The virus responsible for the Spanish flu in 1918 created a ‘viral legacy’ that continues to this day, according to a study published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine.

According to the authors of the report, the Spanish flu’s H1N1 virus, which caused tens of millions of deaths in 1918, was also transmitted from humans to pigs during the pandemic. Tracing the lineage of the virus in this research shows that it continues to evolve in both humans and pigs 90 years later.

All human-adapted influenza A viruses “are descendants, direct or indirect, of that founding virus” says Jeffrey Taubenberger, a co-author of the report and a senior investigator at the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the US.

• All flu viruses contain eight genes in total, including two that contain instructions for producing the proteins hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which allow the virus to attach to a host cell and spread from cell-to-cell.
• There are 16 sub-types of the H protein and nine sub-types of the N protein a flu virus can possess. This offers 144 possible HN combinations, but to date, only three (H1N1, H2N2 and H3N2) have been observed to be fully adapted for infecting humans.

In his study, Perez used the avian H9N2 influenza virus, one that is on the list of candidates for human pandemic potential. Using reverse genetics, a technique whereby individual genes from viruses are separated, selected, and put back together, Perez and his team created a hybrid human-avian virus. Their research hybrid has internal human flu genes and surface avian flu genes from the H9N2 virus. Though it comes from a different strain of avian flu than the one that contributed to the hybrid virus now causing the swine flu outbreak, Perez’s research virus is similar in origin to the swine flu virus, in that both involved a combination of avian and human influenza viruses.

The specific origin of the new flu strain remains a matter of intense investigation. Even the presumption of a Pig Zero is just educated guesswork.

The new virus conceivably could have spliced itself together inside a human being or some kind of bird.

This man-made disaster story has its roots in the mythology surrounding AIDS and it being a creation of the US government, etc.

Vaccines can have side effects. It is up to your prudential judgment whether you are willing to risk the vaccine rather than the disease. GBS is extremely rare. Flu isn’t. If you are immune compromised or a member of a group that is particularly vulnerable to flu common sense says the risk of flu is much higher than that of GBS.

There are a lot of reasons for the hype on H1N1 2009 but making a case for Obamacare isn’t one of them.
