Multiple GOP sources are saying that Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) will be running for U.S. Senate in Delaware and will make his announcement this afternoon.
In addition, Attorney General Beau Biden is expected to soon announce he’ll seek the Democratic nomination for his father’s old seat.
Politico: “His decision is poised to set up a marquee matchup between two of the biggest names in Delaware politics. The moderate congressman and former Delaware governor has never lost a political race since elected to the Delaware state House in 1966.”
The announcement leaves his House seat open and already Fmr Lt Gov Carney is running. The Republicans will now have to find a candidate for this race and it will be difficult to hold.
A good recruitment day for NRSC; no doubt Castle was the only one who had shot of winning this race and a recent Rassmussen poll indicated he is leading Biden 47% to 42%.

Right Reason (Diary) Tuesday, October 6th at 11:36AM EST (link)Castle is one of the worst RINO’s in the House. Better than letting the seat go Dem, but just barely.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

Castle Is Worth Supporting
crosley (Diary) Tuesday, October 6th at 1:11PM EST (link)I look at the Republican coalition like a sports team. You’re not going to be able to recruit only All-Starts, sometimes you have to take less than perfect recruits in order to win.
Not every “team member” is going to be the conservative ideal, but Republicans need to get their numbers up in the Senate.
Everyone has a different take on what constitutes a RINO, some people think Giuliani is a RINO, but Huckabee is a true conservative. Personally, I have the exact opposite take.
The most pressing issues right now, reckless government spending, universal health care, cap and trade, card check, tax increases, the War in Afghanistan, etc. are issues that Castle will most likely be on the side of conservatives.
Um
scarlos (Diary) Tuesday, October 6th at 2:22PM EST (link)You do realize he was one of the 8 Republicans who voted for “Cap and Trade”, right?

Um
redtillimdead (Diary) Tuesday, October 6th at 2:39PM EST (link)You do realize that was probably something that his district favored, right? People represent their district, not political party. Joseph Cao and Mike Castle are great examples of people who put behind their party and vote in their districts interest.

I was just pointing out that he’s not likely to be a strong voice in opposition to a bill he just voted for

There's a flaw in that logic
SirGladiator (Diary) Tuesday, October 6th at 7:19PM EST (link)If its OK to vote liberal because your district is liberal, well….guess what Delaware as a whole is? I guess if he wins the Senate seat it’ll still be OK to vote liberal since, after all, if he becomes a Senator he’s going to be representing the EXACT same people, because his seat is an ‘At Large’ seat, meaning it covers the whole state. I don’t really agree with the premise anyway, I believe in voting on principle, not expediency. Of course I don’t disagree thats how things are done these days in Washington, but I see that as part of the problem. We need leaders who stand for Conservative values, not Washington values. I imagine that on election night next year I’ll be happy to see one of ‘our guys’ winning the Delaware Senate seat, but in reality he’s only ‘our guy’ because he has an R next to his name, he isn’t anything like the kind of guy we should actually want in the US Senate. I would hope that he would get as little time/effort as possible from true Conservatives and Republicans, we should be using our time and resources to help Conservatives win. Castle vs Biden is a fight we lose no matter which guy wins, so I’d rather fight elsewhere, where there’s a chance for a much more meaningful victory.
