Welcome to America. Where Not Attending an Inauguration is an Acceptable Option

A lot of fare has been made over who is attending and performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration this Friday, or more who will not be. The latest being that so far 18 House Democrats have announced that they won’t be attending for various reasons, some in clear protest of Trump himself.

California Rep. Barbara Lee said she wouldn’t endorse a president defined by “racism, sexism, xenophobia and bigotry.” And civil rights era icon and veteran Democratic Rep. John Lewis (Ga.) blasted Trump in an interview set to air on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, saying the president-elect is not “legitimate” and he’ll be skipping the inauguration for the first time since he arrived in Congress in 1987.

In addition to Lee and Lewis, Democratic Reps. John Conyers of Michigan, Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, Raúl Grijalva of Arizona, Luis Gutiérrez of Illinois, José Serrano, Nydia Velazquez, Adriano Espaillat and Jerrold Nadler of New York, Earl Blumenauer and Kurt Schrader of Oregon, Lacy Clay of Missouri, and Mark Takano, Mark DeSaulnier, Jared Huffman, Ted Lieu and Judy Chu of California have all said they’ll skip the ceremony because they can’t stomach Trump.

Here’s the thing, who cares? We should all be just fine with this. I won’t be watching the inauguration either, as I’m sure millions of Americans won’t. This is America, not North Korea. No one, no matter their occupation, is required to sit through pomp and circumstance for Dear Leader.

For once I actually agree with Rep. Maxine Waters (D – CA) sentiment, “It’s not interesting, it’s just not interesting.”

The great thing about our country is that our republic does not hinge on one man or woman being president and another not. Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2008 was the most highly attended and watched in history. Does Donald Trump’s inauguration being less so make him less president or diminish his power as such in any way? Of course not. But the left and the media would have you believe that that’s the case.

What is actually a threat to our system is evidenced by those on the left who attack and demean anyone who would perform or attend the inauguration, or who merely intimates that Donald Trump will be president and we should accept it and move on.

It’s so unsurprising that the left still hasn’t figured out that their economic condescension combined with the conform-to-our-ideology-or-we’ll-trash-your-reputation-and-livlihood mentality is how a guy like Donald Trump ended up winning the White House in the first place.
