A Woman’s Life, A Year’s Journey, A Birthday Today

This diary is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend and Conservative mentor, known on RS as TallChE.  He passed away Thanksgiving Eve. from injuries sustained in a terrible accident at the end of October.

This is going to be a two-in-one diary. As it is my real birthday, I thought I would first share a little bit about myself – a woman’s life.  The second part is not about conversion, but recognition.

I had a less-than-ideal childhood.  I am a product of nine foster homes, and 10 schools through high school.  I won’t dwell on those years, and neither do I make light of the impact such a growing up story has.  We all know there are holes and scars, and one can spend a lifetime working on smoothing them out; in fact, one does.  But everyone has had different experiences and personal stories, and I always try to keep this in mind.

Three things stand out as being mainstays for me.  I loved books, they were a refuge, and school was a safe haven. Good teachers recognize a young person’s thirst for knowledge.  Two, in a very dark time for me as a child, I once cried out, “I wish I was someone’s child, and a person nearby said, “You are, you are God’s child.”  Somehow, those words stayed with me and sustain me to this day.  The third thing – I always had a hopeful heart that tomorrow would be better.

Eventually, I grew up, was able to get a higher education and became a Navy Nurse.  I met and married my husband, a great guy, and we have three wonderful children.  No perfect answer on how to have a successful marriage.  But, I do think it has to do with where one starts and where one expects to go.  Two people who marry can have differences, but as long as you have the same values and similar expectations, it helps.

Over the years, while we were raising the children, we noticed an erosion of our traditional American culture.  The War on Christmas, political correctness, schools tolerating behaviors that were not part of the America we grew up in.  One day, we looked at one another and said, “When did our way of life become the exception, rather than the rule?”  Everywhere one looks is the intrusion of the State, from how to raise your children, to what they learn in public schools.  Our children attended parochial school through middle school, then public high school.  It has been in this decade that we’ve finally realized just how marginalized our traditional American way of life has become.

Now the journey of the past year.  As I noted, this is not a conversion story of a Democrat to a Republican, but more of a recognition that not only am I a Republican, but I am a Conservative. There is a difference. Just a short year ago, we were still in shock, still absorbing the election results and the full impact was then unknown. Many of us felt true fear. Even my husband, who is a calm, steady man in the roughest of seas, seemed shaken. Every time I met a friend, we’d tear up and, for the first time in my life, I was afraid for my country.  The first thing I did that dark day was cancel our local newspaper.  For over a decade we had seen it pushing an ideological/cultural agenda with which we had nothing in common.  I realized I didn’t have to pay for this abuse.  We had only watched FOX News for a long time, but the two weeks before and for a long time after, I did not have TV on.   We found we could get the WSJ delivered and the weekly edition of the Washington Times by mail.  We like a newspaper with our coffee.

Let me digress for a moment and talk about TallChE. He was a chemical engineer and literally a big guy, 6’8”.  He was like a big brother to me.  As a conservative and activist, he had incredible insight and wisdom.  Though his schedule rarely gave him time to post on RS, he followed the site closely.  Behind the scenes, he was doing all of the things that grassroots political activism calls us to do. In October, he worked in the local Bob McDonnell headquarters, calling and helping other volunteers to do the same. As mentioned above, TallChE suffered a terrible accident that last weekend, and died of his injuries just before Thanksgiving.  The loss of TallChE does leave a hole, but he had incredible Christian faith, and he was truly “a good and faithful servant.” I pray that God will enfold my gentle giant friend in His arms.

TallChE introduced me to RedState.  By mid-2008, I finally succumbed to the Internet.  Having always been such a bibliophile, I was a computer hold-out.  It was on RS that I discovered others just like myself, traditional, independent, freedom loving Americans.   Somehow we had been forced under the radar for the past several decades, but now we were showing up.  Between RS and other sites, I learned not only about the Conservative movement, but about being a Conservative.  No longer was I just a Republican, giving robotically to the GOP, now I could specifically direct energy, resources and support within the grassroots movement.  As Conservatives we recognize our differences, but we have more in common than not.  One of the most important things I discovered, we are here because we came seeking answers.  As patriots, we do not like feeling helpless or powerless.  Being involved in the grassroots movement of Conservatism allowed us to move from the fear of what was going to happen, to the hope birthed by action with like-minded patriots who love this great country, America.

Has it been a hard year?  Yes, for all of us.  Recently,  TMR, RS, and the greater Conservative movement lost David Hinz, a wonderful and dynamic activist.  I lost my dear friend and mentor, TallChE.  We’ve suffered political disappointment, angst over each hurdle before us due to the fact we lost that election in 2008.  But one year later, it is not quite the doom and gloom we had feared would be our portion.  Tea Parties, Town Halls, the 9/12 March, have all been manifestations of doing something about the circumstances we find ourselves in.  Politics brings us together here at RedState; as a community we are learning how to travel this road, and we are traveling it together.

December is a month of celebration, and I have always appreciated the fact that I had a birthday in the month. Different faiths celebrate Holy Days this month, so my thoughts are certainly to encompass everyone.  Even if one does not follow a particular faith, the season brings a sharing and connectedness with our fellow man.  And my birthday wish today?  Please remember the extraordinary work our moderators Neil and Moe and RedState do for us.

When my family asks me what do I want for my birthday, they know what I am thinking. I am not cold, hungry or wondering where I will be the next night, and I have friends near and far; I have what I need and the rest is gravy. I still have my simple faith in God, and belief that tomorrow will be better.  We can, and will,  work to make it so.

A beautifully written diary, my friend. Happy birthday!

And I thank you for sharing the gift of you with us. You are an amazing woman.

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it. — Margaret Thatcher

Happy Birthday dearest penquin....

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Tuesday, December 8th at 7:56AM EST (link)

I certainly have enjoyed your steadfast resolve to THROW yourself into Conservative Politics and the realization that WE are 40% of this population and being SILENT gets us SILENCE :)

I so loved walking the 9-12 March on Washington with you and your Guy and look forward to an out and out bitter street to street BRAWL for the taking of the House in 2010 and when I personally think of whom I would want standing with me in battle it would definitely include a little penquin whose ice is NOT melting :)

I think you and I have a lot more in common with regards to our childhood then I realized and we will have to chat about that sometime. It is no doubt the experiences of our backgrounds that make us the people WE are today. I don’t whine about my past because I did plenty of that as a LIBERAL and upon reflection of my Conservatism it does NOT make one a victim it makes one a survivor and a soldier in the battlefield of life :)

Thank you, Jaded. No global warming here.

penguin2 (Diary) Tuesday, December 8th at 8:36AM EST (link)

In fact, my igloo is made more solid with each passing day. You are right about being a survivor and though, battle weary at times, it would never occur to us to give up. That’s what the Left does not understand about the true American spirit, we won’t just give in quietly; they are distressed to see how much noise we can make, and they haven’t been able to pull it off, yet.

2010 should be a real eye opener to them. I am realizing more and more there may be significant changes in the incumbents of both parties, if our GOP doesn’t hold the line. Yes, we are getting ready for battle.

I’m sooo glad that you are here posting at RS. You are such a great asset to this site. :-)

It sounds like you, Jaded and me all had similar child hoods (my dad was an alcoholic). Well, you know what “they” say–”what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”–and we definitely have some strong women (and men) around these parts.

I will be praying for the families of David Hinz and TallChE. Thanks for writing this excellent diary, and have a Happy Birthday!

you stronger.” I think about that a lot, and especially in reference to how we are going to get through this administration and restore our country. No easy task, but it helps to be with others who understand and feel as strongly as we do.

Thank you for the thoughts and prayers, it has been a difficult time, and the loss of TallChE made me even more sensitive to the loss for the community, of David Hinz. Yet, I know they both would expect us to carry on, and we will.

Thank you so much for your kind words and reco.

You have written such a beautiful diary, so full of who you really are, which is a woman in full. A mother, a wife, a political activist for conservatism, a good and true citizen of an America that is rapidly disappearing before our outraged eyes. If is people such as you who will stand fast in the face of tyranny–and we will all be right there with you.

It was a very good day when your friend TallChe sent you to us at RedState. I thank him in my prayers for bringing you into my life as such a dear friend. As redneck hippie said the other day, “I think of you as the conscience of RedState….” To which I would also add, “… and the member who always strives with all her might to be fair, kind and generous with her praise.”

Have a most happy birthday, penguin2, and know that you are held dear in many hearts here.

I think back to the first time, TallChE encouraged me to write, and I thought “Oh no, what I have to say can’t fit in with all of the important stuff everyone is saying.” But I have come to discover, we all have helpful voices and that strengthens us in our resolve and activism.

Thank you so much for your wonderful presence on RedState. It was you that I loved to read and laugh over. Like eburke, I have to watch the coffee at the keyboard….

This was a pleasant surprise this morning.

TNJim (Diary) Tuesday, December 8th at 11:56AM EST (link)

First of all, Happy Birthday! May you have many more and God bless you!

Your political story of late is similar to my own. I too have watched this country succumb bit by bit, at times very much under the radar, to political correctness, a minority slowly getting their way which bucks nearly all of our traditional values, almost always putting a pretty mask on their agenda that tries to make us think “Well, what is wrong with that?” We are now seeing very much what’s wrong with that. As religion gets forced out of the schools, even to the point of trying to say students can’t even initiate prayer circles on their own, we have seen rises in delinquency, pregnancies, teen violence. We have seen indoctrination into a political belief, not education. We have even seen attempts to marginalize parents’ influence on their kids, if that influence flies in the face of the agenda the liberal establishment is pushing.

But we can turn that tide. Sites like this one, TMR, and others give us the tools we need to fight back. Tools that include Cold_Warrior’s precinct project, Neil’s warnings of net neutrality being engineered behind the scenes before legislation that will make it the rule even takes place, and of course Erick’s and others’ constant vigilance on the political scene that alerts us to calls to action. Most of us here have a gift of some sort to offer to that effort, even if it is encouragement to those who at times get discouraged. Redneck hippie defined and my neighbor janis clarified what yours is.

As we go into 2010 I look forward to your unique insights into the issues and will enjoy the determination of a mild-mannered penquin who has had e-freakin’-nough, like all of us.

Finally, my condolences to you and the family of TallCHe. May God comfort you and them as we carry his, and David’s, fight forward.

A marvelous diary and highly recommended.

gift to our friend on her birthday today. How about making her an official Tennessean for life as our present? Gives her the right to come see any of us when she’s able to and the authority to be disgusted with Lamar Alexander when appropriate. Got to warn you though, penguin, that’s pretty much a full time gig there. :-)

Now that's a plan, janis.

TNJim (Diary) Tuesday, December 8th at 12:32PM EST (link)

But you don’t really have to be a Tenneseean, official or not, to be disgusted with Alexander, just like you don’t have to be an Arizonan to be disgusted witn McCain, right becker?

LOL, TNJim. "had e-freakin'-nough" is a good description.

penguin2 (Diary) Tuesday, December 8th at 12:39PM EST (link)

You said so well what happened to me and others, and that is why we are here. As a person, who has always lived by principles and thought everyone else was doing the same, it was a shock to discover that is not quite true. The Left is desperate to get rid of religion in this country, it is the only way they can succeed in making the State–god. We cannot cede any more ground to them on our religious freedom.

Yes, you are right about Cold Warrior, and I do hope he stops by my diary today…The work of Erick, Moe and Neil and the other FP folks, and all of those who participate here, are the means of making change, and finding and restoring the foundation of our nation. It is so kind of you and others, to say I contribute here. I’m obviously not quite the blogger many political activists are, but because of RedState, I have found other ways to support and reinforce the Conservative movement.

I also thank you for condolences on TallChE; he was a great loss to our local community besides the wonderful personal friend he was to me and my family. I cried a lot of tears this past month.

On a happy note, TNJim, this tech challenged penguin is most happy for her accomplishment of mastering links and hyperlinks, due to your fine and patient tutoring. After all, you were teaching a soul who once thought HTML had something to do with email addresses!

Thank you for reminding me

proudmarinemom (Diary) Tuesday, December 8th at 7:45PM EST (link)

of the gratitude I feel for my own children — not my “own” in the biological sense, but my own nonetheless.

You are, indeed, a child of God, penguin.

I’m reminded of a beautiful poem, written anonymously by an adoptive mom (like me) whose prayers were answered when children became part of her family:

I
Did not plant you.
True.
But when
The season is done -
When the alternate
Prayers for sun
And for rain
Are counted -
When the pain
of weeding
And the pride
of watching
Are through -
Then
I will hold you
High,
A shining sheaf
Above the thousand
Seed grown wild.

Not my planting.
But by heaven
My harvest -
My own child.

May you always know that you are a beloved child of God.

That is absolutely beautiful, marinemom,

and how lucky your children were to have you. I have held to that belief of being a child of God my whole life, and truly I have that.

The way you tell your story is meaningful and I so appreciate getting to “know” you through your writings here. I had a bumpy childhood, too, and you are right on target that having had kids to raise really personalizes the cultural degradation we have been experiencing. My 2 daughters were in high school in the 1980s and the rot was already going full steam. Thankfully, it did not have any too damaging of an effect other than make them liberal. One is in the NEA and the other is of the same mindset. They both have great families, careers, and spiritual lives, so for that I give thanks.

It was truly an honor to meet you and your husband in Atlanta. Hope to see you again at the next gathering!

strangely, I actually see my resolve getting stronger, that is what they would expect all of us to do. To carry on for them and others.
It certainly is clear we have a fight on our hands.

It was great to meet you and the others at the gathering, I had not realized just how many people I have truly met here. Thank you.

Ahh, Penguin my friend...you are so full of awesome.

eburke (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 11:38AM EST (link)

What to say that hasn’t already been said – you are always so unfailingly kind (a trait that sometimes escapes those of us who are, well…how should I say this…”sarcastically pithy” :-) , your Christian love and faith always shining like a beacon in the darkness of the humanism that engulfs us; your gentle but resolute spirit.

Ya know, I find it so very ironic that my feminist acquaintances, so full of their desire to be ‘equal’, to be ‘like a man’ (why they would want devolve into such a state puzzles me), to be ‘strong’, to ‘have it all’ as they carry around a Gibralter-sized chip on their shoulder. While championing ‘choice’ for women, they arrogantly sneer at and look down their noses toward those women who have chosen a less ‘glamorous’ path.

And here’s the irony, it’s women like you, janis, Jaded, mom2oneson who, in my mind, are the truly ‘strong’ women, fighting for their children like a mother bear, sacrificing so many of the baubles that the world dangles in front of you as the ‘true’ signs of ‘success’, so that they can endeavor to make the world and our country a place where freedom and liberty reign so that all people can reach their God-given potential. It is women like you, penguin, who are the truly liberated ones, the ones on whom the lifeblood and backbone of our country rest. You are the living embodiment of the adage: “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.”

God bless you on your birthday, Penguin. Thanks for all that you do for your family, your country and for RS. You have been such a wonderful addition to the family. Thank you for your beautiful diary, for sharing your heart, and, well, just for being….you.

eburke, I really don't know where to begin....

Your beautiful words almost overcome a penguin like me. Thank you.

It is interesting the perception the feminists have towards women like myself. I think it has to do with one’s expectations. The truly free woman is one who can decide what it is they really want and be satisfied with the choice they made. Radical feminists seem to be angry that they cannot have it all, in the sense they don’t think they should have to make any sacrifices or modifications in their lives. And the underlying thought that runs through my mind on this, eburke- I never wanted to take on a man’s job or role. I have loved being exactly who I am, and as a woman it has been more than enough.

As I said your kind words touch my heart and really make my eyes glisten. I honestly had no idea that I made a difference here, considering that I truly am a little penguin and I am among giants on this site. OTOH, that is what makes RS so wonderful; we all get to have a part and we are important because we need to be here for each other.

One little fun thing to share with you: remember your yellow legal pad you talked about? Well that is exactly how I write my diaries, with paper and pen. :)

Of course, I went and hit the Rec button twice , inadvertently unreommending it. Trust me, it was cruelty to me, unable to finally recommend this great anthem of love, growth, struggle, and patriotism.

Penguiin, happy birthday and may you brighten the hallways of Redstate and that *other* place for many years to come.

EPU, at least this building has the kind of hallways...

penguin2 (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 5:01PM EST (link)

one wants to walk down. I honestly wonder how the two sides in Congress can pass each other in their hallways and not want to draw swords; figuratively speaking, of course. Though I suspect they are so into their senatorial exclusiveness, they wouldn’t dream of demanding pistols at dawn, or at least sending a shot across the bow in the press. Our side just doesn’t demand satisfaction. We are here to try and change that.

Thank you for your kind words; so many of you here I hold in high regard, and it humbles me to know that I can help make a difference.

You did a marvelous job describing your journey, and it was nice to meet you along the way at RS Atlanta.

LIke you, I’ve had a bit of an awakening this year (haven’t we all!)–from a solid conservative to an active one–thanks to RS and folks like you.
