republicans, who have already indicated they plan to target the seat. Several candidates have already expressed interest, including the 2008 GOP nomineeNick Jordan.

President Barack Obama narrowly won the 3rd district in the 2008 presidential race.

Potential or already declared candidates:

Jeff Colyer (R) – State Sen.
Daniel Gilyeat (R) – Iraq War Veteran

Terry Goodman (R) – Overland Park City Councilman
Darla Jaye (R) – Radio Talk Show Host
Nick Jordan (R) – Ex-State Sen. & ’08 Nominee

Patricia Lightner (R) – Ex-State Rep. & ’04 Candidate
John Rysavy (R) – Businessman & National Guard Veteran

Kevin Yoder (R) – State Rep. & Attorney

Kansas is going red in 2010

If Moore's Retiring, His Internal Polling Must Have Been *Atrocious*

They must have known he was going to lose.

And this may very well be the first of many Dem Congressman who, facing the real (and even likely) prospect of being in the Minority next year, will decide to throw in the towel and retire rather than run again. (For example, I don’t think someone like John Dingell will want to stick around if he’s going to be in the Minority again.)

This is very similar to what ended up happening to the Dems in 1994…

Handwriting on all

I think he also knew the Republicans will make that seat more Republican friendly once Brownback becomes Gov

I be more curious to see if people like Skelton in MO keep on running or retire

He's taking the easy way out

Better to announce he’s retiring and make it appear it was his decision, than face the humiliation of being soundly kicked out on his arse by an angry electorate.

Let’s hope that others follow Moore through the exit.
