Lockerbie, Scotland

Just sent this note to the Scottish government………..

As an American citizen I am completely outraged by your government’s decision to release a convicted terrorist on compassionate grounds after only 8 years of incarceration.  When divided by the over 250 lives which were lost that comes to about 31.25 lives per year of incarceration or 2.6 lives per month.  As a retired law enforcement officer and hazardous devices technician your actions are appalling.  As an officer who participated in homicide investigations for over 15 years including the crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer, your leniency is unparalleled.  Have you forgotten the pain of the victims themselves or their families?  Have you forgotten that many were American citizens?  Have you forgotten a country which helped to prevent your annihilation a mere 65 years ago?  It is obvious that you have and it is painfully obvious you don’t really care.  How thrilling it was to watch a convicted mass murderer receive a hero’s welcome in his native country.  I understand his native country may have close energy ties to you.  Is this true?  You may not care about someone like me or what I think, but I will promise you I will never forget your decision to release a man on compassionate grounds when it is obvious he had no compassion for others about 20 years ago.  I, prior to today had always admired Great Britain and Scotland and unfortunately this single action has greatly altered my opinion.  Do not expect me for a visit for you have betrayed justice.  Do not expect me to support you should you be threatened again and congratulations on your strengthened ties to Tripoli.  I would be very surprised by any response you might care to offer.

And as an American don't we have enough to worry about?

bk (Diary) Sunday, August 23rd at 8:38AM EST (link)

Clinton freed all sorts of terrorists and made it harder to catch others.

Bush tried to stop/catch terrorists and was called the worst person int he world for his troubles.

Obama is going to make it impossible to catch more terrorists and impossible to hold any that we do catch. He traded Revolutionary Guards and other troops to Iran in exchange for a journalist held hostage.

We’re doing everything backwards – Holder frees Black Panthers who committed crimes that could have led to violence, we coddle up to North Korea and China and Iran, we start freeing prisoners from Gitmo, we declare there is no such thing as a war on terror, and then Holder opens up unlimited resources to trying to put anyone who helped our side during the Bush years in jail.

I don’t think we’re in much position to cast any stones.

And all the above in 7 months! nt

A couple of things

The comments about preventing Scotland’s annihilation are gratuitous and not likely to be helpful to the campaign. Lend lease was appreciated, but do recall that the US didn’t actually send any troops until long after Hitler had abandoned his plans for invasion. Furthermore, your ambassador to London had been conspiring with the Nazis during the 1930s, assuring them that America would not intervene if Hitler invaded France an Britain. Granted, your President sacked him for this.

You should probably note that Scotland’s leading newspaper has an online poll with only a few hundred votes cast on whether or not releasing Meghari was a good move.

You were making a decent comment until you finished with that girly toss.

although he doesn’t need “me” to defend him – his point wasn’t the results of the poll, rather the few number of votes. Internet polls, especially those posted in relatively high traffic places, attract large numbers. After I voted there had only been 632 votes (split 50/50).

Actually . . .

I mostly meant that a few RedStaters could influence the result.

Right now, the voting is 51% in favor of what Scotland did, and 49% against. The question I found interesting was the one that asked if this action would influence Arabs to think better of Scotland. The poll so far was that it definitely would. In what world would Islam think better of Scotland unless Scotland accepted Islam and its tenets in place of Scottish law?

Hello again Mr. Langley, How is our Lockerbie bomber feeling today? I’m sure the change of scenery to Libya has done wonders for him thanks to Scotland, United Kingdom, or whatever-whichever government released him.

Gratuitous?

As are many Americans, my family’s ancestors for the most part migrated from Eastern Europe. After the Great War the victors, including Great Britain and maybe the U.S. who helped in that victory partitioned the Austro-Hungarian Empire whether the residents liked it or not. I don’t bemoan history but this much I know. In the late 30′s Britain’s Prime Minister sought “Peace in our Time” and I don’t believe it was achieved. I don’t believe your government’s and your arrogance will achieve anything with the people of Islam. You are and will always be an Infidel just as I am to them. The paucity of participants in your Scottish Polls is both regrettable and unfortunate. It is a “great sleep” which is repetitive of your past.

Yes, gratuitous

qlangley (Diary) Friday, August 28th at 1:00PM EST (link)

My point was that you don’t help a case about the Lockerbie bomber by coming over all arrogant “we saved your ass” in WW!!, especially when the case is highly debateable.

Yes, the allied powers did partition the Hapsburg Empire. The case for that was pretty strong. The prime movers were David Lloyd-George and Woodrow Wilson. There is a case that says that the map of Europe between 1919 and 1938 was the one that most closely matched states and nations. Not sure of the connection between this and Lockerbie, or the helpfulness of raising WWII in an argument about Lockerbie.

Yes, Neville Chamberlain pursued an “appease and rearm” strategy. Britain wanted to avoid war, and did so until September 1939. America wanted the same and did so until December 1941. Again, I don’t really see the relevance to my point about the lack of tact in the OP.

I am not sure what ‘arrogance’ you are referrring to, either on my part or on my government’s. Not even sure what government you think is mine, as the principal offender here was the government of Scotland, a country in which I have never lived or voted.
