The Truth On Gitmo

What the President’s Executive Order really means:

. . . Contrary to reports, Obama did not shut down Gitmo. Rather, he issued an order saying he will (or, to be precise, he intends to and is willing to commit in advance to) shut down Gitmo in a year’s time. This, to mix a metaphor, is kicking the can as far down the road as he possibly can without being penalized for delay of game. Or, to mix yet another metaphor, Obama is promising to write a popular book in a year’s time and is happy to pocket a sizable advance of good will and commentary now; book to be written later. Until then, however, other actions, like the shuttering of other detention centers, will have an immediate impact.

Read the whole thing for an interesting discussion on nomenclature as well. Interesting that so many people criticized George W. Bush for labeling the struggle against terrorism a “war,” but failed to pipe up when Barack Obama said the same thing in his Inaugural Address. Do they perhaps just think that he doesn’t mean it?

In pragmatic terms it means those that choose to fight the US military will be dealt with harshly in the field. Battlefield justice will ensure a quick end to many more terrorists that we won’t have to coddle.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

I wonder

I wonder if that is what it actually means. In any case, we have approximately 250 terrorists in Guantanamo alone that we will have to figure out what to do with. Recent headlines show that in many cases they return to the battlefield even after attempts at rehabilitation.

Let them return to the battlefield even after attempts at rehabilitation

They will be tracked and killed.

Not only Guantanamo

Can’t remember now where I read it, but I read somewhere that the order also includes other secret CIA prisons abroad. So who knows how many terrorists, including big fish being secretly held, we are actually talking about here. I have a bad feeling about this.

Actually, it would be better to send him to Gitmo.

I find it hard to believe that Obama would be so stupid...

to leave himself and the Democrats wide open to political oblivion by abandoning US defenses against another 9/11. One, just one of those, and the Dems are toast.

What I’m sure he doesn’t get or is unwilling to pursue is the notion of the best defense is a good offense. There’s no way to defend the vast openness of the US economy in a basketball half-court set on US soil. What Bush recognized is that we can be very effective, however, with a full court press.

Bush did an outstanding job of ensuring that terrorists had to focus on just protecting the ball against a turnover rather than hoping they miss their jump shots.

As I understand it,

they just can’t kick everyone out and slam the doors. The people who are imprisoned must be legally adjudicated one way or the other. Even if they are ultimately freed, they need someplace to go and where they were, or their country of origin, may not be willing to have them returned. The Bush administration created a real mess with this one, and it’s going to take time to straighten it out, so a year is not unreasonable. It’s not that the decisionwhether or not to close Gitmo has been postponed for a year, but that it will be done in an orderly manner.

to keep elements you don’t know what to do with.
You said
“Even if they are ultimately freed, they need someplace to go and where they were, or their country of origin, may not be willing to have them returned”.

This tells us you are as confused as BO. You set a timeline when you don’t know what to do. And you say “orderly manner” when you have no clue what that manner is?

Bill Laden must be feeling very relaxed. He knows his jihadi soldiers would be better off in US prisons than the Hindukush Mountains. Iced Tea, gentle questioning etc. That will be like nice vacation.

Do you know “fear” is the best deterrent?
