Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle has told associates he will announce this week that he won’t seek a third term in 2010, POLITICO has learned.
By deciding against a run, Doyle, a Democrat, sets off what could be one of the most competitive gubernatorial races in the country next year.
GOP field includes Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and former Rep. Mark Neumann.
With Doyle retiring, a slew of Wisconsin Democrats are likely to consider the race. That list is topped by Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton, who has already indicated she would run if Doyle does not and who would be the state’s first female governor.
By next year, though, Lawton may be running as an incumbent.
For months, buzz has circulated in Wisconsin and national political circles that Doyle is in line for an Obama administration post. The governor got behind the president early in the Democratic race, well before the Wisconsin primary in which Obama thumped Hillary Clinton.

Chandra Miller Fienen this afternoon resigned her position as Gov. Jim Doyle’s legal counsel following reports that she is not licensed to practice law in Wisconsin.
Her resignation came shortly after the Republican Party of Wisconsin filed a complaint with the Office of Layer Regulation, charging she violated the state’s Rules of Professional Conduct for Attorneys by representing herself as Doyle’s chief legal counsel on official legal documents and governmental boards.
Republican Party of Wisconsin executive director Mark Jefferson called news that she wasn’t licensed to practice law in Wisconsin “astonishing.”
“The fact that the Governor’s Chief Legal Counsel is not even licensed to practice law in Wisconsin is astonishing, and as an attorney himself, Doyle should know better,” Jefferson said. “It’s a stunning example of the arrogance and recklessness of this Governor. Perhaps this is why this administration has such a difficult time following the law.”

Another politician only interested in his political agenda and power base, the taxpayer in Wisconsin is marginalized and taxed-to- death. In Wisconsin the taxpayer owes government till August 12th, 2009, 26 more days than 2008 due to Doyle and the liberals in Madison tax increases and greed for power.
