As the media continues to salivate over Ted Cruz’s Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke, who has recently closed the gap between the two in Texas, new details came to light about his 1998 Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) arrest. O’Rourke has spoken candidly about his run-ins with the law, which also include trespassing onto the University of Texas – El Paso by jumping a fence late at night with friends.

However, the Houston Chronicle obtained the police incident report from O’Rourke’s night of an alcohol-infused car wreck in which he hit another vehicle. The 26-year-old O’Rourke — who would end up blowing a 0.134 and a 0.136 into police breathalyzers that night — then tried to flee the scene.

According to the report, another motorist had to prevent O’Rourke from leaving the scene.

State and local police reports obtained by the Chronicle and Express-News show that O’Rourke was driving drunk at what a witness called “a high rate of speed” in a 75 mph zone on Interstate 10 about a mile from the New Mexico border. He lost control and hit a truck, sending his car careening across the center median into oncoming lanes. The witness, who stopped at the scene, later told police that O’Rourke had tried to drive away from the scene.

While getting behind the wheel after drinking beyond what is legal is bad enough, trying to leave the scene after causing an accident whether drunk or sober shows deep flaws in one’s character.

I’m sure the fawning spreads in places like Town & Country magazine or Vanity Fair which has already breathlessly wished Beto to run for president in 2020 — will have updated summaries of this incident. One can be sure if Ted Cruz had done the same, they’d be all over this. But then again, maybe they’d be too afraid of confronting the Zodiac Killer.
