but I know 'Sixties Lefties pretty well and I know organized labor really, really well. You have a strange symbiosis between the two now. As old time trades and crafts work and unions faded away in the private sector, they became stronger and much more militantly leftest in the Third Sector, industries that rely on government funding or are heavily regulated. Then you have the rise of public employee unionism since the late 'Sixties to become the dominant force in organized labor. If you're wondering what happened to all those SDS types from the 'Sixties, look no further than the leadership and, especially, the operatives of the big "industrial" unions like UAW and the Machinists and the big pure public employee unions like AFSCME and SEIU (SEIU is more of a third sector union because of its emphasis on health care workers).

If you want to see teary eyes and hear shaky voices, get some trade unionist types with a few drinks in them talking about what a horror the 1948 Republican Congress and the Taft-Hartley Amendment to the National Labor Relations Act are. They've been plotting their revenge since 1948! The aging SDSers have been plotting the takeover of the government since they first cooked it up smoking dope in a college dorm room in 1968. These people are not going to waste a good crisis! They have a pretty good playbook going. Pour a bunch of cash into their interest groups. Let the economy fester some more and talk it down so that everyone beleives that everything is totally broken. Get a little civic unrest going because "not enough is being done." Blame the fact that not enough is being done on Conservatives generally and talk radio specifically. Pass card check. (Card check is the only solution for the UAW mess. They have to get the transplant costs up to the legacy cost level and there's only one way to do that; put them on the UAW contract. If they have the votes to pass card check, they have the votes to repeal right to work, and they will - they have to to save UAW.) Muzzle conservative talk radio, which they can do with measures short of re-instituting the Fairness Doctrine. Then, you look around in a couple or three years and you have a huge Democratic-Labor Party financed by compelled dues and a Country in which well over half of the res publica is on the dole in some fashion. Welcome to the United Socialist States of America.

Even in his campaign style, he was the opposite. It was all about country and what needed to be done to restore it closer to its "roots." And I still think that's what scared so many of the pols in the his own party--Fred preached a doctrine that included self-sufficiency, personal responsibility and sacrifice. The notion that government was killing all of us with all the entitlements and therefore they had to be greatly reduced or eliminated.

That was just intolerable to most of them. Fred Forever. I'd vote for him for anything, anytime, anywhere. I can't wait to hear him on the radio. Although somehow I have a vision of a lot of us listening to him on cobbled together shortwave radios in the dark in the basement like Poland under Russian domination listening to Radio Free Europe.

but Fred makes sense. Conservatism justs pours out of him like rain from a gutter. We need him and others to more public with their ideas and get the fire going in the Senate. The House is on fire .
I'll always be a Fredhead.

and I suspect the chances are small, but what do people think about a Fred run in 12...will he be too old, will he be too yesterday. I think people will be famished for real conservative values and if he packages himself correctly over the next few years (by continuing to stay in the public eye via announcements like this) then maybe he has a chance to garner the nomination.

Yes I know...too early to think about 2012...but after the first three weeks of this administration how can one not think ahead.

I like what he has to say but too bad his campaign was "I'm too tired for the campaign"

Oh how I am missing Romney as President right about now. How the heck did we not nominate him over McCain?

but Republicans in the early primary states didn't do their homework. If he had made it to the General Election, I think he would have won because he would have cut through the media - he would not have been afraid to confront Obama - he would have run on true conservative principles (opposing the bailout and offering a stimulus package alternative based on tax relief and defense spending) - and he would have distanced himself from Bush by criticizing actions he took in office that were moderate/liberal (like the TARP).

Alas, we must now learn the hard way what happens when America gives the foxes unfettered access to the hen house.

A...We're just going to have to rename you "Gloomy Gus".

Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Heck no!

or slightly modified Baghdad Bob speak

"Faltering forces of infidel Democrats cannot just win an election and lay besiege to them! They are the ones who will find themselves under siege. Therefore, in reality whatever this miserable Reed/Palosi has been saying, he was talking about his own forces. Now even the Democratic command is under siege."

This is what it feels like after you've lost the pivotal battle and are sitting back in camp licking your wounds. Your losses are irreplaceable in any reasonable time frame and the only thing you have to look forward to is digging in and fighting defensive battles, giving ground for time, causing as many casualties as you can and hoping you and yours aren't among them.

And though it is a military analogy and they have their limits in politics; we lost a pivotal battle. We really didn't see what the enemy had done to change its methods of fighting and we only half-ass prepared even for fighting the last war. They rolled over the hill with armor and machine guns and we had muzzleloaders.

Welcome to the guerilla.
